Revo? RevA? Which Is It?

Posted on Oct 12, 2009 | 12 Comments

There's been quite a bit of discussion here and on other sites about the network indicator not showing RevA, but only showing Rev0.  We just got word back from the product team - it's a visual display bug.

We recently discovered that Sprint's HTC Hero is showing a static message which reads CDMA - EVDO Rev.0 in its status settings whether or not the device is on Rev A speeds. In most cases, the device is performing on Rev A speeds even if the message reads Rev 0. This UI message error is not impacting the performance of the device in any way and will be corrected with the next maintenance release.

This jives with the speed test results posted in our forums - customers and employees are seeing full RevA speeds (1400kb/sec, sub 200ms ping times).

Sorry for the hassle - but we're on it and it'll be fixed soon.

Thanks for your interest!

Will

Have you heard anything about the mono issue when using 3.5mm headphones (Stereo only works with a 3.5mm microphone adapter)?

@wengla02 - Thanks for the update. I really do hope that this is true... A colleague and myself did feel the web browsing was a bit slower than usual (I don't do much web page browsing). I wasn't sure if this was widget/background process related or what.

What is a good speed test I can use to verify. Speedtest.net returned 0.61 Mb/s (624 kbps) for me.. I'll try again at home and try to turn off some features.

I just did a speed test using speedtest.net and the android speed test app.

On speedtest.net I got 1.66mbs down

On the speedtest app I got 1234.9 kbs

My experience with the Hero has been great so far! Now just waiting for the Donut update...

I've been wondering the same thing with regards to the mono (everything plaing in center) headphone output. I undersstand it might be an impedence issue... is there a patch/workaround?

I have tried several different speed test sites as well as the Android app and I am getting no better than 547.5 kbit/s download speeds.  I am not getting anywhere near EVDO rev. A advertised speeds.  I have confirmed I am in an EVDO rev. A area.  This is certainly not just an UI issue displaying EVDO rev. O in the status settings in error.  Sprint better fix this soon because I think it is a joke they advertise something some of the Heros are not capable of.

You can download a really small widget here:

http://toggleheadset.googlecode.com/files/ToggleHeadset.apk

Just type the entire address into your phone's browser.  (it is case-sensitive)

When you are hearing something in mono, simply tap the widget and you get stereo.  I think it remaps what audio is sent to the terminals in the phone'e headset jack, since the phone is probably expecting there to be a mic from a handsfree kit.

My Hero shows Rev 0 and is getting about 200 down and 60 up. This is Rev 0 speed, not Rev A. I believe this is a case where instead of it being just a display bug, I'm really not getting Rev A. Any help?

I did a speed test earlier this evening.  Reporting Rev 0 I got 1159 down.  (I don't remember what the up speed was)  But it was certainly Rev A speeds I was getting.

I'm getting about 700kbps both up and down and 300ms ping on several tests witht the wireless turned off.  I waited until I had lots of bars for reception.  Is the Rev. 0 or Rev. A?  My phone says Rev. 0 after the latest Sprint update.
