How Can I Maximize Battery Life On The SPH-M900 (Moment)?

Posted on Nov 1, 2009 | 20 Comments

I seem to burn through my Moment's battery pretty quickly and am going to try a couple of these tips from Samsung.

Because of the Android platform, the SPH-M900 (Moment) is a very data-centric device. As such, battery life can suffer with multiple applications and processes running silmultaneously. There are a few tips and tricks to maximize battery life:

  • Turn Wi-Fi off when out of range of any available Wi-Fi network
  • Turn Bluetooth off if not being used
  • Turn off data and voice call roaming
  • Keep ringer volume at a low to moderate level
  • Turn off Audible Touch Tones when using the Dialer's dial pad
  • Turn off Audible Selection (when making screen selections)
  • Turn off Window Animations
  • Keep screen brightness at low to moderate level
  • Set Screen Timeout setting to 30 seconds (lowest)
  • Turn off Auto-Sync for Google applications
  • Force Stop any applications that are not being used

Another battery saving tip:

  1. Press and hold the weather widget on the home screen drag to the trash can to throw it away
  2. You can then press and hold again on the home screen and select widgets.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and select the large weather widget
  4. Uncheck Follow current location.
  5. In the search bar at the top enter a zip code or city name and hit search icon to the right.
  6. Select OK

You may also want to set the location for the weather application.

To do this perform the following steps:

  1. Launch the application by pressing on the widget or the application from the program menu.
  2. With the application open press menu and add location.
  3. Click add a place.
  4. Enter a zip code or city name and hit search.
  5. Select your city and add the location.

Maybe 6, but that's with pretty heavy use - aka  lots of conference calls.

I dono, 6 hours is only 1/4 of a day, if a phone can not last 24hr on a single charge it doesn't do you any good buisness wise. That would be like saying, I can drive my car 300 miles per tank but I have to leave it parked 4 of the 7 days a week untouched.

Cell phones in general seem that the smarter they are the shorter lived they are, battery tech really needs a boost and bigger batteries need to be used.  I would gladly trade off making my Hero another 1/8-3/16" thicker if it ment the battery life would increase by 20% over stock. I am not a big talker but my phone is my primary source of music now and it runs either mp3's or Pandora from 8am till 6pm every day and my battery is usually in the 30's by midnight.

When I had the Hero, Auto-sync didn't seem to use all that much battery. I can't say for sure, but it seems to take remaining battery life into account when syncing. Google Latitude does the same thing, updates are dependant on speed and battery.

So, basically, you can't use any of the fun features of you want your battery to last a full day.  I find it rediculous that I have to charge my phone by 5 pm, on a day when I rarely talked and sent less than 5 texts.  What's the point in bragging about all these cool features, if you can't use the full functionality of them?  Not only is my battery life horrible, the moment keeps randomly turning on the airplane mode, thus blocking all of my communication capabilities.

It was suggested to me that you go to the 'market' and download "Advanced Task Killer Free".   You'll find that there are a lot of task killers, most costing something.  But this one is free and seems to work fine although I'm not sure it's had much effect on battery life yet.  It makes it really easy to turn off applications though.

If anyone knows of one of the other apps that works differently or better, even if it costs something, I'd love to hear about it!

download the full power managment app from the android market costs 99 cents it seems to help a bit I really think the battery needs to be conditioned charge, fully drain, charge, fully drain, etc.... when I first got my blackberry 2 years ago it did the samething for about a week until the battery was conditioned

I agree that the battery needs to be conditioned. My Touch Pro was the same way for a few weeks.

Make sure the battery is 100% charged before you use it...and you drain 100% the first few times.

My phone has GPS enabled and with moderate use it has been up since 10am yesterday. It's down to 15% battery, but with the battery meter issue, that doesn't mean much.

Again, that's 32 hours of uptime with moderate use that includes: GPS data fetching, nearly 100 texts sent/received now, a dozen pics taken and uploaded to facebook, 3 youtube vids 6+ mins long, four phone calls totalling an hour and a half, and several 'quick checks' to update/read twitter/facebook.

Got the same results on the first Moment, was exchanged today for a new unit.  This one also appeared to drain quickly, however since the battery indicator level drained to 15-5% (after less than two hours of use, disappointing) I have had another 2-3 hours of use out of it.  Will drain the battery tonight and give it a full charge, try the tips at the top of this screen (still want to be able to use the unit as others point too), and try the system update to see if Samsung has addressed a possible 'bad battery indicator' issue.

I appreciate seeing tips like this, but I really hope this is just a band-aid to get us by for a few weeks while an update (read: real solution) is crafted. If helpful tips for getting around a software issue are considered the solution, I'm probably going to return my phone and go back to my old flip phone.

the awake time is a good indicator and Handcent works well.  I don't know if this is an issue with the Moment but it's worth a look.

I'm hopefull that the 1.6 or 2.0 release will fix this too.

I didnt see it mentioned anywhere, so Im sorry if you already addressed this issue, but has the battery meter issue been escalated Sarah?

The meter itself will make the phone look like its only going to last a few short hours. Sometimes getting to 15% in 3-4 Hours. Obviously usage has some effect on how fast it gets there, but once it hits 15% it hovers there for as long, if not longer, than it took to get there in the first place.

Fully draining the battery, fully charging, turning off GPS unless I am using it has allowed me to get a full day of moderate use out of it.  I am also getting 2-4 hours of use in the evening at "15%" battery level.  This with heavier use TRYING to drain the battery completely.  If I used my former Blackberry all day long I had to charge that during the day.  All things appearing equal at this point - we have Smarter Phones, need Smarter Batteries and Smarter Battery Meters.
