Important Notes:
- Preferred method of update is OTW/tethered (Over the wire) due to the length of time required for installation
- OTA (Over the air) upgrade is only available when updating within the 5.0 release. Wifi should be connected
if upgrading via OTA
Update your software
OTA (over the air)
1. From the Main screen, press the Menu key
2. Select Options > Advanced Options > Wireless Update > Check for Updates
3. Select the newest upgrade version and click Next
4. Click Start Download > Upgrade Now
* Note: To schedule a time to install the BlackBerry Device Software, click Schedule Upgrade
5. Click Upgrade Now again
6. When the update is done, your phone will reboot and refresh with the latest update
OTW (over the wire; through your computer)
1. Go to the Sprint Download site to get the download file
2. Find the software version you need and click More Details
3. Scroll to the bottom and select Download
4. A pop-up box will ask you to either Run or Save the download; choose Save and save to
your computer desktop
5. Once the download is saved, double-click the file that was saved to your desktop and
when the dialog box appears, click Run
6. Select the appropriate language and click OK
7. Click Next and select the appropriate Country or Region
8. Click Next and select I accept the terms in the license agreement
9. Click Next and the installation process will begin
10. Click Finish
11. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager by going to
Start > Programs > BlackBerry > Desktop Manager
12. Once the Desktop Manager is open, connect your phone to your computer using the USB
cable and make sure the Desktop Manager shows Connected in the top left
13. If the Application Updates Available window appears, click Update Now and select the
check box for BlackBerry Device Software 5.0
14. Click Next
15. On the Device Backup screen, choose whether to automatically back up the data on your
phone or to Not back up the data
* Note: It is recommended that you back up your data before proceeding
16. Click Next
17. Click Finish to begin loading the BlackBerry Desktop Software to your phone
* Important Note: Do not unplug the phone while the update is loading
18. Click Close when the software is finished loading
Via the Blackberry Web Site (Applies to Non-BES Customers Only; for BIS Customers Only)
1. Connect the phone to the computer using a USB connection
2. On the computer, navigate to the BlackBerry Device Software Updates Web site
3. Click Check for Updates
4. In the Device connection dialog box, type the password for your phone
5. Click OK
6. Complete the instructions on the screen to perform the update
Check the version on your phone
1. From the Main menu, scroll to and select the Options (wrench) icon
2. Select About
3. The software version will be listed in the format of X.X.X.XXX
