USPS Check Preso 5.12 small.jpeg

Last week, we celebrated one of our Buyback Program’s higher-profile participants: the United States Postal Service (USPS). Since late 2011, USPS has turned in more than 6,000 old cell phones—earning a payout of $250,000 (and counting). USPS Vice President of Information Technology John Edgar and Chief Sustainability Officer Tom Day accepted the check from Sprint at USPS Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

"It’s an honor to present this check to USPS; even better, though, is knowing that together we’ve prevented thousands of phones from entering landfills,” said Gary Moore, Manager of Recycling for Sprint Product Reverse Logistics. “We’re looking forward to continuing and expanding our partnership with USPS, which we estimate will save the agency several hundred thousand dollars over the next two years.”

The milestone was part of Sprint’s larger carrier partnership with USPS; it’s also a terrific example of our Buyback Program’s widespread success in rewarding customers for recycling old phones. Last month, the total buyback value for Sprint customers who’ve handed in their old phones exceeded $100 million. It’s a win-win on all fronts: Customers get a financial incentive, and we’ve diverted more than 28 million wireless devices from landfills since 2001.

We look for partners who share and support a culture of conservation,” said Tom Day of USPS. “Our involvement with Sprint’s environmentally friendly Buyback Program proves that when sustainability is integrated into our business, it becomes part of our brand, and a key factor in our success.”

The Buyback Program works by allowing customers to give us their old cell phones—even devices from other carriers or manufacturers—in exchange for a credit that can be used toward the purchase of new phones or accessories. All devices we collect are fixed and sold for reuse, or recycled through certified programs that ensure the most responsible methods of disposing of electronic waste.

At Sprint, we strive to provide the highest quality wireless service for our customers, including those with disabilities. Sprint’s Captioned Telephone service (CapTel) allows those who have a hearing loss to connect with loved ones via phone when they otherwise might not be able to.

This service was featured recently on a segment of “Baby Boomers in America” hosted by Morgan Fairchild on Lifetime TV.

How does Sprint CapTel work?

If you struggle to hear on the phone and/or prefer to watch television with the closed captions on, then Sprint CapTel will help you use the telephone with confidence. If you have difficulty hearing, you can be sure of what your callers say – on every call – with Sprint’s Captioned Telephone Service. Captions appear virtually at the same time as your caller speaks, allowing you to enjoy the natural flow of a telephone conversation.

Wireless CapTel

Wireless CapTel by Sprint, powered by Raketu, is a free app available for individuals with hearing loss to place calls on select Android-powered devices running 2.2 OS or higher. Using state of the art voice recognition technology, the app delivers captions of everything your caller says, while you listen (with your residual hearing) and speak directly to your caller.

When you are in the driver’s seat, please utilize the tools available to drive without distraction.

When we shared about this before, we urged you to take the pledge to drive without distractions from texting and emailing. Now we want to tell you about a few helpful mobile tools to use during your commute. They also can be valuable when coaching your teens to avoid distractions when they begin driving on their own.

Sprint Drive First

Sprint is committed to both innovative technology and helping its customers avoid distractions and focus on driving. We are offering Sprint Drive First, a mobile application powered by Location Labs. The app can automatically detect movement over 10 MPH and lock a wireless device so drivers are not distracted by mobile phones while driving.

The lock screen features options to “exit” the lock mode (if the device user is in the passenger or back seat, for example, rather than driving) and an emergency “911” button should the driver need to call for help quickly. Calls are sent to voicemail, notifications are silenced and incoming text messages receive an automatic response that the driver is in transit. Parents of teen drivers using the application can receive notifications when the application is turned off or unlocked.

Other Resources

Before commuting, Sprint customers can access a set of resources, including insurance facts and statistics, vehicle and booster seat safety ratings.

Sprint also works with companies that use device-to-device communications to reduce distracted driving.

DriveCam offers a driving safety program based on a video event recorder wirelessly enabled by Sprint. When g-forces indicate distracted driving, it sends a video to DriveCam for evaluation by professional safety analysts. The tool is also used by fleet managers and parents of teens to use in coaching their drivers. In fact, American Family Insurance makes DriveCam available through its Teen Safe Driver ProgramSM at no charge to its customers.

More information on Sprint’s distracted driving efforts can be found at sprint.com/focusondriving. While you’re there, check out our database of useful distracted driving mobile applications.

Sprint is featuring five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion driver Jimmie Johnson in a new NASCAR-themed TV commercial that begins airing Saturday night (April 28) on Fox during the Capital City 400 presented by Virginia is for Lovers race at Richmond International Raceway.

In this humorous spot Johnson talks about a scenario where a race fan missed Johnson’s winning moment because of their limited data plan. He talks about how he drove to victory by making a gutsy move vs. another driver just before the end of the race. “I drove it in deep … but you missed it,” he says, as a highlight appears showing him taking the lead in a race. He then mentions that you missed his victory because “you got throttled by your data plan and it slowed you down. You hit your data limit streaming all that techno music, didn’t you?” Immediately, techno music begins playing and bright laser light-like images appear all around him. He concludes with, “Man, you’ve got some questionable taste in music.”

Watch it now!

This is the fourth TV spot from Sprint highlighting Sprint’s truly Unlimited Data plans through the theme “Avoid a Data Dilemma.” The first was an NBA-themed ad featuring Oklahoma City Thunder star forward Kevin Durant. The other two are general-consumer spots, one titled “Boss” and the other “Little Girl.”

Johnson will also be featured in digital advertising that will appear on NASCAR.com and he will be featured prominently on sprint.com/speed. Johnson is the only NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion to win five consecutive titles and this week was named by Forbes as America’s most influential athlete, based on public opinion polling.

Sprint has been the title sponsor of NASCAR’s premier series, the Sprint Cup Series, since 2004. NASCAR and Sprint signed a multi-year agreement for Sprint to remain the entitlement partner of the sport’s premier series through 2016.

When you are behind the wheel, please keep your eyes on the road and not on a text message.

Sprint is committed to raising awareness about distracted driving. We encourage no texting while driving because we care about our customers. The potential consequences of texting while driving can be devastating.

Take the Pledge

So what are we doing to support distracted driving awareness? For starters, we are asking our customers to take the pledge to put safety first and focus on driving. At Sprint, we have encouraged all of our employees to pledge: “I will set a good example and engage in safe driving practices in my personal life by avoiding risky behaviors like texting or emailing while I am operating a motor vehicle. When I’m behind the wheel, I will keep my focus on driving.”

You can make a big difference simply by taking the pledge to stop texting or e-mailing—reading and sending—while driving and encouraging others to take the pledge as well.

Once you’ve taken the pledge, read more about our commitment to focusing on driving here: Focus on Driving

It is disconcerting to think about losing your smartphone.

From email to apps and other services so many of us use on our phones these days, our devices can be packed with sensitive information from our work and personal lives.

We hope you never lose track of your phone. But, as we all know, accidents or bad things can happen.  In case it ever happens to you, we would urge all wireless consumers to take precautions.

First, we all should remain aware of our surroundings while using a smartphone in public. This can help significantly reduce your chances of becoming a theft victim.

Before a phone is lost or stolen

Protect the information on your phone by using passcodes and security applications.

Passcodes – Sprint customers should always use passcodes to lock their phones and make it more difficult for someone else to access information on your phone if it is lost or stolen.

To find out how to set a passcode, review your device User Guide at www.sprint.com/support.  This will provide instructions for devices capable of using a passcode.

Protection Applications - You can download apps that provide additional protection and services that might be helpful I f you ever lose track of your phone, such as:

Total Equipment Protection (TEP) allows customers to download a protection application to locate a lost/stolen device, as well as remotely lock the device, erase contacts, etc.  For more information visit www.sprint.com/protection. Additional monthly charges apply for TEP.

Lookout Mobile Security offers a free trial or option for customers that blocks viruses, malware and spyware. In addition to backing up and restoring contacts, the application can locate a lost or stolen phone on a map and emit a loud alert to locate the device’s exact location. For more information, visit:  https://www.mylookout.com/

McAfee Mobile Security offers protection against mobile device data loss and threats that target smartphones, tablets and other devices.

Additional products are available in the Android, Blackberry and Apple marketplaces.

Voice mail security – use a passcode.  – A passcode offers the best protection when it comes to protecting your voice mail account from unauthorized access.  At Sprint, when you set up your voice mail account, you are required to establish a passcode. If you choose to skip the passcode, your voice mail account will be vulnerable to unauthorized access.

If your phone is lost or stolen

If your device is lost or stolen, contact us immediately at 1-888-211-4727 to suspend your service.

When you suspend your service, you won't be able to make or receive calls, send or receive messages or use domestic data.

•          You will keep your phone number while your service is suspended.

•          You are responsible for any monthly rate charges associated with the service on your device.

•          If you have Total Equipment Protection or if you are part of the Equipment Replacement Program, visit www.sprint.com/protection to file a claim, or locate your device if you have the protection application.

Frequently asked Questions

Can I locate my device with Family Locator?

Yes, if you have Sprint Family Locator activated on your account. To find a lost or stolen phone, the phone must be turned on and in Sprint network coverage. The location will be approximate and will not be accurate enough to find a lost phone in a specific room in a house.

Can I buy a phone off eBay, Craigslist or elsewhere and activate it on my account?

You should obtain the serial number of the device and then check with Sprint to make sure no bill is owed on that device and that it hasn't been reported as lost or stolen.  Devices that have been reported lost or stolen to Sprint cannot be re-activated on our network.

Eligible organizations must be located in the Atlanta area (Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale counties), Denver area (Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties), Dallas/Ft Work area (Collin, Dallas, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall,Tarrant and Wise counties) and New York City area (Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester counties in New York, and Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex and Union counties in New Jersey). Nominations for the Sprint Local Giving Program will be accepted between 9 a.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, May 1, and 6 p.m. Eastern time on Friday, June 15, at www.sprint.com/localgiving.

Sprint will then review all applications and notify the three finalist organizations, each of which will receive one of the three available grants in their community – $25,000, $15,000 or $10,000. Sprint will also provide the three finalists with video-capable Sprint mobile phones for a three-week period. The three finalists will use these devices to create short videos highlighting the programs for which they are requesting funding. These videos will be judged by Sprint to determine which level of funding will be awarded to each organization. (Additional details about the video will be provided to the finalist organizations at the appropriate time; organizations applying for a Sprint Local Giving Program grant should not submit video applications until they’ve received instructions from Sprint.)

By the end of September, Sprint will notify the finalist organizations which level of funding they have received. A local reception will be held near the end of the year, during which Sprint will present the award checks.
