Sprint, with the help of our customers, is making progress in phone recycling, offering more sustainable products and taking other steps to reduce the impact on the environment. As we head into 2012, Sprint will be focused on an aggressive set of commitments to help us continue those positive efforts with new sustainable design and packaging requirements.

Sprint has just announced an enhanced environmental scorecard that will be used with phone manufacturers and vendors. Starting Jan. 1, Sprint’s updated environmental scorecard requires the following:
o All phones must go through the UL Environment certification process – an industry first.
o Improved specifications around reparability of phones.
o Stronger specifications for sustainable packaging.

Running our company in a more sustainable manner is good for the environment. And it’s also good for business. We expect that these changes not only will reduce Sprint’s overall impact on the environment, but they also will save money.

If you are interested in learning more about these efforts, we’ll share additional details below.

While we are taking the lead in working with our manufacturing partners and others to devise Greener approaches, our customers also can work with us to make important strides.

Sprint’s Sustainability Program

The announcement of these standards aligns with Sprint’s larger sustainability efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, use renewable energy, create less waste, and sell greener mobile devices.

Sprint Buyback offers customers an instant credit of up to $275 to return their old or unused mobile devices so that Sprint can responsibly reuse or recycle them. The program was recently named the best buyback program in the industry by Compass Intelligence.

Sprint’s industry-leading role in corporate responsibility and environmental sustainability continues to receive recognition. For the third year in a row, Sprint ranked highest among all U.S. telecom companies on Newsweek’s 2011 Rankings of America’s Greenest Companies at No. 3, up from No. 6 in 2010. Sprint was also ranked highest among the wireless carrier industry on this year’s Dow Jones Sustainability Index North America.
