Bob Azzi, senior vice president – Network, Sprint

“Within the first half of 2012, Sprint customers should experience first-hand the wide-reaching improvements we have made in terms of boosting voice and data quality. With advanced smartphones and sophisticated wireless modems, our customers are using more and more mobile data, and one of our top priorities is to provide the best technology possible to improve our customers’ experience.”

Our customers in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio are expected to be among the first to benefit from 4G LTE and improved 3G coverage in the first half of 2012.

Dan Hesse, Sprint CEO, made this announcement at the annual Citigroup Entertainment, Media and Telecommunications Conference.

We have been sharing information in recent months about our overall network strategy known as Network Vision. The launch of these metropolitan areas marks the next step in this strategy.

Sprint customers can expect to enjoy ultra-fast data speeds, improved 3G voice and data quality, and stronger in-building signal penetration providing a more reliable wireless experience. Whether a Sprint customer is on a smartphone streaming video, browsing the Web with a mobile hotspot, or making a voice call to someone across the country, everyone in the upgraded areas is expected to benefit from the advanced 3G/4G LTE network.

We promise to share more information about these plans as we move forward. Please check back here on Sprint.com Community, follow @Sprint on Twitter or visit our Facebook page so you can receive those updates.

Here are answers to at least some initial questions that some of our customers might have:

LTE Phones and data cards

We plan to launch CDMA/LTE devices midyear, with up to 15 devices expected in 2012, including handsets, tablets and data cards.

WiMAX devices

Many Sprint customers already have been enjoying 4G with phones such as Samsung Epic 4G Touch and HTC EVO 3D, which operate on our WiMAX network.

Sprint remains committed to our WiMAX customers and plans to sell WiMAX devices with two-year contracts through 2012. Dual-mode WiMAX devices that also operate on the CDMA network are expected to get the benefits of Network Vision associated with Sprint’s 3G service, but they will not operate on Sprint’s LTE network.

Well over a year after making its debut, the award-winning HTC EVO™ 4G continues to stay at the top of the charts! Earlier this week, research firm NPD Group announced its new Mobile Phone Track report for the second quarter of 2011 ranking HTC EVO 4G as the number one best-selling Android device and number three best-selling U.S. smartphone respectively. According to NPD Group’s report, Android devices continue to lead the U.S. smartphone market with 52% of new sales during the quarter.

Sprint made history in June of 2010 with the launch of the award-winning HTC EVO 4G, America’s first 3G/4G wireless phone. Packed with industry-leading features, it set first-day and first-weekend sales records for Sprint and was lavished with praise and awards by respected technology and telecommunications media and analysts. Over the past year HTC EVO 4G has been awarded such honors as the prestigious POPULAR MECHANICS Breakthrough Award, CTIA 2010 Best of Show from CNET, LAPTOP Magazine and eWeek and #1 Android phone of 2010 from TheStreet.com.

Just as they did from day one, Sprint customers continue to love HTC EVO 4G's long list of features including the 4.3-inch screen, dual 8MP video camera capable of capturing HD quality and front-facing 1.3MP camera. They also appreciate the HDMI output jack making it simple to start a movie for their children in the backseat of the car with the phone and then connect to an HDTV to finish it when they arrive at home.

America’s Favorite 4G Network

As the first national wireless carrier to test, launch and market 4G technology, Sprint made history by launching 4G in Baltimore in September 2008. Sprint currently offers 4G service in 71 markets in 28 states. For more information, visit www.sprint.com/4G.

HTC EVO 4G is currently available for $99.99 on sprint.com with a new line or eligible upgrade or two-year service agreement, (taxes excluded).

Beginning this week, Sprint Nexus S™ 4G1 from Google™ users can get first access to the latest version of Swype, as well as a custom build of the popular touch screen keyboard for free.

Swype provides a faster and easier way to enter text on any screen when used with the device’s virtual keyboard. One continuous finger or stylus motion across the screen keyboard is all it takes to enter words using Swype. The patented technology enables users to enter words faster and easier than other data input methods, at up to 40 words per minute.

Swype is faster than other text entry methods, because it has built-in intelligence that doesn’t require users to hit each letter accurately. Also, tracing a smooth, continuous path is much faster than the hunt-and-peck method. It is simple to learn and Swype allows for a high degree of error tolerance providing a more intuitive way to input text on touch screens.

Nexus S™ 4G is getting a software update designed to improve 4G data speeds for users and provide several other updates. The release will begin rolling out to Nexus S 4G handsets on Monday, July 25. All users should receive the update in the next three weeks.

In Sprint's preproduction testing, Nexus S 4G showed excellent performance. After receiving feedback from a small number of our customers, we conducted a secondary analysis of its performance with our partners at Google and Samsung and were able to identify some ways we could boost performance on Nexus S 4G.

These enhancements should increase 4G data speeds and signal strength for users. The software update also improves Wi-Fi connectivity, speakerphone audio quality and adds TTY support for the deaf and hard of hearing.

"Nexus S 4G continues to be a highly sought after smartphone and performs very well for our customers. We are excited to make additional enhancements that will provide an even better user experience" said Fared Adib, vice president – Product Development, Sprint. "We're committed to listening to our customers' feedback and working with our partners to provide the best possible customer experience."

Manufactured by Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), a leading global mobile phone provider and the No. 1 mobile phone provider in the United States, Nexus S 4G is the only Nexus S phone with 4G and provides a pure Google experience with Android™ 2.3, Gingerbread, the fastest version of Android available for smartphones.

Additional key features include:

  • 1GHz Samsung application processor that produces rich 3D-like graphics, faster upload and download times and supports HD-like multimedia content
  • Dedicated Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to make playing mobile games, browsing the Web and watching videos a fast, fluid and smooth experience
  • AMOLED™ touchscreen technology on a 4-inch Contour Display
  • 5 megapixel rear-facing camera and camcorder and front-facing VGA camera.
  • Gyroscope sensor to provide a smooth gaming experience when the user tilts the device up or down or pans the phone to the left or right
  • 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot capability, supporting up to six Wi-Fi enabled devices simultaneously
  • Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which allows the device to read information from everyday objects, like stickers and posters embedded with NFC chips
