Ice Cream Sandwich will be available via an over-the-air update to a variety of devices including Galaxy™ S II, Epic™ 4G Touch and Nexus S™ and other key products in our line-up. LG Optimus S™ from Sprint will receive an Android 2.3, Gingerbread, software upgrade through an over-the-air maintenance release rolling out now. The release offers an update to Android 2.3, Gingerbread for LG Optimus S to both users that currently have updated to Android 2.3 as well as those that do not currently have the software on their device.

 

The new software upgrade will offer an even better user experience on LG Optimus S. Benefits includes:

 

  • New on-screen keyboard. The standard keyboard has been greatly improved with faster input and more intuitive typing. The cut-and-paste feature has also been improved.
  • Streamlined user interface. New color schemes and various UI changes make Android more consistent and simpler to use.
  • Application and power management. Android 2.3 provides better insight into what is running in the background and the amount of memory and CPU time it is using. A task killer has been added.
  • Download management. All downloads from the browser, email and other apps can now be viewed and controlled from a single location.
  • General enhancements for performance improvements. 

 

Beginning today, Sprint will send update notifications to users in waves.  The notification will let users know the update is available and provide the simple two-step, over-the-air download instructions.

 

  1. Users will receive a notification that Android 2.3 is available for download.
  2. Once the user has downloaded the update, they will be prompted to install the update. The user will be notified that their device will be disabled during the installation process. The phone will be ready to use once the process completes.

The Game Developers Conference is under way this week, so it seems like the perfect time to highlight some of the great features Sprint offers for gaming on your phone, from new Sprint ID packs to 3D gaming.

 

Sprint ID Packs

Just announced Tuesday at the conference is the new WildTangent ID Pack for Sprint ID-capable phones. The WildTangent ID pack allows Sprint ID users to discover and play popular games such as Age of Zombies, Bonsai Blast, Deer Hunter, Nintaii and Pocket Ants. The service adds new games daily and gives users the opportunity to try games for free or rent games for a fraction of the purchase price. The WildTangent Sprint ID pack can be found here.

 

Other gaming ID packs include two from Gameloft:

  • HD Games ID Pack - features access to high-definition games including Dungeon Hunter2 HD+, Assassin’s Creed HD+, Let’s Golf 3 and Order and Chaos Paymium HD+ for devices such as Samsung Epic™ 4G, Samsung Epic™ 4G Touch, Samsung Galaxy Tab™ and Motorola Photon™ 4G.
  • Top Games ID Pack – features access to a collection of games including Iron Man 2, Gangstar 2, N.O.V.A. and NFL 2011 for devices such as Sanyo Zio™, Samsung Transform™ and LG Optimus S™.

 

Sprint ID is a service that helps subscribers personalize their Sprint ID-capable Android devices by downloading specific mobile content that fits their lifestyle. Launched in October 2010, Sprint ID  is now available on 12 devices, with  45 downloadable ID packs, including Disney Channel, ESPN, E!, MTV and NASCAR. ID packs are free to download with an Everything Data plan from Sprint. Sprint customers can download up to five ID packs at a time and easily swap them out for new ones or switch between them.

 

3D Gaming

Last summer Sprint launched the first 3D phone in the United States, HTC EVO 3D, offering users the ultimate glasses-free 3D experience. A free Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem 3D demo version of the game is preloaded on HTC EVO 3D, along with the Gameloft Storefront, giving customers access to a variety of 2D and 3D games, including Need for Speed: Shift, Sims 3, Monopoly and Asphalt 6.

Built with Android 3.2, Honeycomb, the version of Android designed specifically for tablets, ZTE Optik is a powerful e-reader, media player and portable computing device. HTC EVO View 4G™ will be upgraded to Android™ 3.2, Honeycomb, with a maintenance release that is available for download today; Honeycomb is the version of Android designed specifically for tablets.

To get Android 3.2, there is an easy user initiated process to download the upgrade:

  1. From the Home screen, press the Menu key and tap Settings
  2. Scroll down and tap System updates
  3. Tap HTC software update
  4. Tap Check now
  5. Tap OK to download and install the update. You will not be able to use your device during the update. Once the download is complete, your tablet may power off and back on to complete the software update. The status of the download can be checked in your task bar.
  6. Verify the software is updated by going to Menu>Settings>About Tablet>Software information.

The upgrade will also be available in 2012 through an over-the-air update from Sprint. The notification will let users know the update is available and provide the simple over-the-air download instructions.

Due to the unique structure of the Honeycomb layout, customers’ personalized widgets and screen setup will not remain after the upgrade. The device will revert to the out of the box home screen layout. Wallpapers, Widgets, Application shortcuts personalized by the user have been resized for optimal viewing and will need to be re-established.

Additionally, some third-party apps may not work with Honeycomb, a tablet specific operating system. We recommend users remove the application, and check Android Market™ to see if an updated application is available, or contact the application provider.

HTC EVO View 4G brings the best of the EVO experience to a tablet design with a 7-inch touchscreen, 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and latest version of HTC Sense for Tablets. Today, Sprint announced new Sprint Mobile Controls powered by Safely, a division of Location Labs, that will allow parents to set phone use limits by time of day or week and see daily calls, text messaging and application activity.

Samsung Epic™ 4G will receive the Android™ 2.3, Gingerbread, update through an over-the-air maintenance release starting today.

 

When your Samsung Epic 4G is eligible for the Gingerbread maintenance release, the update will automatically download. Once the download is complete, you will be prompted to install the update. Installation will take a few minutes, and your device will be disabled during the installation process. The phone will be ready to use when the process is complete.

 

The software upgrades Samsung Epic 4G to Android 2.3, Gingerbread. This version of the Android software improves download management through the Downloads application offering easy access to any file downloaded from the browser, email or another application. Beginning today, Sprint will send update notifications to users in waves.  The notification will let users know the update is available and provide the simple two-step, over-the-air download instructions.

 

  1. Users will receive a notification that Android 2.3 is available for download.
  2. Once the user has downloaded the update, they will be prompted to install the update. The user will be notified that their device will be disabled during the installation process. The phone will be ready to use once the process completes.

 

This update includes:

  • New on-screen keyboard. The standard keyboard has been greatly improved with faster input and more intuitive typing. The cut-and-paste feature has also been improved.
  • Streamlined user interface. New color schemes and various UI changes make Android more consistent and simpler to use.
  • Application and power management. Android 2.3 provides better insight into what is running in the background and the amount of memory and CPU time it is using. A task killer has been added.
  • Download management. All downloads from the browser, email and other apps can now be viewed and controlled from a single location.
  • General enhancements for performance improvements. 

 

The software release upgrades LG Optimus S to Android 2.3, Gingerbread. This version of Android improves download management through the Downloads application, offering the user easy access to any file downloaded from the browser, email or another application.
