Sprint brings bold innovation to wireless industry

Posted on Sep 10, 2009 | 53 Comments

Break Free of Calling Circles with Any Mobile, AnytimeSM and make unlimited calls on Sprint network to 250 million wireless phone numbers, regardless of carrier.

Dan Hesse, CEO, Sprint
“Simply Everything and Ready Now were Sprint innovations to make wireless simpler and more worry-free for our customers. We don’t think our customers want to have to keep track of or only talk to friends, colleagues or family members who make the same choices they do.  Any Mobile, Anytime provides unprecedented simplicity and value, so much that many more customers can now consider cutting the cord altogether.”

News highlights:

  • Sprint is introducing an innovative approach to calling plans called Any Mobile, Anytime.
  • Unlimited calls to and from any wireless phone on any network are now included in Sprint Everything Data plans at no additional charge.
  • Any Mobile, Anytime makes it easy for individuals and families to cut the home telephone cord and save money.
  • Starting at $69.99, Everything Data plans include unlimited text, picture and video messaging and unlimited data services such as email, Web browsing, social networking, GPS navigation, Sprint TV, streaming music, exclusive NFL Mobile Live and NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile applications and more.
  • Any Mobile, Anytime will be added automatically for free for customers already on an Everything plan. No need to do anything! Learn more

Reaction:

Roger Entner, senior vice president, Research and Insights, Nielsen Telecom Practice.
“The new Any Mobile, Anytime feature should be attractive to the middle market of customers, especially families with multiple lines.  These are people who are likely to be cutting the cord and regularly calling other cord cutters. This is much bigger than a calling circle.  Sprint is removing barriers so that customers don’t have to worry about which wireless network the people they’re calling might use -- and they don’t have to worry about any data constraints either.”

It’s a wireless world:

Research from Yankee Group found that consumers increasingly are clipping their home telephone cords as they trim household expenses. The July 2009 “Consumers Cut Back on Network Spending” report provides these details about the growing trend:

  • Nearly a third already claim their mobiles are their primary home phones
  • Twenty-nine percent of respondents have already cut their land line cords in favor of their always-with-them mobile phones.
  • Another 7% will give up their landlines in the next year.

I recently switched to Sprint over AT&T to get the Palm Pre mainly because of the unlimited plans.  My wife and I share 1500 minutes and we were already spending at least $40 less per month than if we had iPhones on AT&T.

Now Sprint is adding unlimited to any mobile in the country and I have no idea why I need to keep paying for my home phone anymore; Sprint you have definitly turned me into an advocate for you!  There is no reason why we should be getting charged so much on other carriers for high end plans and while Sprint is giving us more and more for a good price.

Now if only insurance companies whould try this.....

ThisIS fantastic.  The best part is that current customers will automatically get this added to their plan without extension of contract or anything, we don't even have to call in to get it added.  Past practices would have made it only available for new customers or with renewal of plan.....thanks for doing away with those sneaky ways!  Sprint plans were already the best in the nation with the best coverage and speeds, now there is no competition.  We ditched the home phone years ago (we have direct line of sight to a tower at our house) and now there is no hesitation.   I have toyed with the idea of leaving Sprint for other networks and am appalled at their prices.  Good work Sprint!

Now we need a family everything plan with about 1/2 the minutes.....or even 1/4.

Can't wait to flex this with my Hero in a couple weeks.

Thanks Sprint

You Just Saved me a lot of arguements and headaches!!!

My wife loves to chatter with her friend on her cell phone sometimes all day long, and if something exciting happens ( drama ), well, she just has to call everyone and tell them the news.

Well, just a week ago I got my bill for over 300$ which is about 100$ more than I normally pay each month.

So I call you guys, and low and behold, my 1500 minutes just turned into 1700+ minutes. But between my teenage son and I, we only combined for 50 minutes.

Not only was the lady I spoke with sympathetic with my Shock, but she was glad to remove the overages and today you do this....Awesome!

Not only did you help an old man's stress level drop, but you just put a BIG OL SMILE on my wife's face ( all her friends have cellphones )....Thanks Guys! Just another reason your number 1 to a lot of us.

THANKS SPRINT!!!!!!!!!! This makes ya'll even more awesome but I would be fine with or without it. I'm one of those people who texts more than I talk. Outta 450 minutes I don't even think I reach 200.

Ya'll have some of the best phones and so many Sprint only phones and phone maunufactures like Sanyo that are only on Sprint.

Now if only ya'll could put some towers up in Scottsville so when I'm at camp my phone can make a call and not drop the signal.

I can't wait for the Instinct HD....When is it coming?

Well, mine (#2) wasn't staged by the marketing team, so I blew your theory there.  It is okay for Sprint customers to be happy that their wireless company, in which they have invested a lot of money over the years, is responding to make themselves better than the competition by a long shot.  Sometimes people post positive things on forums, hard for you to believe I can see.

I agree, i'm dissapointed that this plan didn't lower the entry price for a data plan, i think that would have really been a "game changer" with the new phones coming out.  We get by fine now with our Fair & Flex 550 plan and would love to see a data plan in a comparable price range instead of double our current monthly bill.

So is this only for Sprint CDMA phones or does it include Nextel iDEN phones as well?  Reason I ask is because I have five lines on an everything data family (4 iDEN & 1 CDMA) and the only one that shows " any mobile, any where" in the useage screen is the CDMA phone.  Kind of sticking it to the iDEN customers (again) if this is the case.

sweet - I wonder why it doesn't show up on my usage details.

I suppose it's not fair to say that Sprint sticks it to the Nextel folks.  I am very satisfied with my Nextel service, and the service of the Sprint phone I have as well.  Just seems a little odd to have to pay for 3G data on the Everything Data share plan when clearly an iDEN phone will not come even close to 3G performance on a good day sitting next to the tower, and then have to turn around and pay $5 for the PTT to work as well.  Seems like there should be a trade off - we'll throw in the PTT on the iDEN phones because you don't get 3G data.  The PTT is included in the individual ED plan, but not the share plan - strange.  Oh well, it's working good for them I suppose, gets an extra $20/month out of me.

I've seen a lot of comments on quite a few different cellular user sites (blogs, forums, etc.) on this new feature of Sprint's Everything plans, and about 99% are positive, which is no surprise.

What HAS surprised me is the depth this has penetrated into the non-Sprint users awareness already, and the significant number of them that are saying they are now considering a move to Sprint.

Personally, I strongly hope this is true, and that Sprint will see a healthy influx of new cusomers brought in from other carriers.

This is revitalizing the Sprint brand, and getting a lot of folks not only aware of the feature, but seriously considering a move.

Keep this up, Sprint, and my carrier of choice will once again be healthy and growing.

Go Sprint!

Those voice minutes are those you would use to talk with landline phones rather than mobile to mobile. M2M is unlimited and free, landline calls are limited to the number of minutes you pay for on the plan.

While almost everyone is talking all about this new feature being so great and many of my friends are moving to Sprint for this (negating the need for this plan for myself now that they all are coming to Sprint)...

I want to play Devil's Advocate for a minute and bring up some rather interesting points that MUST be addressed by Sprint before I can rejoice and praise Sprint.

The mobile numbers that are included are determined in Sprint and 3rd-Party data bases. - my concerns are below

1. How can Sprint determine the number is now a mobile number from a recently ported land line?

2. What happens if a call is rated "ANYTIME" but is in fact an "ANY MOBILE" call?

3. Is Customer Service going to be given authorization to ensure proper credits, and correct mobile numbers are being entered into accounts where errors have been made?

4. How much testing has Sprint done to ensure as minimal problems occur with this plan, in comparison to other problems with other plans (ie, Free & Clear America Roaming being charged roaming)?

These are major factors for me and my friends who like Sprint, but dont trust them in the slightest. After years of shady business practices (particularly my taxes fluctuating monthly, when my actual rate plan stays the same), and secret contract extentions when credits are given, has made us all a little weary of this.

Since this is a change in contractual plans...Technically I did NOT sign up for this feature... Will I be given the option to cancel my plan without incurring and ETF?

Just a few concerns that Sprint needs to address to people.

Also... LASTLY...

Sprint REALLY needs to tell people that this Any Mobile, Anytime change DOES NOT go in effect till the NEXT BILL CYCLE. I see notices in my account saying that I can already make these calls, but I talked to eCare, and they assured me, it will be added automatically, on my next bill cycle... So the "alerts" in my account saying I have this feature already, are actually quite false.

PLEASE SPRINT ALERT CUSTOMERS OF THIS, OR YOU WILL ALIENATE US MORE AND CREATE CHURN.

RobinM -

The features that are "UNLIMITED" in the "Everything Data" pack are as follows :

Data

Picture/Video/Text/MultiMedia Messages

Sprint Radio Premier

Sprint TV

Sprint Navigation

BlackBerry Internet Service (if you have compatible phone)

Direct Connect (if you have compatible phone)

Sprint/Boost/Nextel Mobile to Mobile Nextel/Boost/Sprint

The advertisement is showing the LOWEST POSSIBLE PLAN RATE of $69.99 which is for 450 Anytime Minutes. This is a marketing action, designed to show people what is the rate for the least amount of minutes. Much like T-Mobile only advertises the 300 Whenever MyFaves or 600/1000 Whenever for $39.99 and $49.99.

As for your account, you have 1500 Anytime minutes. Your 1500 Anytime minutes will be applied now to only land line calls (to/from), International calls (plus the long distance international rate for call), and calls to your voicemail, or any other non-direct dialed calls to mobile phones (via voicemail call back).

The 450 minutes mentioned is NOT applicable to your account, since it is a "suggested rate plan" as I have mentioned above.

"Unlimited Any Mobile, Anytime" was designed specifically for the growing wireless community. I looked at all my phone contacts, and counted only a handful of land line numbers. Meaning, for many people, myself included, this technically is unlimited calling since I tend to only call mobile phones and not land lines.

I hope this explains a lot for you.

Hey Marc have you turned your TV on yet? LOL The program was launched on Sep 10th and last night I saw the commercial about 5 times from about 10PM on till past midnight eastern time. It's out there buddy with the Sprint CEO up front.

I got an e-mail yesterday with the announcement. I was happier then a pig in slop. I am on the road a lot and most of the calls I make are from my cell phone to others that are not all on the Sprint/Nextel network. I like this concept because you are not limited to whom you may call unlike the other carriers that give you a circle of friends and charge you more if you want to include others over your limit. Sprint has been losing customers the last couple years because people jumped ship to AT&T. What people don't understand is that the I-phone is not really all that. Right now AT&T with the addition of new I-phone users is having a run on apps and downloads and it is slowing the system down so bad they are dropping calls. The best unknown secret it that despite all the bragging about who has the fastest or most reliable 3G network all along it has been Sprint according to PC Magazine. Not AT&T or Verizon. Now Sprint has come out with 4G and expanding. When it comes to the Push to talk "Nextel" phones no one even comes close. Nextels work off the cell sites directly where the imitators use a web based system which relies and the site. If the site is bogged down so is the communication. Also the Nextel phones cam be programmed to work as stand alone walkie talkies where those others can't So even if you are in an area with no signal they can still be used. They were widely used that way during the search and rescue missions post Katrina. I want to upgrade to the Palm Pree but I am waiting to see how it does first. I bought an Instinct because I thought it would blow the I-phone away but I should have waited.

Dude chill out a bit.

You ask:  How can Sprint determine the number is now a mobile number from a recently ported land line?

the answer is simple. There is a nation wide data base that lists all the numbers that are assigned to cell phones and other mobile devices. Even if someone ports over a landline number it goes on the list. You can also do a reverse lookup of the number and it will tell you if it is a mobile number or not and the area it is in. You won't get the users info just the info I mentioned.

You ask:What happens if a call is rated "ANYTIME" but is in fact an "ANY MOBILE" call?

Once again I am sure customer service can check the number on a database to see what type of number it is.

You said: Since this is a change in contractual plans...Technically I did NOT sign up for this feature... Will I be given the option to cancel my plan without incurring and ETF?

Maybe you didn't read what was said correctly. There will be no change in the contract nor will and extension be required

You say: Sprint REALLY needs to tell people that this Any Mobile, Anytime change DOES NOT go in effect till the NEXT BILL CYCLE.

That is true but if you want it before then just  call *2 from your Sprint or Nextel handset ans cusotmer service will set you right up

How do I know? My billing cycle ends at midnight of the 8th of the month. It starts on the 9th. I got the e-mail yesterday saying this program started on the 10th. I called up and within less then 5 count them 5 minutes it was added to my account.

As far as it goes maybe they already added it to your account because of your billing cycle date.

Sprint has to do something to get it's customers back because they are at a very big disadvantage compared to AT&T and Verizon because they don't have the same resources as they do being that both are major landline phone companies.

I don't know how old you are but there was a time when AT&T was the parent company of all the phone companies till the government broke it up and formed 7 major regional bells. and other smaller companies. Well as the saying goes. What goes around comes around right now there are only 3 phones companies AT&T Verizon and Qwest and in time Qwest will be bought out by 1 of those 2 and even later on Verizon or AT&T will buy the other out or merge and we will be back to one phone company. Does the word Monopoly ring a bell? No pun intended.

So chill out and using all caps is not polite. I am sure you like being YELLED at.

Well, I'm glad I followed the comments on this post.  I called into Sprint customer service yesterday morning after I saw the announcement on their website (around 10 am), just to confirm when it would go into effect on my account.  My new billing cycle started on the 9th, the day before the new changes were announced on the 10th.  The rep I spoke with told me that it had automatically gone into effect on my account.  I've learned to always follow up on things like this with Sprint, and after seeing some comments here about it going into effect on the next billing cycle, I called back into CS a few minutes ago, since I made some mobile-to-mobile calls yesterday based on the information that I was given about my account.

Sure enough, the rep today told me that since my new billing cycle started on the 9th and the changes went into effect on the 10th, my account would not be updated until the start of my October billing cycle.  Unfortunately, the rep really was not hearing my comments of what the previous rep told me the day before, and once again, I had to really persist and persist to even get her to check into the possibility of making the adjustment for me.  It wouldn't have bothered me one bit if I had been told the truth up front.  I've lived with my plan without mobile-to-mobile for over three years, and one more month wouldn't bother me a bit.  I do not like being given misinformation, though, and it seems to happen way too often with Sprint.  I won't even get into the issues with the original Instinct phone that I am still putting up with.

After several minutes of "discussion" and repeated requests from me to look into the possibility of correcting this on my account, the rep finally did some checking and supposedly made it "live" on my account now.  You bet, I will be calling back in sometime next week to verify once again, too.

Sprint, I really don't understand why you can't get communications on big changes like this out to those on your frontlines any better than you do.  Surely you have ways to get quick communications and updates out to your frontlines that are answering the phones, *especially* on something as big as this!  That announcement was live on your website yesterday morning, and yet, the CS rep that answered the phone when I called didn't even know for sure when it would go into effect.  I can understand and excuse some things in communicating with frontline reps, but this is not one of them.  This wasn't something that just came up a couple of days earlier.

Again, I thank you for the new feature.  I think you just need to hear more of these situations about what happens on your frontline, in hopes that someone in management there will find a way to make improvements because, quite frankly, I have really not seen any in the 3 1/2 years I've been with Sprint.  Maybe next time, you should delay the launch one day, or at least until you get a "signoff" (digital or otherwise) from every frontline rep that they know the details about what has changed.  What's the point in making such nice improvements if you are just going to continue to upset so many people in the process?

Next time, get a recording up and LIVE for customers to hear with the basic details BEFORE you publish ANY announcements.  Just think of all the money that would save you, how it would help folks like me that just want the real details, and all the misunderstandings and issues that would be avoided.  That was NOT in place yesterday when I called.

I have to admit...this is awesome and glad Sprint is setting a new trend.  So much for My Circle and Fav5, lol.

Anyways...this is great for those who are not on Simply Everything.  However, what about us who are on S/E, are we not going to get a nice perk since it does not matter what US number we call as it is since we have unlimited minutes?

Another question I have is...

What if you (not having S/E) are roaming and call a mobile number? Is it "free" roaming or will your minutes get used since you are roaming?

I guess if your minutes are used while roaming, the S/E at least has no roaming at all...so maybe that would be the perk still, lol.  I am just curious about it.  If roaming is free on a mobile to mobile call, I just might call in and drop my plan down from S/E and save about $30-40 a month.  Sprint...I would think of a nice perk for those to keep the full S/E plan instead of dropping down to save money.

johnkirchner,

Regarding your question about using Any Mobile, Anytime while you are roaming - Any Mobile, Anytime works the same way that general mobile-to-mobile works, which means that minutes will be taken from the anytime bucket of minutes while a customer is roaming.  If you are making a call while roaming and it is a weekend or after 7pm, it will be unlimited, but the customer will use their bucket of minutes during "peak" hours while roaming.

You are correct that Simply Everything is still the pinnacle of unlimited plans.  If you truly want the worry-free, unlimited experience, Simply Everything is still the right way to go.  Any Mobile, Anytime is the next level of unlimited wireless that is a phenomenal value and can be virtually unlimited for many people.

Dan Hesse is brilliant!   No, I'm not a Sprint employee - just an older person who appreciates Sprint's respectful marketing.   I switched to Sprint about 2 1/2 years ago, and have been very satisfied.

Not bad! I almost left sprint for T-mobile. They kept messing up my bills, but they seem 2 have been improving. especially cust. Service. this plan is the best unlimited plan out, granted not including landlines and roming.

Now all they need is to get some phones.......which i see there trying......would love to see that blackberry touch!!!

Instinct HD By oct or ending sept in Best buy

Its good having M2M with any cellphone in the US, better if you have it available as an add-on feature.

If Sprint had the Any mobile Anytime as an add-on probably will cost 10 bucks

Not by the way they've defined the feature...

"If you have an Everything Data Plan, you get Any Mobile, Anytime."

They don't even allow it on Everything Messaging plans, ONLY on Everything Data... Sprint Plan

Sorry!

Just thought of another question i had on this, if someone calls me (from their mobile, on their network), does that get treated as an "any mobile, anytime" call too?  if so, than THAT would be really sweet.  N9NRA

Yes indeed! That counts. Here it is direct from Sprint:

Any Mobile, Anytime: Unlimited domestic calls from the Sprint network to and from ANY U.S. mobile phone regardless of carrier. Any network, any time. Applies when directly dialing/receiving standard voice calls between domestic wireless numbers as determined when the call is placed using indep. 3rd party and Sprint databases. Stnd. roaming rates/restrictions apply. Only available with select Sprint Plans and while on the Nationwide Sprint or Nextel National Networks (excludes calls to voicemail, 411, and other indirect methods).

I used to work for a mobile dealer and there are a bunch of strings and technical queries that are performed and MUST be constructed correctly in-order for a land line to be ported to cellular, and vice-versa. If it's any consolation the next time to decide to stop in a mall, pay your bill in person, or have a technical issue with your phone, ask why it only takes about a day to port "Cellular to Cellular" and it may take up to a week to port from "Land line to Cellular". I'm sure you'll sway your thoughts in the right direction and start promoting this news and service to more family and friends.

Let's get the word out that Sprint has what you want, now come and take it...

LUV IT! I have been w/Sprint for many years. No other provider has offered the same level of choices in products and plans. However, in this economy, I have been forced to review some of my expenditures...Well, THANK YOU Sprint, for stepping up and being the first again...to make this valuable addition to your line.  This has motivated me to post these comments. May this "whats better for our clients, is better for us" change, spread to other equally challenged conglomorants...COMCAST, ya heard me! LOL  Thanks SOOOO much!!! Sprint...you rock!

Its about time.  So glad Sprint was finally able to offer a plan better than any other mobile service provider.  Its better late than never.  It will definitely save minutes and money.  Less to worry about. One question: Will the plans anytime minutes be reduced since they will only apply to land lines and toll-free numbers? I would hope so, money wise it would save a lot of us more money, now that most of those minutes will remain unused.
