Jeffrey Cushing of Atlanta accidentally ran over his Nextel Direct Connect phone with his truck.
It still worked.
Cushing, an information technology manager, was so impressed that he contacted Sprint and asked if he could tell his story. We made a video of Cushing describing his mishap and his newfound appreciation for the durability and reliability of Nextel Direct Connect push-to-talk phones.
Firefighters, law enforcement and many other first responders rely on the Nextel Direct Connect technology allowing them to connect with colleagues in less than a second.
Other workers, family and friends also use the service that is great for quick "get in/get out" conversations needed to obtain answers, share information, coordinate projects or make quick decisions.
Sprint remains committed to supporting customers who rely on the Nextel National Network – the fastest national push-to-talk network and largest push-to-talk community.
In recent months Sprint has expanded the choices of Nextel phones to include the Motorola Debut i856, the first slider phone offering push-to-talk service, and the BlackBerry Curve 8350i Smartphone, which offers Direct Connect in addition to the other applications and functions that have made Blackberry phones so popular.
More information about these Sprint Nextel push-to-talk services is available at sprint.com/nextel.
Not every Direct Connect user has shared Cushing’s experience in putting their phone to such an extreme test. But many more share his enthusiasm for the service.
Tell us your story about how you rely on Nextel Direct Connect.
Ok I'm glad the man ran over his rugged phone and it still survived but good god sprint should have done away with Iden years ago. I'm so sick of reading about sprint's losses when they have a better product than any other carrier. Verizon is bleeding sprint's PTN network and it's becoming increasingly more expensive to maintain three networks(wimax). Not to mention Iden is inferior when it comes to reception, giving Sprint a bad reputation in that aspect. I personally will never leave Sprint and would love to see them do well.
What age do you think that you should get children a phone do you think turning 14 next month is old enough?
You really should have taken your phone to an ACTUAL Sprint Store, not a 3rd party store. At a Corporate Store this situation would have been completely different. I'm sure they do not always stand by what those store do, they are 100% commission and most would likely do anything they can to make a buck.
My friend just bought an old muscle car to work on as a hobby. 1970 Mach 1 Mustang <- Sweet
Yesterday, I agreed to drive to NH with him to pick up the car. (and throw some brake lines in it so the ride home was not fatal.)
It was around 4:00 PM, I knew the traffic would be brutal so I went mobile with my 598U by Sierra Wireless.(which was free from Sprint)
My device wasn't in the best of shape and eventually led to me throwing it out the Window. <- that was the moment I decided to get the MiFi
We ended up stopping in Lawrence, MA to grab some money from an ATM.
Luckily for me there was a Sprint store located in the same complex as the ATM. <- I figured I would run into a Sprint store at some point.
While my friend walked to the ATM, I walked to the Sprint store to seek out my new MiFi™ 2200 by Novatel Wireless. I had an upgrade <- sweet yearly upgrades
To make a long story short, less than 10 minutes later I was browsing with my new MiFi. <- I would not of done this transaction at this time if I felt I would of been in the Sprint store for an hour.
All charges were added to my Sprint account. Also did I mention the Sprint service rep even filled out my mail in rebate-> placed it into the envelope -> filled out the envlope -> "All you need to do now is place a stamp on it and mail it!
Bravo Sprint
PS - He had an iPhone so we ended up speed testing the whole time. I think we all know the results. (Sprint smoked AT&T.) Seems to be a common occurrence.
I had my i580 for nearly 2 years before it finally met it's demise. Working in a warehouse, I have dropped it from 3rd floor catwalks onto the cement floor below numerous times and only had to pop the bettery back in and it was working great again. It has survived overnight stays outside in the rain and the dog using it as a chew toy. The final abuse occured last weekend while I was doing some work in the yard and ran over it with the backhoe. The best part is though, that it still worked even after being ran over. The outer display still worked and it still was able to make and recieve calls and 2-way. The only obvious damage was that the inner display cracked.
The longest I was ever able to keep a phone in working condition prior to this was on average 6-9 months. Motorola has really got it right with this model.

I love Sprint, your everything plans are the best! I have been with you since 2003. It is rare for me to be so loyal to one company. I love my Blackberry: I have the Red Curve 8330m. It even has a name: Frida Curve! And I am excited to move to the newest BB in February! Frida Curve started acting up, freezing, and re-starting all by itself. I took Frida to "Sprint Store By Acs Wireless" in Santa Fe Springs, CA about 3 weeks ago. The tech inspected the phone & they verified no water damage, abuse, etc. They even said that this is a common issue & it can't be fixed.
There was a scratch in the screen: they returned the phone to me with the scratch a small crack, some of the keys no long spring up & down. Oh and they left a hair between the two screens! Nice! But the tech said they were ordering the replacement and to pick it up in two days. I stayed calm and patient about the scratch becoming a crack, the messed up key, and THE HAIR LEFT BETWEEN MY SCREENS because they stated a replacement was being ordered under warranty.
That Friday, I called to make sure the replacement was in the store before I drove down. Then the bait & switch began... The clerk said he wasn't going to be able to replace the phone because of the scratch on the screen (which they made into a little crack). Then he caught himself in his lying: first he said Sprint rejected the replacement, then he said they never submitted it because it would never be approved...
But hey THERE IS A BAIT & SWITCH SOLUTION! He offered to repair the crack, which was a scratch before I went in to the store for $100! Nice! Lie to me, crack my screen, mess up 4 keys so they aren't springy anymore and LEAVE A HAIR BETWEEN MY SCREENS and I get to pay you $100 to fix!
So me being loyal to Sprint, always showing off Frida the Curve to everyone, and bragging about your Everything/Unlimited plans earns me 1) having my phone wrecked in the store 2) being lied to about my replacement coming in two days (then they don't even call me to say the were breaking their agreement to replace the phone) 3) they show the true purpose was a bait & switch to get $100 off of me but would still leave me with screwed up phone that FREEZES & RE-STARTS by itself! Way to go Sprint!
If you don't have Sprint yet... well I am not sure I can recommend them anymore... I am trying to stay loyal, but WOW, are these contract Sprint stores allowed to do this? If it has Sprint's name on the door, then it is a Sprint store so that means Sprint stands by these actions!
And let me tell you, the scratch which is now a crack is annoying to look at, the messed up keys make me grit my teeth (I am a power user of my phone), but the hair left between the screens makes me sick!
