Sprint is the first wireless carrier to bring Android 2.2 to customers using the award-winning HTC EVO™ 4G beginning Tuesday, Aug. 3

Posted on Jul 29, 2010 | 145 Comments

Android 2.2 offers HTC EVO 4G feature enhancements including Bluetooth® voice dialing, built-in Flash, the ability to store apps to the memory card and much, much more

The award-winning HTC EVO 4G just got that much better. We are excited to announce that beginning the week of Aug. 1; Sprint will begin rolling out the Android 2.2 upgrade to its HTC EVO 4G customers.

Sprint will be the first wireless carrier to bring1 the latest version of Android to its customers. The Android 2.2 software release provides a significant number of feature enhancements, including:

  • Voice Dialing Over Bluetooth.
  • Application Storage on External Memory, giving users more storage room for all their apps.
  • Camera 4-way rotation allows the camera icons to rotate with the camera.
  • Improved Browser Performance including a faster JavaScript engine and Flash 10x Support improving the user’s ability to view videos and available content associated with web pages.

"Sprint is thrilled with our customers' response to HTC EVO 4G and the innovative and exciting experience it offers,” said Fared Adib, vice president – Product Development for Sprint. “It is exciting for us to lead the industry in bringing the Android 2.2 update to these customers and improve on the amazing experience they receive with America's first 4G capable phone.”

Easy Downloading

Sprint will begin sending update notifications to users in waves beginning Tuesday, Aug. 3 and the upgrade should be available for all HTC EVO 4G users by the middle of August.

The notification will let the users know that the update is available and it will provide the simple two-step over-the-air download process.

  1. Users will receive a notification that Android 2.2 is available for download.
  2. Once the user has downloaded the update, they will be prompted to install the update. The user will be notified that their device will be disabled during the installation process. The phone will be ready to use once the process completes.

For those who just can’t wait to get Android 2.2, there will be an easy user initiated option to download the upgrade. Customers can access the software update through their HTC EVO 4G under the Settings Menu > System Updates > HTC Software Update. This will initiate the three-step process also.

UPDATE - The Android 2.2 update will not wipe your personal data (contacts, apps, settings, photos, etc.).  That said, it is always prudent to back up your device before any major software update.  There are many backup utilities available in Android Market.

Rave Reviews and Accolades for EVO

Check out what the top tech reviewers are saying about the device.

Walt Mossberg with the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.) says:
"The HTC EVO 4G, when used on Sprint's 4G network, offers the highest consistent downstream data speeds I have ever seen on a cellular network. It also has a number of other strong features: a front-facing camera for video chatting, and the ability to serve as a Wi-Fi hotspot (for an extra fee of $30 a month) that can simultaneously connect up to eight laptops or other devices to the Internet."

Chris Ziegler with Engadget says:

"Let us be crystal clear: we love this phone. Nay, we adore it. ...truly one of the best smartphones ever made..."

Sascha Segan with PC Magazine says:

"...if you live online, the EVO offers a big, beautiful, and powerful window to the world."

"The EVO starts with a world-class 3G smartphone and adds 4G as a "turbo boost" option. If you're an intensive Web user, you'll like it even without 4G."

Bonnie Cha with CNET says:

"Overall, the HTC Evo 4G is, hands-down, the best smartphone that Sprint has to offer and certainly ranks as one of the best Android phones on the market today."

Jessica Mintz with the Associated Press says:

"HTC's Evo 4G phone is fast, powerful and fun to use — as long as your heart isn't set on tapping into the speedier new network it was designed for."

Mark Spoonauer with Laptop Magazine says:

"Even if 4G hasn’t yet reached your neck of the woods, the Evo 4G is a killer device thanks to its zippy processor, huge display, and an interface that makes Android more intuitive and user-friendly. While the keyboard could be better and the battery life longer, the Evo 4G richly deserves our Editors’ Choice award. It’s a no-brainer for Sprint customers, and a tempting choice for those on other carriers."

Matt Buchanan with Gizmodo says:

"It's actually staggering how different the experience is of using a phone that has over 4 inches of display, diagonally, versus more conventional screens, which run closer to 3.5 inches. Even when you're using the same OS at the same resolution—in this case, Android 2.1 with HTC's Sense UI at 800x480, seen on their last few Android phones.

It's kind of like when the jeans you've been wearing forever start to fit a little too snugly because you've been eating a little too well, and you finally cave and buy a bigger pair of jeans, there's a mindblowing moment when you close the button for the first time of how much freedom you suddenly have to breathe. So you kind of hyperventilate."

CNET, LAPTOP Magazine and eWeek gave HTC EVO 4G awards for Best of Show when it was announced at CTIA this spring. It was also recently cited on MobileTechReview’s Best Smartphones and Best Touch Screen Phones lists.

Customer favorites on HTC EVO 4G’s long list of features include the 4.3-inch screen, dual 8MP video camera capable of capturing HD quality and front-facing 1.3MP camera. They also appreciate the HDMI output jack making it simple to start a movie for your children in the backseat of the car with the phone and then connect to an HDTV to finish it when you arrive at home.1 Business customers highlight its super-fast 1GHz processor, simultaneous voice and data capability in 4G or Wi-Fi coverage areas enabling Web surfing and more during conversation, and built-in mobile hotspot for up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices.2

sadly in the benchmark tests the new samsung galaxy S phones, droid X and nexus BEAT the evo by a long shot, but its because of SENSE and the CAP put on our phones, besides that the evo was the first phone released of its kind, the droid and such had time to maximize and take note of the mistakes made with the evo (software speed wise)

i really think that 2.2 will UNLOCK the evo to what it was suspose to be when it was launched.

killing droid x, and galaxy S phones..

This update really needs to be made available for Hero and Moment users. There seems to be a lot of speculation that the Hero/Moment don't have the hardware to support Froyo. From the original post, the enhancements are:

The Android 2.2 software release provides a significant number of feature enhancements, including:

  • Voice Dialing Over Bluetooth

Surely voice dialing over bluetooth doesn't require recent hardware.

  • Application Storage on External Memory, giving users more storage room for all their apps.

This is definately an enhancement that would be beneficial to every Sprint Android phone. The only hardware limitation would be size of the SD card. I can't even count how many times I have taken my Hero phone into a Sprint store for support, and the techs want to immediately reset my phone. If I could store my apps on the SD card, this would not be an issue.

  • Camera 4-way rotation allows the camera icons to rotate with the camera.

This to me seems like a simple update. I use the camera on the phone, but regardless of whether it is being held vertically or horizontally, I can still see the icons and be able to read the text on them if I need to change a camera setting.

  • Improved Browser Performance including a faster JavaScript engine and Flash 10x Support improving the user’s ability to view videos and available content associated with web pages.

As I understand it, the Flash is what requires the recent hardware. Sprint, you disabled features like live wallpaper when you released Android 2.1. Not that it matters since apparently using live wallpapers reduces the battery life. The improved browser performance is something I want to see. I am getting fed up with having to turn the phone off, take the battery out, wait a few seconds, put the battery back, and turn the phone on because the Internet has decided to stop working. This procedure is becoming something I have to do at least three times a week and about every two days.

Don't tell me that a phone that was released in October 2009 and is not even a year old yet is already considered to be end of life. Surely Google/HTC did not develop a phone to be out on the market for only 10 months before just "ignoring" it and moving on. Is the intention to take the Evo, update it from 2.1 to 2.2, and then forget about it because another new and better phone will be on the market?

I don't know where you've been seeing all the Evos, but they are not to be found in most of the country. There may be a stray one or two in brick and mortor stores from time to time, but you can't buy them online from Sprint. That is why for the past since July 1st, the Sprint website has had a "sold out" message, without the option to pre-order or sign up for first-come first-serve orders. I think this is the best phone out there (today), but Sprint/HTC really dropped the ball on this one by not securing enough components to build the phones to meet demand. Wouldn't be surprised if people lost their jobs for this *****-up.

@Nem_Zero, I think you have a valid question about whether the phone will be wiped or not.  The last OTA update for the EVO did not wipe the phone, but then that wasn't an entire OS revision either.  It sounds though like this 2.2 upgrade is being packaged the same way as the last, and maybe we will in fact not have our phones wiped out.  That would be cool.  I'm betting that since it is automatic their will be no wipe.  Nevertheless, for me that is one of the sweet things about the EVO.  I use the Google syncing services of calendar, contacts, and email so a restore is much quicker and simpler than on other devices.

@uhale, I'm pretty confident in saying that Sprint would like to see more availability of the EVO for sales too.  I'm guessing the real blame lies with HTC, or even further one or more of their suppliers.  There are so many phones of this class coming out now that shortages are developing in some of the components.  For example, Samsung makes the AMOLED screens found in some devices.  HTC has had to decide not to use these screens anymore, opting to move to Super LCD screens, because Samsung can't provide them in a timely manner, and they keep what they make for their own devices (such as the forthcoming EPIC on Sprint).  One would think that HTC would also like to produce as many EVO's as possible if the demand is there, so it has to be some sort of component shortage that some smaller manufacturer isn't able to keep up with demand with.

@uhale, @JACKG058, Sprint would definitely want to see more inventory for EVO sales.  We know the demand is there, and we are doing everything we can to get inventory back as fast as possible.  The supply shortage is an industry issue and is affecting more than just Sprint - it is also the reason it's nearly impossible to find a Droid Incredible as well as Droid X after their initial run.  Dan Hesse mentioned this and the reasons behind it in his CNBC interview following Wednesday's earnings announcement - http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=1553969979&play=1.  The supply issue is mentioned about a minute into the interview.

Thanks for the reply Shawn.  I totally agree with your analysis that the shortage isn't the fault of Sprint, nor do I really think HTC is at fault.  Most major manufacturers are going to have to rely on suppliers for some part of their assembly of product, and that is just a fact of life.  Hopefully the suppliers who are having difficulty getting the parts to HTC can step it up and resolve their issues.  For me, I'm just happy I was at the local Sprint store at 5:30 a.m. on launch day to get mine.  I've never done that for any other cell phone but it sure ended up being worth it to me!

@Lonnie @Jack - We never stated any specific time for the manual download in the official post here (for verification, Engadget copied and pasted our original text in their updated story under "Show Press Release" at the end of their post. Note that they do not have the "updated" text about not wiping the device like we inserted this morning).

There is a difference between announcement and availability.  I can't really speak to the deck that was leaked to Engadget, but 1) there is no telling how old that deck was and 2) planned dates can and often do change.  That's why official announcements are the official announcements.

You're going to have to bring your phone into the Sprint Store and have them install a fix. Even if you try to flash a stock ROM you won't get the update without the fix. It has something to do with the update.me file that gets locked.

Sorry but no.  If you are rooted and running CM6 (froyo) you really do not want to immediately install the OTA update as it will break your root and you may attain it again, but you may not.

Wait at most one day after release of the official update and a rooted version will be available to flash.  Do not take your rooted phone in to Sprint if you want to keep root.

@ Wet Blanket: Thanks...

Its actually an international parts shortage that's preventing HTC from manufacturing the phone they sell to Sprint. The shortage is caused by the reduction in production that was prompted by the recession. So, because the phone is sold to Sprint by HTC, and the parts are scarce- it's out of both Sprint and HTC's hands. Other HTC smartphones (or may I say superphones?) are also short on inventory, such as the Incredible.

It wasn't the not getting it that I was questioning, it was the idea that it was released at all. I don't see anyone on the internet saying they've received 2.2 today. Personally, I don't think it will come out until Monday (or Tuesday). I'd be happy to be wrong.

The problem isn't that Sprint isn't trying to get the phones available.  HTC the manufacturer (NOT SPRINT) is having issues with getting enough screens for the device from Samsung.  This is completely out of Sprint's hands, believe me they would gladly put one in everyone's hands that wants one in a heartbeat.

Yes, if the app allows itself to be installed on the SD card, then after the 2.2 update it can be installed on the SD card.  Not sure how it'll work with previously installed apps - you may have to un-install and re-install from the Market.

Not a stray one or two. The Best Buy I go to had several cases of them.... In stock, and I went back a few days later and they were sold out, went back a week later and again a few cases of them stacked up on the shelf.

I did not state you can get them from Sprint.(Needless to say I frequent that candy store).

Since then I have turned several of my friends on to the Evo and they have got one within days.

I also did not state they are always in stock at any one time, yes they sell out, they are extremely popular, but what I have seen and heard is that they do in fact get them regulary.

FYI as I responded to this I checked out BB website for availability, the white Evo is in stock ( 1930 hrs, July 30 ), the black one is out of stock.

To correct your comment on Sprint dropping the ball on this is not a correct statement. You can bet Sprint would love to fill a warehouse with the Evo phone to be able to distribute. The problem is with the manufacturers of the components that make up the phone having shortages of stock. This is the current trend in inventory with businesses globally due to the economy.

That's what I've been saying, the Evo's are out there, albeit in short supply but if you search around you can snag one.

Took me a total of 2 days to round one up. Don't rely on the Spring website, that's where the masses first go and is the first to sell out. The Best Buys, Radio Shacks, and online places have them on and off. Its like anything this popular they are selling like wildfire and if you want one bad enough its worth a little diligence to search one out.

I will say it is without question worth it to find one, The device is awsome............ nuff said.

OK, I'm getting beat up here. It appears, from the numerous comments, that you can still find Evos out there if you look hard enough. I could go store to store searching, and hope to get lucky. I'd rather wait and buy online for convenience and because buying from sprint.com will save me $122, I'd like to buy direct from them (2 phones x $36 activation, and $50 SAVE50 discount). My whole point is that Sprint/HTC should have anticipated the demand for this amazing phone. They probably did, but were still unable to secure enough components, probably screens, to make enough. It appears to me that the shortages are far greater than those for other "superphones". Apple sold 8.4 million iPhone's in the third quarter of 2010. Millions of brand new iPhone 4s sold&shipped within a month. By dropped the ball, I put the blame on Sprint, it is their phone, the buck stops with them. With such a hot phone, they should have had signed contracts long ago to guarantee a certain number of phones. At the very least, Sprint should take "pre-orders" through their website like they did in early/mid June, like Verizon is doing for the Droid X and Apple is doing for the iPhone 4. It's one thing to wait, knowing you'll get one by a certain time, but it's an entirely different story to wait indefinitely. Sprint is allowing some (USPS/Federal/other) customers to pre-order, but not the general public. Don't get me wrong, I love Sprint's prices, service and the Evo, so I'll wait, just not patiently.

Like all others on this website i wus really excited about the froyo update for my phone. I rencently installed it to my phone and the messaging app got a little bitt slower but i thought that wus maybe because sprint added some new features to it. Then i went to check out the camcorder and that wus the first problem. When i pushed record it wouldnt let me record the video. Then i pushed the home button and my phone did not respond. I then turned the phone off becasue it started to act unresponsive and went back to the camcorder app. It then let me record a video but when i went to vies it it would not show the video. It just showed a picture of the video all the way through. It just seems like 2.1 wus faster as far as phone wise not the web.

The really *huge* difference with 2.2 is the overall performance gain of 200-500%.  Yeah, that's not a typo: 2x - 5x faster than what the phone is now.  They did this by doing away with the Java VirtualMachine (basically an emulator) that all the apps ran under before and Android now has a full "jitting" engine.  This is just a new-ish slang term for a framework that converts from one computer language to another on the fly.  This is the same way Microsoft's .NET framework works.  Hopefully that wasn't *too* technical.

First, thank you Sprint and HTC for negating the naysayers.  You not only got the download available by your officially posted date, you did it an evening early.  Kudos to you!

Secondly, what a smooth update, especially considering this was an OS update.  Not even the slightest glitch, and I did both my EVO and my wife's EVO.  You are showing clearly that you are in the market to compete, and I'm rooting for you.

Love the phone, but haning an issue with how the upgrade changes e-mail handling.  It now 'removes' mail on the phone (doesn't put it in the deleted file) for any messages not on the server.  Think about this nasty trap:  If the phone deletes from the server when it pulls e-mail, then not finding it when it checks again, it 'removes' the e-mail from the phone.  So you NEVER see it and it is gone.  So I now have to delete to save an e-mail.  That puts it in the deleted folder where I can see it.  Rather counterintuitive - but the only way to save e-mail is to delete it.

Since my HTC Evo downloaded the update, my calendar on my phone will not sync the event to my Outlook calendar on my PC.  Anyone know what I need to do to change this?

I couldn't agree more! What's the point in living in a 4G city if you can't get the phone to use it? The stores get 2 or 3, every 10 days or so and they are NEVER available online. Once again, Sprint has dropped the ball when they could be ruling the world. Nice job guys! (Why I stay with you, I'll never know)

Still waiting for the update, another disappointment.  Even the HTC Software Update doens't help; it says No Update is available.

@Rebecca:  There are reports on AndroidCentral forums that oftentimes issues after the update can be resolved with a hard reset.  Unfortunately, that is a wipe of the device so you'll have to restore your contacts, calendar, apps, etc.  However, if you are still having these issues after updating the hard reset may be your best recourse.  I went ahead and did it and the browser seems to be way faster, whereas before I couldn't see the alleged 200-300% increase in speed.  Now, it is blazing fast.

So two months and still no EVO.  I am sick of seeing commercials for this phone.  Apple stores have the Iphone 4 actually in stock.  So I am more than likely going to leave Sprint.  I don't care if the specs are better for the EVO.  What good is a spec when there is no phone?  Also, now when you call telesales they are pushing the Epic.  So Sprint doesn't even think they will get EVO any time soon.  What a waste Sprint.  How many customers do you have to lose before you start to do anything right?

This post should have used the full name for the phone: "HTC Evo 4G - Limited Edition".

Sprint keeps blaming Samsung, since they make the screens. Well some IDIOT at Sprint ok'd Samsung to make the screens for the phone and believed they had the capacity to do it! Sprint is to blame here for very poor planning and execution. It's interesting though that they are pushing the new Samsung phone, which retails higher and can be reserved. Hmmm.... even if my "conspiracy theory" is wrong, it sure doesn't make Sprint look good.

The Spring sales manages at Tysons Square in Virginia told me last week that Evo 4gs were being delivered on Monday (yesterday), and that I should get there early because the line would be long.  I arrived at 8:30 am (store opened at 10 am). Others joined me. When the door opened at 10 am the manager told me that they did no have any Evos and that none were expected...he doesn't know when any will be delivered. He was very defensive about what the sales manager told me (and others who chimed in said the same), until I finally told him I'm old enough to be his mother and that I'm waiting to hear two words.  He ducked his head and said "I'm sorry."  Without looking me in the eye. I insisted that he take names and contact information for all of us who were waiting. He agreed to contact us and hold phones for two hours.  We'll see.  I understand that Sprint can't get enough parts from it's contractors. What I don't understand is why the company won't just take my credit card, put my name on a list, and tell me when to go to the store to get it.  After this experience I don't know if I trust the store manager to actually hold a phone for two hours and call me.  I have called all the other stores in my area. Everyone says the same thing, they are on back order. We don't know when they will come in.  Now I read about another new, exciting phone for delivery on 8/31. Will that phone compete with the Evo for parts?

IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO STOCK THIS PHONE YOU SHOULD NOT ADVERTISE IT IN ALL OF YOUR STORES.
