Sprint Stands Ready to Help the FCC Expand Availability of Broadband

On Tuesday, March 16th, the Federal Communication Commission will release a National Broadband Plan to provide affordable high-speed Internet services to all Americans.

Today, Vonya B. McCann, Sprint’s senior vice president for government affairs, released the following video statement commending the FCC for its months of work in creating this plan:

“In yesterday’s dialup world, it would have taken several minutes to download this video. Today, with broadband, it probably took you a few seconds.

Broadband is here, but it is not everywhere. In America we face a challenge: not all of us have access to high speed broadband at affordable prices. As the first and only national carrier to offer wireless 4G, Sprint is doing our part to change that, but we believe our industry can do more.

This week, the FCC, under the leadership of Chairman Julius Genachowski, will issue the country’s first National Broadband Plan. The plan is designed to give the country a roadmap to regain our position as the world’s leader in broadband technology and innovation.

At Sprint, we stand ready to help the FCC and Congress achieve this critical goal. Broadband is the engine of our future, growing our economy, our workforce, and our society, and its success rests on us all working together – connected.”

Background on Sprint’s views about Broadband in America:

As the FCC developed the plan, it asked the public to submit comments on how the plan can best benefit all citizens. Here are some the key recommendations that Sprint presented on January 27, 2010: (http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/document/view?id=7020357015):

• Preserving competitive access and rates among all broadband providers.

“Broadband competition cannot survive – much less thrive – unless the Commission releases the local exchange carriers’ chokehold on competitive broadband deployment that results from their monopoly on special access connections.” (Page 2)

• Ensuring that adequate spectrum is available to effectively deploy mobile broadband for commercial use in urban and rural areas.
“To enable the most efficient and intensive use of spectrum, Sprint recommends the FCC continue its move away from eligibility restrictions, service limitations and other calls for narrow spectrum set-asides. Instead, the Commission should encourage the deployment of fully flexible commercial wireless networks that use common internet protocol language to offer a wide array of performance, capacity and security options for every type of business imaginable.” (Page 13)

• Reform the cost structure for transferring voice traffic between wireless and wireline carriers.
“A vibrant broadband marketplace can only succeed if the Commission improves the enforcement of its existing rules and policies, and strengthens rules where necessary to ensure fair competition and prevent disruption to services.” (Page 22)

Hesse said that almost two thirds of physicians use a smartphone today. More than 80% will be using a smartphone in two years.

Rising costs mean the United States spends more than any other industrialized country in the world on healthcare.
Chronic conditions such as obesity and diabetes, which account for 85% of healthcare dollars, are on the rise.”

Hesse on how wireless can improve health care:

“You know all those jokes about doctors and bad handwriting? Well it's not so funny when out of the four billion prescriptions written every year, 4% contain errors... some of them the result of that bad handwriting.

Dr. Stuart Weisman, a gastroenterologist in California once said, "The first time I saw a Palm, I realized it was exactly the same size as a prescription pad. I immediately started thinking about how the Internet connected to the Palm could change healthcare."

Inputting patient information directly into a smartphone eliminates the bad handwriting problem. In addition to saving lives, e-prescribing could save as much as $27 billion annually for the US healthcare system.”

“In just a few years, we've gone from looking up home remedies on the Internet to having a smartphone app called FluRadar which provides up-to-date flu information concerning H1N1, and tracks outbreaks geographically. There is a skin cancer application that contains a guide to identifying the shapes and sizes of a benign and malignant melanoma. “

“Have you ever accidentally coughed into your mobile phone? Now you might want to do it on purpose. There is an app that analyzes your cough and tells you whether it is wet or dry and productive or nonproductive. “

“At Washington University in St. Louis, for example, two engineers have invented an ultrasound probe that works on a half-watt of power from a cell phone. That means ultrasound exams could be conducted nearly anywhere, while the image is piped to a doctor far from the scene. The invention could not only cut the cost of ultrasound machines, but also put them in the pockets of EMT's, battlefield medics, school nurses and obstetricians working far from a hospital.”

Forbes Magazine has published a listing of the “most wired cities in the U.S.” and Sprint 4G is credited with helping Raleigh go from #15 to #1 on the list. And perhaps hidden but not to be overlooked is that the top 3 most wired cities on the list – Raleigh, NC, Atlanta and Seattle are all markets where Sprint has launched 4G. “Most wired” is a misnomer – 'connected' is probably a better term. In January, About.com asked readers to nominate their favorite smartphones. From Feb. 1-24, readers were allowed to vote for their favorite through an online poll. The results are in and the winner of the 2010 Reader’s Choice Awards for Smartphones is HTC Hero from Sprint.

HTC Hero took home an overwhelming 81 percent of the vote, and beat out several well-known finalists, including BlackBerry Bold 9700, iPhone 3GS and Motorola Droid.

Even About.com’s device reviewers noted, “While the HTC Hero may not be as well known as its rivals, its victory is not exactly an upset. This phone can match many of the bigger-name devices feature for feature. When I reviewed it last year, I called it the "best Android phone yet." And even after testing the Motorola Droid and the Nexus One, I'd still call the Hero my favorite Android-based device.”

Sprint Supports Earthquake Relief Efforts in the Republic of Chile With Mobile Giving

PC World Publishes Results of 13-City 3G Tests

PC World released results from its latest 13-city 3G tests. For the second consecutive year, Sprint’s reliability rates were second-to-none. Last year, we won “most reliable” outright. This year, we tied AT&T for reliability with T-Mobile and Verizon close behind.

The 13 cities tested were Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Denver, New Orleans, New York, Orlando, Phoenix, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle.

This is yet another impressive third-party nod to our Now Network: While our competitors engaged in tit-for-tat ad wars, Sprint stayed above the fray and quietly and effectively improved our connectivity rates from last year, from 90.5 percent to 94 percent at reasonable speeds. In addition, we received perfect rates in Baltimore, Portland and San Diego.

The PC World story gushes about AT&T’s year-over-year improvements and gives a lot of ink to the carrier’s iPhone data troubles as well as its HSPA buildout. It also notes that Verizon has had trouble keeping up with data demands and dropped slightly in terms of speed and reliability from last year. T-Mobile got high marks for download speeds, especially in New York City and Phoenix, but fell short in reliability compared to Sprint.
In the speed test, AT&T was the clear winner, but PC World gave us high praise for sustaining our speeds in the midst of increased data traffic. The magazine also acknowledged that Sprint is the only Tier 1 carrier building out a 4G network.

In short, here’s how the results break down in the cities in which we performed well:

Sprint customers can receive instant account credit for recycling up to three old cell phones

Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse today announced the launch of an expanded wireless buy-back program for old wireless devices while testifying at a green telecom hearing on Capitol Hill.

Sprint’s expanded Buyback program, intended to boost U.S. wireless recycling rates, now offers an instant account credit to current and new Sprint customers who turn in up to three eligible wireless devices, per active line of service.

Sprint Buyback now accepts all eligible wireless devices, regardless of manufacturer or carrier, through its expanded program.
Customers can take their unwanted phones to one of the more than 1,000 participating Sprint-owned retail stores nationwide.

Currently, there are more than 900 wireless devices that are eligible for an instant credit from Sprint. Device credits range in value from approximately $5 to upwards of $300 depending on the make and model of the device being turned in.

Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse will testify later today before Senator John Kerry (D-MA) and members of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet about sustainability initiatives undertaken by Sprint and the wireless technology industry to benefit the environment.

Excerpts from Dan Hesse's testimony:

"We are in the midst of a new 'green' era. U.S. consumers and the members of this legislative body are sending a 'call to action' for corporations to act in the best interests of our people and our planet. "Today I am proud to announce that Sprint is the first U.S. wireless carrier to establish a set of green design criteria for consumer devices. Moving forward every handset vendor who manufactures handsets to operate on Sprint's networks must produce handsets that meet or exceed Sprint's new green design criteria and specifications."

"Working in partnership with our handset manufactures, Sprint has developed an industry-first environmental "score card" to bolster progress toward Sprint's green design specifications. The criteria in the "score card" better enable Sprint and our vendors to gauge the degree to which each handset manufactured complies with our environmental standards."

"Sprint has been at the forefront of recycling efforts in the wireless industry. In 2008, we made a public commitment to achieve a wireless reuse and recycling rate of 90% as compared to our device sales. Our current wireless rate at the end of 2009 was just over 40%, well ahead of the industry average.

"Today we are announcing the launch of a new, vastly expanded wireless handset buyback program that offers financial incentive, in the form of an instant accout credit to current and new Sprint customers who can turn in up to three eligible wireless devices. Sprint's new, expanded Buyback program can accept all eligible wireless devices, regardless of manufacturer or carrier."

Kayentis experiences Sprint 4G benefits

Kayentis, a Philadelphia-based software provider for the pharmaceutical and health care industry, began experimenting with Sprint 3G/4G USB Modem U300 mobile broadband cards last year.
