Top Instinct Disappointments

While, not all....but most here agree, the Instinct is a decent phone which Sprint did not let live up to it's potential. What is your top Instinct disappointments since June 2008? I'll start with the "intern developer" made updates which made the Instincts performance increasingly worse instead of better and the lack of a properly implemented Java VM (which was done on purposeto force developers to pay $5000 to get locked Sprint API's) which in turn kept even the most basic apps available to almost all other touchscreen java phones from working on the Instinct. This only 2 of many, but my top 2.

Re: Top Instinct Disappointments

the Calendar...not even trying to upload my outlook.

Just using the calendar is SO SO painful.

you would think that they would have ability to configure default settings so entering apts would be easier.

like   1) configurable default time with new entry. (where minustes are actually 00. not 57 or some odd number)

          2) configurable defualt alert time rather than always 10 minutes.

3) this one bits me ... they need to automatically set the stop time 1 hr (or 30 min) from the time entered on a new entry so you dont have to actually set the stop time each and every time you enter an apt.  such a pain.

Re: Top Instinct Disappointments

1.  Sprint un-classifying the phone as a multimedia device.

2.  OWA E-mail password issues.  This is by far my number 1 gripe.

3.  Sub par music player, no album art unless you buy songs, horrible shuffle feature = me still using my ipod.

4.  Lack of any type of worth while application.

5.  Then when there is some sort of an application I want from the digital lounge paid per month apps?  Ebay app 3.99 per month?  MyCast Weather?  Come on now.

6.  MR-6 messing things up and still not fixed yet.

7.  Sub par web browser.

Ill say this, if MR-7 does not align my instinct with the new features of the instinct HD i.e. titan I'm done with this phone.

Re: Top Instinct Disappointments

My biggest disappointment is that Sprint, after one year, still needs to fix some things, but hasn't.

Placing ads in the handmark apps over fixing the calculator errors, among other things, shows clear lack of caring.

Re: Top Instinct Disappointments

Where do I begin? Well, that's relatively easy.

1. The browser! How can you even market a phone and dub it in commericials as an "iPhone Killer" when this phone couldn't browse the broadside of a barn? The browser is a complete and utter farce. Websites as old as Supersite for Windows don't render at all. This browser memory error makes you want to chuck the phone like Russell Crowe! Epic fail. Don't even try to fix this. Just go with Opera, as much as I dislike Opera, and dump this browser completely, IMO.

2. The Apps. What apps? We're still waiting. While the IM clients are nice, they don't go far enough. Facebook has a problem rendering accurately. However, some of the best things never made it here. Audible, Kindle, eBay, Amazon, etc. The games are laughable at best. All that state of staleness of apps is thanks to the initial $5000 downpayment. Who in the heck is Sprint kidding? No wonder the App Store is killing them.

3. The Calender - Feels so counterintuitive and doesn't work very easy. This needs to be rewritten from scratch period.

4. Media Player - It was glitchy as heck when I first bought the phone. Then they allow some random error to limit songs? That's sad when the much smaller iPod shuffle and Nano does a much better job. Heck, even a Zune would be better. Samsung and Sprint should have figured a way to play protected media off the bat. Second, an equalizer should have been an option. Third, a wireless song track identification and album art functionality should have been included on day one.

5. Email - Besides the problems for corporate users which is laughable because this should have been a no issue, the lack of controls is amazing. It doesn't download custom folders, doesn't allow to transfer to custom folders, and it doesn't render in HTML. Frankly, I've seen more functionality out of a Windows 3.11 machine in 2003 than the Instinct email application. Another complete rewrite is in order.

6. Lack of true Java functionality - J2ME is terrible. Sprint knows this and will fix this. However, they didn't do anything to get Java good enough to use on the web. This compounds the issue with the browser. I don't know if its a programming limitation or just very poor implementation. I'm going to say a little bit of both. However, you can't use their Java for anything. No chatting, other java uses, and the solutions out there just aren't good enough.

7. Screen lock - This was a no brainer. This should have been figured out with prototype testing. Either a hard key or proximity sensor should have been added. The fact that we still don't have it is crazy.

8. Wi-Fi - Its been a notion that we're becoming a wireless society for sometime now. This should have been done. I would have been happy with a basic wireless g reciever. This would have gotten the job done and saved many Instinct users some battery life.

9. No Extended battery - 5.75 hours is nothing. Granted there are 3rd party stuff, but why didn't Sprint and especially Samsung take the lead here. You knew as this phone got popular that 5.75 hours even with two batteries wouldn't cut it. For example: I'd be happy with an extended cell with 2 5.75 batteries together that alternate once one is drained. that would have easily been an 11.5 hour extended battery. Two of them would be a grand total of 23 hours. Any official extended life batteries here would be a tremendous improvement.

10. Camera - I have to break this critique down into two parts.

a.) Flash - Camera have been around for centuries. Flash photography has been in use from the mid 1800's. So why in the name of Eastman Kodak would you make a digital camera on a cell phone WITHOUT A FLASH?!?!?!?! That is just fundamentally, a very bad design flaw of many cell phones. However, Samsung makes digital cameras. How do you forget such an essential part of a camera?

b.) Editing tools - Digital photography goes back to 1961. A working digital camera prototype goes back to 1975. So in the day and age of Photoshop, how the heck can you have a digital camera without the means to edit? It doesn't have to be fancy. Some simple brightness controls, cropping, color editing, black and white image change, sepia tone, red eye removal, and zoom? Thats it. Nothing fancy.

11. Paying for PAM - Why? I know there's a hack, but I don't use it. We're paying for unlimited data. Why should I pay extra for a feature that shouldn't cost extra? Its a small protocol between the phone and computer. To me, the PAM should be a feature of the Simply Everything Plan. Especially that they've stripped the TV and radio services, that would be a great way to offset what we've lost.

12. Calculator - Calculators date back centuries, with the modern one being around 1820. Calculators in the portable electronic sense have been around since the early 1970's. So how come this almost basic function was botched on a device in the 21st century?

13. Stock Ticker - On many of my less powerful phones, a basic stock ticker was included. Why did this not come to the Instinct. I know of the More Solutions stock ticker and for those who want to pay for it, thats nice. But in the day and age of free apps, RSS feeds, and the Internet, why didn't this come with the phone?

Those are truely, my biggest gripes with the M800 Instinct. Fix these 13 problems and this phone would be truely excellent to use. Now I know I'm not an unreasonable or illogical person. Somethings such as flash and Wi-Fi can't be backported to the Instinct and the s30. However, I do hope that the Instinct HD and the Instinct Q both get these features. If not, then many of the pain of 1st and 2nd generation Instinct users has truely been in vain. That would be the biggest tragedy, learning nothing from the Instinct's faults and failures.

Re: Top Instinct Disappointments

1. Lack of cooperation with allowing 3rd parties to easily create apps from not unlocking the phone.  There are some very talented programmers that could make some wicked apps.

2. Lack of camera flash and image editing.

3. Lack of "personal customization" like changing the theme colors and whatnot.

4. Could use a more scientific calculator...although I do like the unit conversions, those rock!

5. Screen lock...still seems odd you can lock the screen when talking to *2 but no other calls.

Those are my main gripes about it.  Otherwise, it is still a nice phone with excellent call quality and does come stock with useful apps like the Navigation and Live Search.  Email client is good for me, havent had any real issues with it except there is an update for it and for some reason it gives me an error when trying to update.  As for PAM, it would be a nice free feature but realistically speaking...by running your pc from your phone's data you will be using ALOT more data than a phone would and if Sprint offered free PAM, everyone would be dropping their ISP and using it.  Therefore meaning the network will be bogged down, slow and super crappy.  Not an inconvenience I am willing to go through for free PAM as I want my phone to work fast on the internet when I need it to and not be slow due to everyone PAMming.  Besides cable and dsl are much faster anyways.

Although I am sure it will never happen...Windows Mobile will make this phone truely more of an "iphone killer" and would be the best enhancement, in my opinion anyways.

Re: Top Instinct Disappointments

My biggest disappointment lies more with Sprint than this phone. Their greedy, arrogant ways lead to false advertising, poor customer support, and almost zero development of apps.  SCREEN LOCK, nuff said  java 200 character limit!?!? OMG, can I personally shoot the rookie Sprint joke of a Development Team who made that?? Way to FORCE us to use your clunky stock browser.  The biggest disappointment was evident, but It took time for me to realize not only did Instinct not have an accelerometer, but that it lacks hardware everywhere else versus not just iPhone, but just about all touch screen phones...processor is puny, never could it run programs like iPhone, lack of capacitive screen, etc, etc. Some of these things like the screen and accelerometer were obvious to me when I got it, but I was naive enough to beleive their BS marketing and thought being able to watch tv like they show in the ads, "blazing Internet speeds" with the crappy browser, etc, would all eventually be fixed with just a quick update. I HELD ON TO THIS BRICK PAST MY 30 DAYS WAITING FOR AN UPDATE that would surely fix it, right? Sprint wouldn't sell me snake oil in hhis day and age, right?? WRONG!!!!

Re: Top Instinct Disappointments

At the risk of being wordy, this is the email i sent to Sprint of my complaints in roughly descending order:

Sprint Mobile Email / Sprint Mobile Email Work

There is limited OWA support. If all you can see is your Inbox and no messages sent from your phone show up in your sent items on your desktop, it borders on useless. Also, when composing any message of length (especially a reply with the previous text attached) the keyboard becomes slow and unresponsive. The lag is consistently about 0.5 seconds and can stretch. The fact that this is hyped as an email friendly device is my main point of contention that you are in breach of contract for failure to provide that which you claim. There is no mention of the limitations anywhere even now, a year later. I was duped into staying past my 30 day trial by promises of email upgrades. That occurred in December of last year and added document viewing capabilities – nice and also necessary, but this is not an “all your email on one device” device like you claim. I have to carry a second phone for work. That’s all I want to avoid. Also, how can images not show up in emails? I work in machine vision and cannot view any image that isn’t sent as an attachment. And my personal favorite huge shortcoming of the email services is that the emails from sprint that say “Click here. View on mobile device” don’t work. Nothing says attention to detail like your own communiqués not working.

Sprint Mobile Email Work Calendar

Make reminders work. Simply put, they don’t occasionally they work but only about 20% of the time. I missed a flight because of that once.

Handmark services

Hoooo boy. Where to start? Handmark services (news, sports, weather) are spotty and unreliable. News videos are rarely accessible. Nothing updates until you go to check so you always have to wait which is the last thing anyone spending over $100/month on a cell phone with data plan wants. The sports section doesn’t include vital stats like ties or points in hockey. And I haven’t had weather in over a month. I’ve had it, it’s been outside but my phone refuses to tell me about it. You point your finger at Handmark, but you are our provider. The buck stops with you.

Screen Lock (or lack thereof)

Screen lock. It is necessary. Period. The number one complained about shortcoming.

Browser

Your browser is too slow for constant use. Also, routing all web traffic through your servers so every thing is http://sprint09a.sprint.aopw... Doesn’t help anyone - nor does limiting access to certain sites. I pay for the internet, I want the whole thing. And since email has a PDF viewer, I think the browser should, too. This would be higher on my list if it weren’t for Opera. In newer versions like the S30, you included Opera, which is nice but then you don’t allow your virtual keyboard and there are character limits to entries, so even Opera isn’t ideal.

GPS Navigation

Update the street. I have several family members who have lived in areas between 2 and 7 years where their addresses cannot be used in navigation. Even if I save locations on my GPS at their houses, the navigation software can’t find it.

Video Playback

Your native video player isn’t bad, until its web based content. Then if you’re lucky enough to get it to play, you’re probably watching through a little yellow circle. Even YouTube. Seriously, did you not think people might use YouTube with this thing? You included a link.

Live Search by Microsoft®

Add the ability to sort. Also, expand the keywords for business names so stores with unique names but vague classifications are easier to use. I don’t know if I’ve gotten used to it or you’ve improved this function, but it seems better than a year ago, but it still needs work.

Sprint TV® Enabled

Add channels. Stop taking them away. That’s rude

Bluetooth® Enabled including Stereo BT profile

Make it audible. Seriously, the volume on BT is horrible. Same with Pandora, but that’s not your fault – it’s just aggravating

Visual Voicemail

Great idea. I just hate it when I get a voicemail a week after it was left (that only happened a couple of times though)

Sprint® Music Store

Remove the limit on number of songs. It’s ridiculous. Admittedly, it is also ridiculous to have more than 1280 (or however many it is) songs on your phone.

Customizable Favorites Menu

This is a pretty weak “customization”. It doesn’t get me mad, but it does many of your other customers.

Re: Top Instinct Disappointments

The phone is a flop and they have newer, flashier phones to sell. Unfortunatley, I think this is the way it is. The Hero (hopefully( will probably be what the Instinct should have been. But those of us without loads of cash will just have to stick with the Instinct until contract renewal time. I think the Instinct was the non-business touch phone 'beta' for Sprint.

My two biggest disappointments with the Instinct are - the lack of a properly implemented Java VM  (BIIIIIG DISAPOINTMENT, SPRINT ) and the keyboard, because typing on it is ridiculous.

Re: Top Instinct Disappointments

techtech actually covered my two top disappointments, in terms of specific features... and most of my other feature-oriented disappointments are covered well in other replies to this post.  Especially jogomez721's point #7 on lack of Screen Lock (hard key or proximity sensor), and point #8 on lack of Wi-Fi.

Looking at the forest, my top strategic disappointment is that Sprint rushed this phone to market, hyping it as a superior competitor to Apple's iPhone smartphone, and then never properly supported the handset.

  (1) Rush rush:  Sprint released the Instinct M800 on June 20, 2008  to leverage their "first 3G" claims a couple weeks before the iPhone 3G launched on July 11, 2008.

  (2) 4-cylinder Mustang:  Sprint knew the Instinct did not have the internal horsepower to handle the high demands of a real smartphone. The fact that Sprint backed away from classifying the Instinct as a smartphone is a "smoking gun" that they're  well aware of the Instinct's inherent limitations.

  (3) Lackluster development support:  Sprint never supported this phone to keep its users satisfied, even when a good number of the Instinct's issues were (and are) relatively easy  for developers to fix. The zero outcome of the 3rd party developer contest was an epic disappointment to every early adopter of the Instinct, and was at the time an ominous sign of things to come.

My instinct now is to not trust new phones from Sprint...they can rush all they want, but I will play wait and see.

Re: Top Instinct Disappointments

My biggest dissappointment is that Sprint out right lied to the developers involved in that 25,000 challenge. The reason for not giving out the prize money was that the software wasn't up to par for the Instinct!  I'll wait for the laughter to stop!

Re: Top Instinct Disappointments

I could not agree with you more on Sprint's attitude towards its customers.  9 years, four phones with them, and customer service isa joke!  Don't try to escalate to a decision maker, they accuse you of trying different folks to get the answer you want.

The phone is terrible for reasons others have noted.  I'm on my 2nd one in 6 months, took it in to have 3 issuesw addressed, they managed to get the update the other two, well not so much.  One issue is kinda important, when you drag to answer the call it was only working 50% of the time.  Repair got it up to 4 out of 5 that I can answer.

Glad I'm a "Premier" customer Mr Hesse, this phone is gone ASAP!

Re: Top Instinct Disappointments

I have to say the same thing, I was so hyped about getting the instinct. All of the Sprint employee's via phone and store hyped me up.. for what.. a HUGE disappointment. I am glad my contract is up next month.. I would love to stay with sprint, but I don't want to get trapped into another phone that is worse than a local carrier around here (metropcs). I think my instinct drops more calls than metropcs phone users. Anyone have any suggestions on maybe a newer phone ?
