Battery life on moment

Got the moment lastnight.  had 30% battery out of the box.  I ran it till it turned red and said less than 15% which was heavy usage for about 90 minutes.  Charged it all night, removed plug and it dropped to 90% within 2 minutes.  then sent 3 gtalk messages and it dropped to 80%.  turned on Bluetooth and made a 15 minute phone call and it dropped to 70%.

I am hoping that this is just a simple case of the battery needing to be conditioned for a few days but what have others seen so far?

Also, I have turned the screen brightness down, wifi off, gps off and BT only on when making 1 call so far.

Bring on 2.0, I REALLY miss the integration that Sensui had.  but thats another topic all together.

Re: Battery life on moment

Hey, I was just about to make a thread on this very subject. I was actually just trying to get a feel for battery life for another forum user when I noticed this as well. Pretty much exact same timing as you have found, though I find the rate of "drain" slows as it gets into lower percentages. I have made a post already on Androidforums.com, on this subject.

Re: Battery life on moment

Here's a tip I just received that should help with the battery issue.

  1. Press and hold the weather widget on the home screen drag to the trash can to throw it away
  2. You can then press and hold again on the home screen and select widgets.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and select the large weather widget
  4. Uncheck Follow current location.
  5. In the search bar at the top enter a zip code or city name and hit search icon to the right.
  6. Select OK

You may also want to set the location for the weather application.

To do this perform the following steps:

  1. Launch the application by pressing on the widget or the application from the program menu.
  2. With the application open press menu and add location.
  3. Click add a place.
  4. Enter a zip code or city name and hit search.
  5. Select your city and add the location.

Re: Battery life on moment

I got the Moment on Sunday and have played with it all day and yesterday.  Drained and recharged the battery as I thought was needed and today I've charged it fully and I'm in the process of seeing how long a 100% charged battery will last.

Here is what I'm doing with the phone.

Sitting at my desk all day.  At 10:30 CST it was 100% charged.  I disconnected it from the charger.

DroidLive streaming music through this entire process

Txt messaging as they arrive and respond

Leaving for lunch in a bit and will BT Stereo to my Sony head unit in my Truck for about 35 minutes.  Will continue to DroidLive so I can really impact the battery.  By the way, BT is turned off when I'm not near my truck.

WiFi off

GPS on

Using NewsRob every 30 minutes to pull Slashdot

Using email to check Gmail and my personal email at another site.

I'll browse the web here an there too.

When the phone alerts me that the battery is to low, I'll post the length of time it took.

Re: Battery life on moment

My battery is horrible. I have done the autobacklight thing and disabled the Weather app. I took it off the charger today at 730am at 100% and with light use it is at 15% as of now. Unacceptable. The phone is going back.

Re: Battery life on moment

I wanted to go bleeding edge and having had a pretty good run with Sprint's Instinct I took a leap of faith.  To the battery life topic I'd like to add that so far its been a total dissappointment.  I'm charging over USB and allowing the battery to warn low and even run to the point the phone dies.  I have however left the phone in pretty much a just out of the box state otherwise.  Not deleting anything and even increasing the time to dim to 2 minutes.  I have used it for calls, loaded a few standard apps like facebook and used gmail.  I'm going to charge the phone from an AC source tonight for at least 8-10 hours and see what the life is like.

As for the experience of adding a new line.

My girl had a sleek little ATT LG phone that she like but she was tired of not having texting without the repeat pecking of keys.  I embraced this and made her an offer.  I'd add her to my plan, give her my brand new Instinct after purchasing the Moment.

The result a complete waste of time.

The moment got 20% of my contacts and the rest are missing. The rep reset my phone after he said he completed the transfer as part of the prep to move my girl onto the Instinct.  My chat today with support went something like this.

She was not properly activated and this required  4 calls in excess of 1 hour each call (multiple transfers and rediculously poor support.)  Escalations to managers who didn't speak in clear completed sentences and were powerless to help.  PORTING ESCALATIONS are 3-4 days at a critical level.  Simply unacceptable.

She went 18 hours with no ATT or Sprint service while we traveling apart... (sounds silly but we asked before taking the risk and we were assured we would be active in less then one hour.

I guess its pointless to go ranting.. I guess my point is.. the support has fallen off and for such an expenive device. Adding new a customer that I pryed from AT&T only to get excuses.

I'm thinking I should have looked harder at the HTC.  Just made a call after battery showed half green.. Talked 1 minute phone is back to yellow bar again.. I'm starting to see a trend here.

Re: Battery life on moment

I made it until 4:00 PM CST on one charge.  So 5 1/2 hours.

GPS on

BT on for 1.25 hours

Ran DroidLive, Orb, and SD Card MP3's on Music Player nonstop.

SMS quite a bit

Set up for the first time Exchange ActiveSync with work and synced up Moxier. Calendar is all full. To many meetings.

Got work emails all during this...Direct Push

Got personal emails on my IMAP server...checking every 15 minutes

Got personal emails from Gmail...checking at default. Can't remember if that's hourly.

Surfed the web a lot

Read NewsRob news from Slashdot

Showed off my Moment

Visited the Market and downloaded and installed a few apps

Played with new App

BT Audio'd for 45 minutes in my truck at lunch using DroidLive and MP3's

BT Audio'd going home for 30 minutes and right when I got home it was 4:00 PM and the phone beeped with an error message saying battery to low. Charge now.

The screen was on a lot and I haven't adjusted dimmers or anything.

I'd say 5 1/2 hours of this kind of abuse is pretty freakin' good.

Re: Battery life on moment

I'd agree that your run was much better.  I visited a Sprint store this evening on my way home.  They told me to visit the corp store a few miles away tomorrow and they would check to see if I landed a dud battery.  I have it hooked up to the AC and I am charging now starting at 7:00PM EST.  Let's see what happens I guess I should try to remain optimistic.

Re: Battery life on moment

I agree about the battery life not being good at all.  I realize I've only had the phone for a day now but if I have to plug it in twice during the day to keep it from dying thats nuts.  I've only made a few minutes of calls on it.  I've mostly sent text messages, configured Moxier mail for work email and I really don't get much that much email and I also played with the gps app for a bit today.  Now, even after connecting it up via usb to try to transfer some music on it, its back down to 15%.  Insane.  My girlfriend got a Hero and I'm starting to think that is a better choice since the battery is better but it still isn't really that good.

I see myself returning this puppy in the next few days.

Re: Battery life on moment

i'm also having the exact same problem.  i've tried to uninstall the weather channel app but uninstall button is not availble for this app.  i'm also having problem with the location service where my current location cannot be determined in Google Maps.  both Gps and wireless network settings are enabled but still cannot locate my current position.  i'm starting to think this is why the weather channel app is endlessly looking for my current location causing the battery to drain prematurely???

Re: Battery life on moment

I got the Moment yesterday and battery life isn’t terrible but I was expecting more. I am still tweaking it but at least I am able to get a few hours of battery life.

I followed SarahKS post about maximizing battery life but had a few questions and thought it would be best to post here:

1. Is there a way to tell it to sync google application (specially gmail) at a certain interval? For example I have exchange/moxier syncing every 5 minutes.I know I can turn off auto but I don't like having to manually refresh it.

2. Does turning off the background data option help at all?

3. Is there an option to get a third party larger battery?

Re: Battery life on moment

My weather app is working but it does make me think of what kind of drain GPS services have on the phone while in an office building all day.  I know my Garmin Nuvi can only run on its internal battery for 3-5 hours so if this thing has GPS on all the time, no doubt the battery life is going to suffer.  I couldn't get a good gps lock on in my house just now so I went outside and bang, got a lock right away.
