Major Android dilema

I'm able to upgrade my phone next month and I want to get an android phone.  I narrowed it down to two decisions, the HTC Hero and the Samsung Moment.  Which one is better?

Re: Major Android dilema

If you are a patient person then hold off until the next wave of phones are released. The next wave should have a faster processor and an updated OS. If you can not wait then go to the Sprint store and play with them to compare. Check out the specs and decide what features that work best for you. The biggest being the keyboard.

Re: Major Android dilema

If you can't wait for an Android 2.0 phone with a faster processor, then I can recommend the Samsung Moment.  Both have 1.5 Android.  I returned my HTC Hero.  It was great for personal use but not so great for personal and business use.

The Sense UI on the HTC is a nice feature but not a deal breaker for me.  The faster processor on the Samsung makes a noticeable difference.  And, finally, I am able to wirelessly sync my personal and my work email with two different applications.

I use standard Android mail for personal.  I use "work email" for outlook exchange sync which so far has performed flawlessly with web outlook.  It syncs my email and my calendar perfectly.

As a former iPhone user, I would consider the Samsung a closer multi-purpose (personal & business) device than the HTC Hero.

I went to the store yesterday to checkout the Moment as well, since I was not happy with the slow performance of the Hero. However after I saw the cheap plastic build quality of the Moment I was immediately turned off. I instead decided to keep the Hero and then later on in 2010 when the over 1ghz snapdragon phones it, to upgrade then.

I wirelessly sync both work exchange and personal gmail with the Hero. It sounds like you had problems with this on the Hero?

I felt that same way about the model on display.  But, the phone that I bought feels much more solid that the display unit.  Of course, nothing like the HTC (1 piece vs. 2 piece).

I was never able to get my Corporate email to sync on HTC.  When I got back to the office today, I loaded the settings in a Samsung widget named "Work Email" and it worked the first time.  I didn't see such a widget on the HTC.  Perhaps it exists on the marketplace website.  Not sure.

When you get the Snapdragon, you will be so pleased with the speed of Android.  The 800MHz processor with 1.5 totally dimenishes any lag or latency that I saw on the HTC.

One of the biggest issues that I had with the Hero was that **** keyboard.  After 3 weeks, I simply could not master it.  I aimed for "U" and got "J".  So, the Moment's slide out keyboard is a nice and roomy convenience for me.

Re: Major Android dilema

I have come to find out that the snapdragon is not going to have a 1ghz processor but a 768mhz...it was clocked and recorded...oh and I have the moment...I have been a fan of android since their debut...and the moment is and will be the strongest android to date...their mite be stronger and better in the future but for now moment it is...my only problem with the sprint version of android is the lack of software support...we are on 1.5 when every one else is on 1.6 with the up and coming release of 2.0.

Re: Major Android dilema

jwill,

What Sprint has confirmed is that there will be "Updates" for both the Hero and the Moment at some undisclosed time in the future.

That could be 1.6, 2.0, or 2.1... But that is NOT saying that 2.1 won't be out by the time the 2.0 is released, or 2.5, or 3.0...

What HTC has confirmed is that they are skipping 1.6 and are working on porting the Sense UI to Android 2.0 and will be released Android 2.0 for the Hero.  (Since they were talking Sense UI, that leads most to believe they are talking about the Sprint Hero, as the European Hero did not come with Sense UI.)

Again, this *could* be 5 months from now, when Android 2.5 or 2.6 is available on other platforms, we just don't know...  Unless confirmed directlly by a company, assume the worst.

Re: Major Android dilema

I had the Samsung Instinct original.  It was like a tornado, it sucked and blew at the same time.  I got the Moment on the 1st and all I can say is WOW!  This is what the Instinct dreams of being.  I've extensively played with the iPhone, G1, and owned the Instinct.  I will never go back to virtual keyboards ever again.  I had a Treo 650 before the Instinct and after about 3 months I was contemplating going back to the 650 but the dialup speed was not worth it so I suffered through the vkeyboard.

Updates to OS are not that important to me.  What I want is a stable, snappy phone with the ability to upgrade down the road.  So many bleeding-edge toys fail to deliver due to the rush-to-market need.  I've been in corporate IT since 1989 and I can tell you that rushing anything will turn out to bite you.

But in the end it all comes down to what you, as a consumer likes.  Read, test, get opinions like this from anyone and everyone and decide.

Enjoy the Moment! (pun intended)

Re: Major Android dilema

I have read on phonedog.com and droiddog.com that the HTC Dragon may actually be coming to market before the end of the year.  Much larger screen and faster processor.  Is there anything that we can do to get Sprint to offer that phone?  It would be the bomb and seems like if Sprint could put together a great marketing scheme for their premier handset that was able to compete or better yet beat the IPhone and Droid that they could start to regain their customer base.

I know I have noticed that customer service has improved vastly over the past two years and their plan offerings are GREAT.  combine that with first class handsets and we (sprint) could turn around the losses we have seen over the past couple of years.

Bring us the dragon!

Actually the European HTC Hero was the phone to debut Sense UI.  Either way it doesnt matter, even if HTC does the euro version first, they are the same phone both running sense.  Only difference is gsm/cdma and some sprint software.  So once HTC gets dones shouldnt take sprint too long to release it.
