Um...what image did you flash? I and tried Amon-RA's image and the phone hung at HTC when trying to boot into recovery so I pulled the battery and rebooted normally. Still no root for me.

Been watching this thread via gmail all morning. Some questions come to mind.
1. How will rooting our sprint heros effect them once HTC releases a 2.0 update?
2. Given that root can be attained... where is the documentation on how to do so?
3. Once root has been gained, what is to stop anyone from loading 2.0 on their phone?
Not a linux noob by any strech, but sprint hero is my first android phone.
@shdobxr
I don't think anybody has actually rooted the Hero yet. All we are able to do is load a recovery image (which is the first step to loading a custom ROM).
As of yet, the recovery images out there don't work on this Hero so we have to wait another couple of days. Once we have a good recovery image, we can then load a custom ROM (again, no custom ROM out there yet so more waiting).
As far as HTC Update - I would assume that taking an OTA firmware would replace the custom ROM on the phone and patch any holes that are currently being exploited.
As far as loading 2.0 - I don't think there's anything stopping us from doing that once we get the recovery image working. However, (good or bad) some stuff won't work on 2.0 yet like the HTC SenseUI, and a lot of apps in the market.
Yes I have rooted my hero as have a few others... their are no custom roms yet but its the first step... I personally removed that nasty sprint start up logo and fixed the TCP issue so my wifi would work which you can only do if you have root.

What if I want to Root the phone just so I can uninstall sprint apps and use wifi-tethering. Everything I've researched so far seems to always talk about loading custom ROMS, when I just want to leave the phone as is, have root access.
My apologies if I'm not understanding things properly.

Would you be willing to elaborate on the steps you took that made for a successful root? I would also like to see the nasty sprint start up logo go away.
@jmanley
Yep just read up on the forums on xda. Relinking a thread about custom ROMS here just for giggles.

Thanks for the clarification. Hope someone raises their hand that they are working on a custom ROM... either Amon or Cyan.

Its in boot_animation.xml in /system/media/bootscreen
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
then you can edit.

You will need busy box since cp is not in the firmware.
