My toshiba (Vista) is no longer detecting my Compass 597 broadband USB modem. I have uninstalled all updates that happened in the few days prior to the stoppage, stopped any further updates, uninstalled smartview, reinstalled smartview, went to sierra for drivers, everything I can think of. I'm not exactly the most computer literate person, but, it shouldnt be this difficult. The enable broadband is grayed out on the menu. I tried to download the update from Sprint, but, am not in an area with active wifi, so, I dont get a good connection or, one that lasts long enough. I'm really getting annoyed as my only reliable connection is (was) the stupid broadband & it hasnt worked since 10/18. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok. First think I would check, is device manager. Close down the SmartView programs. (Click start - type "device" in the search blank without hitting enter - select "device manager" from the list) On this list, look under modems and make sure that Sierra Compass 597 is a valid modem choice. After verifying this, click start - network "network and sharing center". On the far left-hand side, choose "change adapter settings". Inside the window that opens up, you should have a few dial-up connections. Find "CDMA" & "3g". If you don't have the "3g" connection it's ok. Right click on both of these connections one at a time and select properties. Under the first tab that pulls up, you should have a list of modems here. Make sure the Sierra Wirless Compass 597 modem is the only modem checked - if not, uncheck all others. Do the same for the other connection.
Open smartview and see if it shows up. Let me know if this clears it. If not, send a msg back and we'll look into another possible cause.
Thanks!
