An example of how the Hero's lag SCREWED me over today.

Look. I want to like the Hero, I really do. I've always tried to put its shortcomings aside and just constantly remind myself that "there is no such thing as a perfect phone" and "sure, the Hero is not as fast as the iPhone but look at all it can do that the iPhone can't" and I could go on. But when it comes to a question of the phone's functionality, it becomes a problem.

Today, I was listening to music on the Hero via the Music app at about 80% volume while walking to a meeting. As I was entering the main doors of the building, the music started to skip and then just stopped playing. At first I just thought it was a big lag and that it would catch up in a few seconds. When it didn't, I proceeded to try to wake the phone via the menu/end button to see whats going on. No response. Screen would not turn on. Did the phone turn off? Did it run out of batteries? No, couldnt have - it was fully charged a second ago, plus, never saw a low-battery notification. Then alas - screen turned on, and went immediately to a phonecall-receving screen. It turned out that the reason for all this nonsense was that I was recieving a call. So, of course, the music hadn't started playing since it stopped earlier. So I took out the headphones preparing to answer the phone while walking to a talk-friendly area in the building. What happens? The phonecall hangs up. Guess it was ringing on the other side of the line all the while my phone was lagging and stuff. So I was like whatever, I'll call them back later. THEN what happens? The music that was playing earlier, while my heaphons were in, resumed... without my headphones in. Music was loud. And not only that, my Hero did me a favor by freezing up again, not allowing me to pause OR lower the volume of the music. So here I am, standing in the middle of the meeting hall, with my phone blasting music at about 80% volume (still very loud through the speakers) fidgeting with the phone trying to get it to stop playing the music, while everyone in the meeting hall just stares. After about a whole MINUTE (no exaggeration) of trying to unfreeze, press the pause button, and trying to lower the volume with the rocker volume, my phone finally caught up with the lag and began lowering the volume by itself (but it was still playing, just at 0 volume). Finally the phone unfroze and I was able to press the pause button.

There was no mirror around, but I bet my face was as red as a cherry. I suppose I could have just taken the headphones out of my pocket that I put in there while trying to answer the call, but when something like this happens in a quiet meeting hall and everyone is staring, that just didn't occur to me. At that very instant, I was *THIS CLOSE* to chunking my Hero onto a brick wall. No joke. But then I would have no phone. So I didn't.

Look. I have experienced lags and slowdowns before while just using different apps, or browising the internet, or other things. But like I said earlier, I just set those aside and tried to build some patience and tolerance for the Hero. But after this little incident, all of that is just out the window.

Boy do I hope this next MR takes care of this whole "recieving a call while doing something" business, I have heard of other people having problems when recievng calls while doing something else. Or is this hope just too farfetched for our beloved Hero?

Re: An example of how the Hero's lag SCREWED me over today.

Welcome to the club. I have missed 3 calls today becuase the phone vibrates, and there is no caller ID or answer button. The screen is blank. One call was very important, and luckily, I have a failsafe - My Pager. Yup, I still cary one. It does one thing and does it well.

Rumor is at customer care that on 11/18 (tomorrow) there will be an update. However, before I have a nervous breakdown dealing with all the bugs in the software, i'm switching back to blackberry tonight. I really really don't want too. However,  In a critical situation where I need to use my phone or to recieve an emergency call, and I only have one shot at taking that call,  i'm never sure if it will work. Will the phone hang? Will the phone Ring?? Will the phone Lockup?? Will I recieve that text??? Could you imagine your phone lagging on a 911 call because some simple app has messed with the 911 button?? I doubt this would happen, but with all the bugs I wouldn't be suprised.  Sprint is a reliable network. And I need a reliable, and dependable phone on Sprint's network. I promise I will give the android another shot down the road.

Best Regards

My phone works great. The only issue I have is the time widget not showing the correct time and my battery doesn't last as long as it should, even though I'm only at 31% awake over 140 hours. I have none of the lag issues that you guys have. My previous Hero did all of the things you guys are pointing out, also I could press an icon and several seconds later it would change colors then open. I took that phone back and the new one is ace.

I hope the coming "fix" doesn't ***** up more than it fixes. I'd hate for my great functioning Hero to go to sh*t...

Re: An example of how the Hero's lag SCREWED me over today.

I hadn't experienced the ring lag problem, at least that I was aware of, but I'm pretty sure I did today. The phone rang once and quit before I could get it out of my pocket. It was an 866 number and they didn't leave a message, and I actually laughed out loud when I Googled the number to see if I could determine who called.

It was Sprint Customer Service.

They always seem to call whenever I change phones or plans to see if I'm satisfied and attempt to talk me into another line for a family member ... and I'm pretty sure that's what the call was about. And I'm actually a little bummed that I didn't get the opportunity to 'splain that the phone would be going back for a refund if I was still being forced to live with the known bugs on the day before my 30-day return period was up.

But the ring delay apparently ate the call.

Re: An example of how the Hero's lag SCREWED me over today.

I've noticed that a lot of aftermarket apps can introduce serious lag. ShopSavvy was one of the worst for me. Handcent is another.

Run a Task killer to view all the third-party apps that start up after you boot the phone. Make a little list. Then go uninstall all of them (yes, all of them). Then uninstall all the ones that do things automatically, like when you receive a message or when you go to a certain place or when you plug the phone in. Every one of them.

Use the phone for a few days and compare the lag. I got rid of some of these types of apps and it made an enormous difference. I uninstalled just four apps (ShopSavvy, Handcent, MyBackup Pro, and The Weather Channel) and the difference has been staggering.

I wonder if there just wasn't a "bad batch" of heros distributed to certain areas? My Hero works great, and I've heard the same from many others. Aside from the minor known issues that I corrected using the known fixes.... Its fine. Never missed a call or text and I trust the phone completely. It just seems odd that there's such a disparity among hero owners and reports of some phones having so many problems that they are deemed unusable by their owners. It would be interesting to note what parts of the country people with "problem heros" are from, along with manufacture dates...just to see if there's a pattern.

Has anyone pointed out that perhaps its a Network/System Issue rather then a phone issue? I've had my phone lockup a couple times and that was definitely an issue internal to the phone... BUT, if I had problems receiving phone calls and text messages over FOUR phones I would begin to think there were tower issues in my area... Have you checked with Sprint Support in regards to Systems Issues?

Now, these apps that you listed, were you assuming that we use those apps? For example, I have ShopSavvy on my phone, but I like never use it. Could it possible be a reason for all the slowdowns like the ones during phonecalls that I have been experiencing?

The only one I've tested individually is ShopSavvy. For whatever reason, when it's installed on my phone it gets much laggier. I uninstalled the ones I listed, which seemed to be some of the busiest, and the phone got much faster. It's about as fast as it is after a factory reset even though I have about 50 other apps installed.

I don't know if each one of them is bad, though.

I'm also not assuming anyone is using those apps or blaming the lag on any of those apps. I DO, however, think that most of the ring lag and so forth we're all experiencing is due to third-party apps. I think that the OS should be designed so that doesn't happen, but given reports of 1.6 and 2.0 being mostly lag-free I think that's exactly what Google did after 1.5.

So all said I think that once we get a real OS update the lag will largely disappear... but until then start dropping the heavy, busy third-party apps and see if that improves things for you.

Yea, I'm on my second Hero. The first one wasn't horrible, but I did notice some lag. My Yahoo email would sometimes give me a login error and I would have to cycle the phone down and it would work for a few days and repeat that same error. The battery was good with the Handcent fix. What made me turn it in was the green answer button peeled "off" showing the full green led light. Meaning that the brushed metal is like a really stuck on sticker more or less... Weird. I haven't heard of anyone else having that problem. Anyways, now this new Hero works like a charm! No lag, no Yahoo email login error, but the battery is horrible even with the same Handcent fix! I fly through the battery within 5-6 hours. This morning I had a full green bar, I came back to my desk for lunch and it's flashing red! I will note, I bought my Hero on the first release date (10/9) and it didn't have w/ Google. My new Hero has w/ Google technically (I kept the old battery cover, lol. Don't want Google on the back of my phone.)...

Hey Jonnythan

thanks so much for doing the research.  After I uninstalled Shopsavvy and weather channel (I'm assuming it was shopsavvy that did it); my Hero is MUCH faster.  No lag, it is just as it was on day one.

Something seems up with ShopSavvy.  Anyone else experiencing major lag between programs, screens, answering the phone, etc. should try to uninstall that app and see what happens.
