I know I've seen this. But I can't find it (or I'm lazy).
Anyway, if you have a Hero, and cannot get it to connect to your WiFi router, please post in this thread. Please list the exact make and model of your WiFi router.
(need some evidence of a known TCP stack bug to push out to HTC to ensure a fix...)
Thanks,
Will
Well I have already done some of the homework and contacted Sprint, HTC and Google and opened a bug on the android tracker.
http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=linux+2.6.27+tcp+issue&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
This is in fact an issue in the 2.6.27 kernel shipping with the Android 1.5 OS.
I have my WIFI AP's separated from my router. I have an Xincom X16 load balancing four 6mbit DSL connections from AT&T. Works with every other item in my house but my HTC Hero. After digging for 3 days solid I found the issue was a regression in the 2.6.27 kernel. The key here is to find out what ISP's people are using and if they are connecting via PPPoE also.
I think this is a critical issue and should be resolved quickly.
Here is the commit to the android kernel
And here is one fix that Gentoo did and was commied back to 2.6.28
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=242634
here is the ticket I opened up on the tracker for android.

I have been having with connecting my HTC hero to wifi at home but no where else. It doesn't even find my network, even though the very computer I sit and type on right now is connected wirelessly to the same router. It's a NETGEAR WNR-2000. Any ideas of what to try?
my router is an att/2wire 2701HG-B
my first hero had NO PROBLEMS whatsoever with wireless
but, got dust under the screen (a lot) so i returned it - now my second hero has *intermittent* (at best) connectivity -- same router!
at first, couldn't connect at all - now, i get on sometimes, sometimes i don't
like, yesterday - couldn't get on at all... today, first thing this morning i was connected
?!?!?
is it ME?? am i just going CRAZY??
i rent so i can't just go wild experimenting/changing the router settings (WPA2.. then WEP.. then no security, b/g mode, g-only.. etc) -- i want to, but i there's nooooo wayyyyy i'm gonna tick everybody else off just trying to get my lil cell phone to work
: (((
what do you know about WPA vs WEP interfering with HTC Hero wifi connectivity? I'd be interested in that answer. I'm currently using the WPA/WEP security but haven't tried changing yet?
I have a Linksys WRT110 router and my network is not showing up now. It was working before the update.
Ok.. so I solved my problem.. Apparently, I had WPA/WEP security and for whatever reason it wouldn't work but as soon as I changed to only WEP or WPA it worked great. The wireless connection couldn't find my wireless signal until I made the change. FYI.
EVERYONE WHO HAS A HTC PHONE AND A WIRELESS N ROUTER PLEASE READ;
After spending about 3 hours on the phone with Sprint and HTC we have found the answer. HTC is not currently compatible with any Wireless-N routers. If you have a Wireless-N Router, you will need to log in to your router and change your broadcast signal to B only, G only, or B/G Mixed. As soon as I did that my Hero was able to see my wireless router.
My Hero WiFi connectivity experience is a little different. I have a DLink DIR-655 802.11n wireless router which is setup to broadcast mixed G & N wireless networks and I have the Hero connecting fine with all my other N computers connecting at 300mbps.
However, I do have some unique settings on the DLink wireless router because I noticed that the Hero wasn't at all stable using WPA2 mode with my DLink router. So, since the Hero only saw WPA2 being broadcast, I set my DLink router's secondary Guest zone wireless SSID to broadcast WPA only and the Hero connects fine on the Guest zone wireless SSID while the router is hosting all my other wireless N clients on the main SSID in WPA2 mode with its one wireless G & N transmitter. BTW, the Guest zone wireless SSID settings does not have a setting for the 802.11 mode transmitter or the channel frequency since it only has one transmitter which is setup on the main wireless settings to broadcast mixed G & N on a single channel. Also, I can even connect 802.11n clients on the Guest zone wireless SSID in WPA only mode without a problem with the Hero WiFi, but I'd rather keep them in WPA2 on the main SSID. So, for now the Hero is the only client using the Guest zone wireless SSID with the WPA only mode set.

I got a new D-link wireless N router (DIR-625) for Christmas in coordination with a new laptop. Setup was simple (WPA security) and my Hero immediately recognized the new network. I put in my pw and now everytime I am back in the house the phone rolls over to the network connection. The only wierd thing I have found is that The Weather Channel/USA Today apps will not update while I am connected to the home network. Strange..
My router is an att/2wire 2701HG-B
The first time I did not have any trouble connecting.
After 2 weeks the phone would not connect.
I hard reset the phone and problem solved
I have a Belkin F5D8233-4 that broadcasts in N,G, and B.
SSID:
Wireless Channel: 6
Extension Channel: 2
Wireless Mode: 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n
Bandwidth: 20/40 MHz
Secuirty Tab:
Security Mode: WPA\WPA2-Personal (PSK)
Authentication: WPA-PSK
Encryption Technique: AES
Since Day one my Hero has been able to see and connect to this router, however, it rarely works even though the phone says im connected I can not browse the web or use any apps that require the internet connection. Some days I connect and it works fine (for only about 10 minutes) or it doesnt work at all.
There are many other devices that work great on this router (ie.. ipod touch, iphone, and Blackberry). Is there something that I am not doing right with the hero.
Also my wireless router is used as an access point only. (it is wired into anthoer router, so there is no firewall on the wireless router also it does not give out the ip addresses.)
Zyxel NBG-415N
802.11 mode: mixed g and b
channel width: auto 20/40 MHz
Security mode: WPA-personal
WPA mode: Auto WPA or WPA2
I dont know if this is the same problem. I see my Hero's MAC on the router, but it doesnt have an IP address. Almost like its connecting on the network but just not able to complete the DHCP handshake.
