Buying an outside smartphone and keeping non data plan?

My husband and I both have Palm Treo. He has the 650 and I the 755p. Both are on the fritz as we've had them for about 3 years. We are eligible for upgrades, and would love to have another Treo. We had a non data plan and were told that if we upgrade to a smartphone we would have to get a data plan. We don't need or want a data plan. Can we buy an outside smartphone (unlocked) that is Sprint compatible and switch our numbers to it instead? Thanks

You should be able to pick up new or used phones of the same model and call or visit sprint and have them swap them out. Try craigslist or ebay and depending on how old the phone is you might be able to pick them up cheap. If you purchased insurance (the $7 per month thing) they should fix them or swap them out for free.

You might call Sprint to confirm there isn't a charge to activate the new (used) phone.

Good luck.

If you bought replacement treos then you can put them on your plan without adding data. If you were to buy newer phones such as: HTC Hero, Samsung Moment, Samsung Instinct (in any model), Palm Pre or Pixi, any Blackberry, then you do need to have a data plan.

Actually, I just tried to buy online a new Palm Treo.  Guess what?  I was FORCED into one of the Everything Data plans.  Since when is a Treo so data centric?  I know that the Palm Pre and Palm Pixie are...but give me a break.

Seems like no matter what PDA or Smartphone you buy, you're going to be forced into adopting a data plan, whether you want to or not.  At least that's what it's saying to me on the website.

Re: Buying an outside smartphone and keeping non data plan?

Quasi 2 things could be happening there...

1. You are a Nextel user on a plan prior to the Talk/EM/ED plans, those were the first plans offered that allowed going back and forth between iDEN and CDMA devices in the billing system, in addition to mix and matching phones on the same sharing plan. So if you went through it as an upgrade it would see you are not on a CDMA compatible plan and would have you switch.

2. You were setting up a new account in which case a data plan is required for the smartphones anyway, and those are the currently offered ones.

So what is this another way Sprint kicks Nextel customers to the curb? So because he picked a CDMA phone (regardless of model) he would have to change his plan to the current Talk/EM/ED.

****, no wonder people are running from this company if they have Nextel!

It has been 5 years since the merger and we are on Nextel's billing system now, I might add. So this makes Sprint look even more foolish. Computers can be made to do anything you want them to do, so blaming the billing system is not going to cut it. Proper blame goes to the IT apps department.
