The display Hero in my local Sprint store had paint missing on the Phone Button and End Button... LOOOOL!! It looked like a blob of green for the Phone Button and a blob of red for the End Button

I have had mine for about a month - it was a replacement - and all the paint seemed to have come off in one day on the end key...
I bought my HTC Hero with Google back on Nov 19th and it took only a month to start chipping...i called sprint and they said it was all cosmetic and that it would not be covered under warranty....anybody else have better luck trying to get this issue solved?
I actually tried replacing this myself (my Hero looks exactly like the pic on the first page) but both the Talk and End buttons are connected to the faceplate; no way to replace but by swapping out the entire front, or risk removing the button permanently. There is a plastic rod that the actual button goes through, this was melted down to prevent the button from falling out, I guess. One design flaw directly followed by another one.
I have a pre-release, non-Google branded.

Mine is doing this too.. I bought mine in nov.. but let's just say-- NOT the biggest fan of the device having come from an iphone.. Sprint internet used to seem fast on my treo 650.. but the iphone surfs better on tmobile edge than hero on sprint... boo.. I'd actually not mind so much if the flash they promised me really worked for something other than advertisements..
bah...
I was just preparing to sell this thing and I noticed this peeling.. i have a total of maybe.. MAYBE 5 hours of holding this thing in my hand.. REALLY this is just the cherry on top for my dislike of the quality of this phone. Mine hasn't flaked off, just lifted.. crossing my fingers i can glue it down..
Just talked to customer service, they found a known issue with the device under something like, "power button paint chip," apparently they are aware of the issue and are working on a solution.
That's be great if they found a way to fix it - I wonder how though - without sending it in... Once they did, I'd probably sell it, this phone requires way too much babysitting, on top of this, my end key feels like sandpaper... Funny, when I had my blackberry, it took care of me - wtih the Hero (six months into it) its the other way around... Granted, it is more fun..
Another one bites the dust... Part of my back arrow button peeled off yesterday. Just like most, I am very frustrated that this is happening after only few months old. I love the phone, I love the Android OS. After seeing post like this and seeing how may people are having the same issue, there is no way that Sprint can claim that this is only cosmetic. This is a product defect. Sprint needs to openly acknowledge this as an issue and do something about it. I just hope it's the right thing.
Yout want Sprint to replace your phone, call them up and tell them you're having a Ring lag problem or you're having touchpad lag, they'll have you reset the device once and then say "it must be a hardware problem" and swap your phone out.
You need to know how to approach the problem with them.
Of course if Sprint and HTC actually listened to their customers and looked into the bugs that people are complaining about then they won't swap the phone out for a software issue instead they'd FIX THE F*#@&#@* PROBLEMS!

Well, I don't really think that will solve the problem, Time_Lord. If you actually go through the process of making a warranty claim, they can charge you if they fail to find the defects you claim are on your phone. It's in clear writing on the return info they send you. Of course, if you are willing to pay $75 just for being dishonest, they by all means. I spoke to HTC about this issue as well, they have had a number of complaints about the paint problems but generally will not guarantee they will fix it because it is solely a "cosmetic" issue and doesn't affect the phone's functionality. I was quoted $140 for repair from them, if they found it to be only cosmetic or if the warranty was voided by, say, tampering with the housing and breaking the seal on the housing screws or messing with the default software. They did say I had a chance at a free repair, covered under warranty, but it sounded like it was up to the discretion of the tech. You are far better off requesting a warranty exchange due to the defective paint, like I said earlier it is a known issue. I myself am going to put some clear nail polish on the new one to prevent this from happening again.
Dishonest? not really you'll find a problem on the phone that's a software issue, either ring lag or touchpad lag, bluetooth issues, sms etc, Sprint's techs will walk you though, resetting the phone or something similar which will solve the problem for a few days at which point you call back a second time and they'll simply replace the phone thinking "it must be a hardware problem because we don't know of any software issues like that" oh save yourself some time, tell them that you've already reset the phone twice and the problem returned.
Done, you have a new phone, they've replaced mine 4 times so far for those reasons. I never had the paint chipping problems or the dust problems and have never been charged the $75 fee. Even if I was charged the $75 fee I would simply tell Sprint that it was their tech that chose to replace it based upon my problem description not my idea.
Oh, for the 3nd replacement I went into the store after having Sprint support open a ticket for me (don't remember what it was called) saw the tech, told him what was happening, his response "yeah I have the same problems with mine and there is nothing I can do but swap the phone, you'll receive a replacement in a couple of days, have a nice day"
Sprint- This is wonderful support isn't it? You should be able to do much better and FIX THE PHONE!!!! Then again overnight shipping is $15 to $20 a shot? Keep spending money see if I care!

Yup, mine came off on a replacement after a month... The one it replaced had a dust issue among other things... This one has no dust but a paintless end button...
Get used to it.
My "end" key lasted about 3 weeks (I got the phone when it released and noticed the problem while on vacation so I have a good idea of the dates). The "phone" key is doing better, it's just about to blow. I don't use the phone features very much!
Has anyone heard anything about the chipping problem. I take care of my phone but the buttons are almost completly chipped away.
I like everyone else spent good money and now the phone looks like ****. I am seriously thinking about going to a different carrier. Android phone seem to be alot cheaper. I believe the competitors have figured out that they make money with happy customers and dicounting the phones keeps the customers happy.
I will give Sprint and HTC until the end of the month. Then good bye.
