GPS Fix for Intercept Froyo 2.2

My wife and I both have Intercepts that we got last August. Our GPS was working okay until we updated our Android to 2.2. (Froyo). Immediately after I updated each phone, we couldn't get a GPS signal. I make numerous calls to Sprint customer service/tech support and even took my phone in twice to a Sprint repair center. Nobody from Sprint could fix the GPS. Instead, they wanted to charge me $35 each to send me a new phone. Of course, I was livid and refused their "fix."
After reading about Samborski1825's post in the other discussion thread, I started to look up what he said and figured it was worth a try. So for those of you who do not have GPS after you updated to 2.2, here's what I did on both of my phones to get GPS back.
WARNING: this will be hard reset of your phone and you will lose all of your data (phone contacts, text messages, applications). Data that was on my SD card (pictures, movies, apk files) was not deleted by the hard reset.
Backup any data you want to keep (good idea in general)
Call Sprint and ask for your phone's MSL number (6 digit code that you will need to reset it)
From your dial pad, enter ##786#
Here you will see the RTN menu. You can view your phone's data if you want (sort of interesting).
Hit Reset. It will ask for your MSL code. Enter it. Press ok.
The phone will reboot and do a hard reset to the manufacturer's original settings. This is different from "Factory data reset" that you do from the Privacy menu in Settings.
After the phone reboots, wait a bit for your phone to reload. It should reset everything back. If you have a strong signal, the phone will go through its "Hands Free Activiation." Follow the steps. After that is done, you can enable your GPS in Location/Settings. Open up Google Maps. Hit My Location and see if your GPS is back. Good luck.
I can't guarantee anything but I did this on both of my Intercepts today and both of them now have GPS. For those of you willing to try, let me know if this works for you.
By the way, has anyone had trouble with icons and widgets duplicating on top of each other (after the Froyo update)?
I was just looking for some info about that issue and read your post. I got the MSL numbers for our two phones and will try the fix. Thanks for posting. I will let you know what happens.
I'm glad that you were able to fix you GPS with this method. I wish Sprint would inform ALL of their tech support people about this fix when they call. It would save others the time and effort. My GPS is still working solid as a rock since i did this "MSL hard reset".
Cheers
You are officially my hero - thanks! Google and Sprint Navigation apps now work great, and yes, the reset phone from the menu didn't work for me but this dialer code did. For others just call up Sprint and ask for your MSL number -- they seem willing to give it out for a fix.
It was a pain to reinstall all the applications afterwards, but it's worth it to have the GPS working.
Worked for me! No GPS after the OTA 2.2 update on December 17th. Just today I found this thread, called Sprint and got my MSL #, and followed the directions here. It is important to note that the handset DID immediately update to 2.2 again, but with GPS intact this time. I'm swiveling in my deskchair watching the arrow on Google Maps spin in perfect synchronization over my exact location. Couldn't be more pleased. Thank you so much for posting your findings here!
Thank you for finding out how to fix this. I updated my Intercept to 2.2 and bang! lost my GPS. Returned the phone to Sprint and they sent a replacement. Updated that phone to 2.2 and it happened again. I've looked and looked for a fix and have not found it until now....it works great!!
You can get your the MSL code by yourself by following the instructions at this link:

Thanks again for posting this!
Thanks for the post. I just reset my phone and the GPS works fine now. It's a shame I lost all my apps like you said though. Why doesn't Sprint tech support know how to fix the problem, I tried several times with them to no avail.
Well, I did the full reset, and my GPS came back...for a bit. Now it's not working again. I wonder if the GPS is in conflict with one of my apps. I checked the GPS right after the full reset and reboot, and I confirmed my phone was updated to Froyo 2.2.1. It worked then, but I've tried to use it after restoring all my apps and settings and it can't find the GPS. Any other suggestions? I'd rather not uninstall all my apps to see if any of them are the problem.

My wife and son have had GPS issues since 2.2.
It takes FOREVER to get the GPS to lock on. Like 15 - 20 minutes. After a reboot of the phone GPS lock is almost instant.
So either the GPS is going to sleep and cold starting causing the long wait or the a-gps data is not being download except for when the phone is rebooted.
To those still having issues try rebooting and see if you get a quick lock.
I haven't tried resetting yet.
I've been using a temporary fix for GPS on the Intercept.
For ease of deployment, it requires you to add the power bar widget to one of your home screens.
When GPS fails, go to the power bar and switch off GPS and WLAN.
Once these are switched off, long-hold the End button and choose Airplane Mode from the list.
While Airplane mode is ON, use the power bar to switch on both the GPS and WLAN modules.
Long hold the End button once more and choose to exit Airplane Mode.
Your GPS should lock instantly, and usually works fine for a few days, I've noticed.
This fix flushes the GPS data that is in memory, and forces the phone to attempt to reacquire this data, which is usually the problem.
It's also a whole mess quicker than restarting the entire phone - I've usually completed this in about a minute, versus the five or six minutes it takes this slow, slow phone to boot.
That keeps me from pulling hair out when I'm trying to do 4sq checkins at a restaurant or a store, but the GPS thinks I'm ten miles away, at work.
There used to be a way to enter the GPS settings menu using a dialer code but since 2.2 that code no longer works.
I'm just wondering if the a-gps setting is not set and the gps isn't downloading satellite data off the internet.
Does anyone know of a new code to get into the GPS settings menu?

Ok, so my GPS started working again! I don't know exactly why, or if it will stay working, but it connected right away on separate occasions, which it wouldn't do before.
I had uninstalled one app, Super Security Standard, but I also installed and uninstalled some other apps so I can't say if that app caused any problems. Those other installs had also messed things up so that I had to do a battery pull a couple times, so maybe the it was just battery pull that helped clear things up.
Do you restart your phone nightly?
If you don't has your GPS been working well after several days of on time?
My wife and son's will work fine after a restart but after about 6 hours the gps will not lock on anymore unless you wait 15 minutes.
@ToddFelmly
I spent a day looking for a way into this menu you described, but I haven't managed to find a shortcode to get you in.
As for your other question about phone restart frequency and GPS:
I don't restart my phone except when I manage to drop it and the battery falls out, or when it spontaneously reboots itself.
My GPS will work fine for a few days, then need the Airplane Mode fix I mentioned before to get it to work again (it may work without airplane mode, as well, but haven't had to try it in a few days).
I too had the GPS problem after upgrading to 2.2.
1. They suggested taking the battery in & out and restarting. No help there
2. Suggested a hard reset using the Privacy-Factory data reset. Loses all the apps and didn't help
3. The reset suggested here using RTN menu and the MSL number also causes apps to disappear. However, once the phone boots back up and you get signed into Google, all the contacts can be synched back as well as the calendar. The best part is that I got 8 satellites immediately even while indoors. It's not a hardware problem. It's in the software. I think the last type of reset removes 2.1 and its 2,2 upgrade and installs a finished 2.2 product thus eliminating the glitches.
