sprint really needs to get it's act together on this issue/question.  i received an unsolicited callback from the international deparment tonight (apparently because ive called more than once on the same issue) and the agent told me that the phone will be unlocked for international use.  when i pointed out that i had received conflicting information from other sources she put me on hold then came back and said...sorry she was wrong and it will be locked. brilliant.

as unreal as it may seem i dont think even some higher up sprint folks know the final answer yet.

unfortunately i need to know the final answer before i spend $200 or even $400 on a phone and enter into a contract with a $350 early termination fee.  sprint has NO international data plans anymore, just the ala carte rate of $20/mb.  while VZ and T have the same alacarte rate, both offer plans that lower the rate to $0.50/mb or so in most (but not all) countries.  sorry sprint, i'm not spending all this cash on the latest and greatest iPhone only to take it overseas and get charged $20 for checking my email or using google maps to find my hotel.

No you can't use it in another country without unlocking it. I've seen the SIM slot for an AT&T iphone. It's tiny and won't fit anything.

Heather that's really not the issue, you can cut down a normal sim to be a "micro" sim, in addition some countries even sell micro sim cards

Looks like the answer is NO!

I just had a chat with Sprint's International Service rep. Here is an excerpt:

Anna K.: Hi, my name is Anna K.. Thank you for your chat request. Please wait while I review your information.

Anna K.: Hello, How can I help you today?

Me: I want to know if I can use a sim card with the iPhone 4S in India?

Anna K.: Are you trying to use our sim card or another carriers in India?

    Me: another carrier's

Anna K.: The Iphone 4s will not be unlocked for another carrier. You will not be able to use another carriers sim in the device.

Me: Ok. How much will it cost me to use Sprint's sim card then?

Anna K.: For voice services in India it will be $2.49 per minute. Text messages will be 0.50 to send and 0.05 to receive. Data services will be 0.004 per Kilobyte. This includes all email, web browsing, or data applications.

Me: Any other charge besides these?

Anna K.: No, those are the roaming rates for India.

Me: What is the procedure to get a sim card?

Anna K.: It comes with the iphone 4s

Anna K.: It is an international device so it will come with the purchase of the devie.

Me: So, if I take it to India, it will automatically bill me based on my usage?

Anna K.: correct. Your service has to be enabled for international roaming but it will only charge for your usage. The enable does not cost anything to have.

@DCAlexandria - I am a Project Manager with Sprint Corporate and validated the information with our marketing before posting. The SIM card slot is locked and will require activation on the Sprint network. A local international SIM card will not be allowed.

@EuforiaX - I do not know the answer to your first question, although the answer to your second question is yes, it will still be locked.

Thanks for the info RL, but you should tell your bosses this is a rotten policy sure to anger new and existing customers.  It's ashame you will force us to go to the hacking route.

    Thank you RLCOLLECTOR68

So what your saying is that the "World Phone" really isn't and can't be either.

Ultimately, buy the unlocked phone from Apple then use who you want, where you need it. Or buy a prepaid phone when you get there.

    I give up!

@RLCollector, you may very well work for Sprint but after calling several times and chatting 3 times - ALL CSRs have told me I will be able to use my own SIM abroad. My  Blackberry 8830 and HTC Touch Pro 2 have done this successfully so not  sure why they are changing this policy with the offering of the Iphone.  VERY LAME. It seems that with so much conflicting information, there's  not really a way we can be sure until Friday I guess. Sadly, even people  working for Sprint seem like they've been misinformed or are giving out  conflicting info. Did they offer any Iphone training to CSRs? or you? I  know normally the CSRs are following a script so I am very curious. One  question.....Once your contact ends or if you pay full price for the  Iphone, do you know if they will unlock the GSM portion?

@DCAlexandria - thanks for posting that link, however if Sprint's  going to make me go through this much hassle, I will just buy an  unlocked (contract-free) IPhone next month and change carriers! It's too bad because I believe many more loyal long, time customers will follow suit as well.

Having  been a Sprint customer for 10+ years (out of contract since 2008), I  will return all 3 Iphones I pre-ordered if they intend to change this  policy. As a frequent traveler to Europe (at least 6 times a year), it  is a NECESSITY for me to be able use my there....and not have to pay  ridiculous roaming charges. The same goes for my European husband who  travels every other month abroad for work.

Jessica: Thank you for visiting Sprint. What questions can I answer for you today?

You: Jessica, did you disconnect the chat?

You: I was asking a question about the Iphone 4s and the ability to use my German SIM card while there

Jessica: I am very sorry that your chat was disconnected, I  assure you it was not on purpose. I would be happy to assist you with  your question about roaming internationally with the iPhone 4S.

Jessica: Let's move this chat and make it a window of its own. It will  be out of the way and I can stay with you in case you have any questions  or any concerns. Just click on the "Yes" button below and we can  continue.

Jessica: Thank you for moving the chat.

         You: sure

You: no, I didn't think it was done on purpose

Jessica: The iPhone 4S is international-capable, so it has a SIM card slot for international SIM cards.

You: yes, my blackbery 8830 and HTC touch pro 2 were the same

You: and was able to used overseas

You: just like to confirm if the Iphone 4s will be the sa,e

         You: same

Jessica: Yes, this phone is just like those. It has the SIM card slot  for you to use an international SIM card while traveling.

You: and I will be able to use my own SIM, correct?

Jessica: You would need to contact the carrier you would be using in  Germany to confirm if they have micro-SIM cards to use in that phone  while you are there./

You: ok cool...I have one from Germany as I travel there frequently. Thank you

You: so my 2nd question is related to Apple Care +. Unfortunately when I  pre-ordered I didn't know what Apple Care + was so I didn't add it

You: will I be able to add this

Jessica: OK sure thing, you're very welcome. The AppleCare+ service is  unfortunately only able to be added while placing the order. There is no  option from Sprint to add that at a later time, however you can try  contacting Apple directly to see if they allow for that.

         You: oh no--

You: so no option to add even before activation at the Sprint store

Jessica: I am very sorry for the inconvenience, however at this time  for iPhone orders the AppleCare+ must be purchased at the time you place  the order.

Jessica: It is not available to add on later, from Sprint at this time.

You: ok, I will try to add at the Apple Store in that case...hopefully they will allow for this

Jessica: I completely understand, that sounds good.

         You: ok, thank you

         You: that should so it

         You: do it

         You:

         You: thanks for your help

         Jessica: You're very welcome, anytime!

Jessica: Is there anything else I can help you with today?

         You: nope, I'm all set

Jessica: Sounds good! Thank you for visiting www.sprint.com

It is really amazing that we are getting conflicting info from Sprint CSRs. I fail to understand why is it so difficult to get the right answer to this very basic and simple question!

Ok, I chatted with them again, and I got the same answer: NO!!

Jonathan S.: Hi, my name is Jonathan S.. Thank you for your chat request. Please wait while I review your information.
Jonathan S.: How can I assist you?
Me: Hi, I wanted to know if I can use a local Sim card on an IPhone when I travel abroad?#
Jonathan S.: The sim card slot will be locked and will only work with the sprint provided sim card.
M#e: Are you positive about this? My friend contacted Sprint and got just the opposite answer...
Jonathan S.: Yes.  We were just informed yesterday that the sim card slot will be locked on the phone.
    # Me: Ok. So, to use it internationally, one has to pay roaming charges, correct?####
    Jonathan S.: Yes.
    Me: Ok. Thanks.###

This is seriuosly lame if true.  Sprint, I suggest you change this policy and do it soon, otherwise me and other Sprint customers are going to have to write very poor reviews about your service whenever given the oppurtunity.
