According to the latest communication from Sprint Developers, they plan on implementing supportfor MIDP compliant UI (it is the software standard for mobile phones that use Java).
This means that it will take minimum amount of work for third-party application developers to port their mobile phone applications to Sprint Instinct. It also means that many of the FREE Java mobile applications could possibly run on Instinct by simply downloading them to your phone!
More details on this here: http://instinctbookmarks.blogspot.com/2008/07/great-news-sprint-plans-on-implementing.html
Too little to late unfortunately. I already sent mine back. Too bad they decided to hide and and play cloak and dagger games with info on updates. Looks as though it could be decent.
Hmmmm, looks like they ARE listening. Reading into that, they will have a webcast at noon tomorrow (not sure what timezone, but whatever) to discuss plans. That is good news that they are fixing at AND that they are being pretty forward about communicating with the technical community. Both are promising... I guess we'll hold on and see what kind of response we get from the developer community on this. BTW, If Sprint does as planned, I think that may be the last straw for me. I'm not a Google fanboy, but their suite of applications that can go mobile (apps, Calendar, etc) may close the holes I have with the Instinct. I have a method for syncing my contacts (Bluetooth, thanks to the gentleman who suggested that), and I can use Google calendar (Mac) and Google calendar mobile (Instinct) for the rest. I do wish Google had better contacts functionality, but maybe I just haven't figured that out yet.
I have not yet purchased the Instict as I have not been able to access my work website when I've visited several Sprint stores and tried to use the in store sample phones. The sales people have also tried to assist me with this issue as well, although to to avail. I keep getting a message that states that the browser doesnt support the website. Perhaps the impending updates will help with this issue.
Does anyone know where one might be able to go to see the online webcast that supposed to occur at 12 noon today?
How fast do you expect them to come up with updates? The phone has been released for two and a half weeks. I think they are listening and trying to make improvements. These companies are rather large and things take time. Now do I think the phone was ready to be released, perhaps not but still they are making efforts to fix the issues. If it had been 6 months before we saw this then I would share your feelings.

I'm not sure I'd call this cloak and dagger. The phone hasn't been out a month... I'd estimate (from being in IT and dealing with product release cycles) they were somewhat blindsided by the shortcomings of the device. It's gone from iPhone killer (which is PDA like at the least) to a "media phone" with some PDA features - whatever that means. People complain about customer service, but after helping my Dad with his AT&T phone (on wait for over 15 min) and getting nowhere, I'd say Sprint is far better. no, they can't solve everything (shouldn't be a surprise), but they're trying, learning, and appllying lessons learned. Do some of these other companies really give a **** or do they get a good phone and/or good nationwide coverage and call it a day? I can understand ditching the Instinct if it lacks features you need NOW, but if you can wait, it seems advantageous to do so.

Did anyone hear anything about what happened at the webcast that was supposed to be today at noon?
Some details of the Sprint developer webcast are here: http://instinctbookmarks.blogspot.com/2008/07/missed-sprint-instinct-developer.html

Darn..... Development and testing of software takes a lot of time so I understand that they have not announced the dates yet. With a high profile device like Instinct, if they ***** up in the rush to release something, it could cause a lot of bad publicity and irate customers. As an Instinct owner, I would rather see them do it right. And I would be happy if they just add support of standard Java UI (keyboard etc.) because then many other free applications can be downloaded and run on the phone!

I suppose I was looking for a bit more commitment to specific fixes/functions to be implmented (although reafing between the lines, there's indication, but no definitive statement) and maybe some priorities. It seemed vague to me, like a PM calming an irritated client. Ahhh well, my i500 (don't ask) is still kicking. I think I'll let this unfold further...
I got my first bill today and I had 10.00 worth of cf charges. The rep at first gave me a hard time saying the charges were valid and she had no clue as to why they were on my bill. Iadvised her that I had not forwarded any calls to my phone and thatI was notpaying for them so,she gave me a credit. She advised me that no future charges wouldbe adjusted. I'm just reading this post now and realized that this is a company wide problem for all instinct users. So if any cf charges should happen to show on my next bill they will definitely be getting a piece of my mind.
As my user name suggests, I've probably had more cell phones and logged more minutes than most of you combined. I still have my original Army style phone that weights about 5lbs with a 6 inch antenna. Service was Pac_Tel back then. My reason for commenting at all is that this basic device that started as a way to communicate to other individuals while on the go and to improve productivity for those individuals on the move has become a revolution of such that has evolved into a symbol of status, prestige and features that are running like wild fire. The reason that many companies have produced these devices (mostly overseas) is to fit the many different life styles that command these devices. These devices pack more information and process more data than computers that once took the space of 14 x 14 foot room. Every time a new phone hits the market, everyone thinks that every feature that they had on a previous phone should exist on the newest phone that is released. Well, if the market share of individuals willing to pay over $1,000 for this type of phone was evident, then production would start rightaway but, the reality is that most of the individuals in these forums are returning phones under warranty or finding ways to get the newest phone without paying at all. So people, take a realistic look at what you're getting and decide what phone will fit your needs, not just having the latest thing on the market. Samsung makes a pretty good phone for those in the beginning market users and middle markets. For those users that command the work life, road warrior or need the equivalent of a laptop on their phone. Stick to PDA's like Treo and the newest line of Blackberry ( You don't see their prices going down do ya). That is why, they are meant for heavy users and are solid phones for guys like myself. In other words, Don't by the Mercedes E55 when you have no idea what you're getting and how to operate the vehicle but then again, don't buy the toyota Prius thinking you're going from 0-60 in 4.5 either. Do your home work people, stop jumping on the bandwagon just because it's the latest and greatest. Remember, enjoy life and roll with the punches. The pain doesn't last forever. Rundy in ATL
I didn't see why people can't have a little patients about anything. I fully am capable of understanding that things may not work right out of the box. if they work on it and fix it then everything is cool!!!!
I would agree with you there are those that have to have the latest and greatest ....and I'm confidentthe majority are not road warrior people misled by deceptive marketing....the MAJORITYare the beginning and middle market people frustrated because their Prius is notDOINGwhat THEY stated IT WOULD/SHOULD. ahhh...but before you say it does... albeit poorly.....think about how they started marketing this phoneby having it initially listedas aPDA/Smartphone and iPhone comparisons....well..... you've proven your memory is good as far as 1992 ...see if you can remember buying anything within that time frame that wasn't free and did not do as advertised, promised, looked like it would do.....whatever... and try to remember how you felt....if not then how about if your Mercedes gas gauge only worked part of the time, if it would lock up and quit in the middle of a trip without any notice and if your windshield were made out of saran wrap.....I actually like this phone(I know it's hard to believe) I didn't expect it to be perfect, I am merely disappointed with these issues. I was ...and am still hoping they right their wrongs.....the wrongsyou can't possibly NOT know...the Browser Blows - Freezes, Site Denials, etc....the TV is terrible...I along with EVERYONEam suffering the same e-mail issues in countless other posts, lost push mail settings, OWA, exchange...etc.... I only getANGRY when you turn on the TV and can still see commercials stating lighting fast internet/full html...flawless looking TV and so on...I amLIVID and disgustedat the thought this corporate giant poisoned by the greed that has become the standard for business spentmore marketing dollars than quality assured manufacturing. This was obviously (now) rushed to market before the ( I won't say it ) Mecedes came out, then hinted there will be some fixes with no set date until....coincidentally...the release 30 day period was upon us ....with what to them COULD be an onslaught of returns ...and.... shwabap there it is...an estimated partial fix date....my fear now is...they rush the fixes to stop the bleeding. maybe a good time for some closing thoughts......mmm....lets see....
1. I was going to ask if you would have put out this type of product...but then Isensed somecondescending corporate type shrewd arrogance when pointed out you've had more phones than most combined and that I was "this" type of person who doesn't like to do homework. ....
2. If I hadTHAT many would that mean IalwaysHAD the latest?
3. If Ihated homework and never graduated...it would not change theInstinct issues.
4.I've never owned anything Apple nor do I have a desire. but I should say... I am not against it.
5. I do believe in Capitalism.... If it's what ruins this country though...that's it....it's over.
6.How dare I or anybody else come to expect the minimum that was smarmily promised. I guess I'll see you in ****.
7. I don't feel like too much TV ruined me,made me gullible,or part of the walking dead.
8. It is what it is.
