MMS videos only 5 seconds and missing sound

Since installing the OTA update last week both of my Hero phones are having trouble playing MMS video messages. I think this was working fine before the update.
When I receive a video via MMS I can click the slideshow to view the video. The video plays but it only plays 5 seconds of the video, and there is no sound.
I am able to play the full length video by saving it (long click the message, select Save video, then view it in Albumns) but it still has no audio.
Are other people seeing this behavior? Is this new since the update? Does anyone know of a fix/workaround?

Yes, I had this problem since a week after the Sprint HTC hero came out. Videos have no sound when sent from certain phones e.g. Samsung's Reclaim. I just did the update they sent out to fix the bugs with battery life and SMS not shutting off, but the Videos and pics issue is still there. I tried to call Sprint tech support to work the issue, however the tech could not help me. Its frustrating that Sprint procured a phone that does not play sound in videos from certain other phones. Oh, ya the other solution a Sprint Tech offered was to return the phone for a new one! But this would not fix the problem (right?) and would cause me a lot of time to get the phone/apps in the configuration i like it. I am with you man, this sucks for such an awesome phone. My wife sends me videos of our first born, 7 mo old son at work and there is no sound! but if I save them to my computer and play them with, for example quicktime, they have the sound. Plus, I have to same them to my albums to view them for longer than the first 5 seconds. It just sucks for such an awesome phone.
Now that you mention it being messages from certain other phones I realize maybe it's that, not the update. The messages I got prior to the update that I know were working were from a BlackBerry or a Samsung Moment. I am having issues receiving videos from other HTC Hero phones.
This is frustrating! I was excited because the update fixed most of my other issues, but then a new one appeared. ![]()
I have had the same issue too. I posted some other SMS/MMS issues in another thread also but never got a response. Going through all of the topics, it looks like this is an issue for several other people, its just not getting put under one topic thread. So far I have seen 5-6 topics relating to it. It would be nice if it were all together so we can really get a handle on this if it really is a widespread issue.
Yes, the ~20 Nov update did help alot. Now if they can just fix these relatively simple SMS/pic/video issues (no sound in certain vid formats & allowing >5 second playback) I don't think I would not have many other complaints. One other Gripe: when I power down the phone it erases the picture I have of my son (via the Android Picture Frame app) I put on my home screen.
Im just bumping this up the list again to see if anyone else is experiencing still. I read in one of the other posts that Sprint was aware of an MMS/SMS issue but the poster said it was up to HTC to address and then maybe get back to Sprint. I dont know for sure if this is all the same problem and that they are "aware" of it. If someone could confirm, that would really be helpful.
I received another text last night that had two photos attached to it and it wouldnt open with Handcent still. On a video I got two days ago, it did nothing on Handcent, played only first few seconds on stock message app but played completely if I saved it and then went to albums and opened the individual video. It didnt have sound but then again, Im not sure the vid had sound to start with.
Im wondering if this is a Sprint issue or a HTC issue or maybe even a Handcent issue. All I know is, I was able to view/play everything fine before the MR using Handcent and now I can't so......................
Regardless of who is responsible or capable of the fix.........I just want the fix.
I have experienced almost a complete failure when downloading any mms, whether it is in handcent or the regular messaging app. Regular texts seem fine. I have posted at Android central forums but haven't found a fix for it yet. Has anyone emailed the handcent developers or gone into sprint yet?
Hi there,
I am having the same EXACT SAME problem. I have been trying to get Sprint Tech support to help out but they are very reluctant to create a "ticket". I bought the phone on Monday 11/23/2009 from a Corporate Sprint Store. I went to the store with the intention of having the tech department troubleshoot my Sanyo Katana Eclipse X because of issues with the voice sms feature not functioning. The tech department was unable to permanently fix the voice sms feature of my Sanyo Katana, however, while they were trying to fix it, I gave the HTC HERO a test drive and decided to try it out. I understand that new phones sometimes have issues but I use the voice sms AND picture mail features of Sprint WAY TOO MUCH to let these glitches persist. If they can't get the picture mail working on the Hero I will have to go back to my Sanyo. When I go back to my Sanyo and discover the voice SMS STILL won't work after calling and reporting it for once a week for four weeks and unable to have a "ticket" even CREATED.... I will be paying an "Early Termination Fee" and taking my 3 phone lines elswhere. Up until 4 weeks ago, I LOVED Sprint and have been very happy with them for a few years, I recommended their service to people quite often, but I NEED the features that I pay for to work reliably on a consistent basis. If I cant have reliability then I cannot stay. CAN SOMEONE FROM SPRINT PLEASE READ THIS THREAD ABOUT THE HTC HERO PICTURE MAIL ISSUE AND FORWARD IT TO THE APPROPRIATE DEPARTMENT? THANKS IN ADVANCE!! Good luck to everyone else with this issue.

I noticed just now that when I was text messaged a video attachment and picture attachment that they seem to play only for ~5 seconds if the file is displayed in the inbox as "Slideshow." So if you are sent a video or picture and it does; not say slideshow on the file you click to view, then the ~5 second viewing problem seems to disappear. The videos however are still without sound, which is so important to me that I will be placing a call to take this phone back and weigh my options, including switching to another carrier. Maybe if Sprint would have identified the problem by elevating this thread to a ticket item we could get the ball rolling, but they seem to be clueless about the problem.
Hi, I just wanted to let you guys know that I emailed HTC and they sent me a reply saying that they apologize for the inconvenience but that the Hero doesn't offer full flash support and that there are applications in the Android App store that may be able to help. I replied to their email stating that I want to make sure that the reason for the picture mail glitches (only playing for less than 5 seconds and after saving them no sound) is because it is really a glitch or is it definitely because of the "no full flash support". I'm sorry I don't know that much about this stuff but I find it kind of strange that my little Sanyo Katana Eclipse can play picture mail videos and the Hero cannot. Does this mean my Katana has some sort of flash support or is their really something wrong w/ the Hero? I will let ya all know as soon as I find out but I have a feeling my Hero will have to go back. I gotta have my picture mail folks!

I just started noticing this as of last Saturday, didn't seem to have any issues with downloading pics prior to then. I am also not using wifi and have good reception and everything is up to date. Very frustrating!
I just got off the phone with HTC. Although they weren't able to resolve the problem I did realize some new information by sending a video to myself. There seems to be some sort of bug in the Messages application where it's detecting some videos as slide shows. Slide shows open in an application in a vertical orientation (it looks like the Albums application but I don't know for sure) and videos open in the media player application in a horizontal orientation.
I tried messaging a video to myself and the behavior was obvious. The outgoing message appeared in the Messages application as a slide show. Clicking it played only 5 seconds of the video without sound in a vertical orientation. However, the received message appeared properly as a video. Clicking it played the full video with sound in a horizontal orientation.
This new information is interesting but doesn't really solve the problem. I haven't found a way to force the Messages application to properly see the video as a video instead of a slide show. Is this similar to what others are seeing? Some videos show appear as a video in the Messages application and they work right, others appear as slideshow and they play 5 seconds without sound?
Bingo. It's the slideshow formatting causing 5 sec play time. I noticed the same thing too today when o sent myself a pic. I found another bug too: when attaching a pic and "replying" to >1 person, it only send to the first person. HTC IS MAJORLY FLAWED IN THEIR ATTEMPT WITH THE ENTIRE TEXTING SOFTWARE. WHOEVER WAS THE PROJECT MANAGER FOR THIS PORTION SHOULD BE FIRED.
I'm also experiencing this problem and I'm on my 4th HTC Hero because no one seems to know what the problem is, and each time I speak to someone (at Sprint & HTC) they say it's not a known issue and the finger is pointed at the other. Then I come here and see that it's very well a known issue which makes me even more frustrated.
One thing I did notice is that my first Hero did not say "with Google" on the back & I was able to view video messages just fine. It had other problems which led me to exchange it, which I now regret since I feel like those problems were probably corrected after the update. Every other handset after that exchange said "with Google" on the back and they all had this mms issue.
I'm EXTREMELY frustrated!! How many times are they going to change my phone out? I was out of contract & re-signed just to have this phone & I'm also paying twice as much. I'm now paying for a service that I'm not even receiving and that no one can fix. Other than this issue, I love this phone, but this is a big issue for me. Especially since I was highly considering switching to another carrier. I found out about the mms issue on my exchanged phone right after my frist 30 days (the exchange arrived on day 30).
I also wanted to add that I believe I first noticed the problem even before the update.
