"casual data usage"

Ok. I tried to read the other threads on text/picture messaging and data messaging, but I only became more confused! I have the "Everything Messaging" plan with 450 minutes. This past billing cycle, I did download one game (at the cost of $2.49) and I have a "casual data usage" charge of $16.68. I understand that when I connect to the internet and download games/ringers/backgrounds I get charged. I don't send picture messages because they route me to the internet (which is really lame because I chose my plan so I COULD send pictures and texts). I do recieve picture mail without being connected to the internet.
So I guess my basic question is, what do I need to AVOID so I don't get casual data usage charges???
This is going to sound cynical, but honestly...you have 3 choices...
1. Upgrade to a Everything Data plan (not necessarily affordable) to avoid any additional "casual" data charges
2. Shut off ALL internet access
3. Swap out of your Sprint phone and into a Nextel iDEN phone instead.
Amazing how the above will solve any and all casual data charges. I've been a Nextel user for the past 12 years...and average about 600-800 messages (internationally no less) per month, and have yet to be charged for any data or message usage. Go figure.
Realistically, your casual data charges may depend on which phone you use. Some phones attempt to access the internet even though you don't think that they should be. For example, if you use the built-in MP3 player on some of the Sprint CDMA phones, those MP3 programs actually access the internet to download the info of the song you're playing despite the fact that you may even already have that info saved on a SD disk. Other phones access the web to download updates without ever informing the user. So, be careful.
On everything messaging plans any data fees associated with picture mail should be waived when accessed from the picture mail menu because they are included in your plan. When you downloaded the game you were subject to a .03/kb data transfer fee because your plan does not include data access. However this should not have added to over $16. You will receive casual data charges when you go online from any source other than the picture mail menu on your phone.
I'VE BEEN WITH SPRINT GOING ON 13 YEARS NOW. THESE HIDDEN FEES ARE JUSTGETTING TO BE TO MUCH. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT EMEXUS ALERT IS? EVDO CASUAL DATA. ALSO GETTING CHARGED TWICE ON A FAMILY PLAN OF 69.99 AT THE END OF THE MONTH THE BILL IS AROUND 300.00 EACH TIME. AND ON A FIXED INCOME IT'S TO MUCH.
Emexus alert sounds like a 2rd party "premium text message" service. Kind of liek those free ringtone/wallpaper/horoscope commercials you see on TV. The fine print in each of those says you are agreeing to a $9.99 monthly charge usually. Easiest way is to reply to the text message they send out every month with the word STOP/UNSUBSCRIBE/CANCEL one of those should do the trick. Sometimes the bill says the 5 digit short code as well so you can just send it to that (depends on if the company sends Sprint that info).
Casual data means that youare somehow accessing the internet on the device, either by uploading pictures to your Picture Mail album or surfing the web, using Pocket Express, etc. Some applications like the MP3 player also may access the internet in the background to download song info, etc. depending on the phone and software. Without a data plan of course.
As for getting charged twice on a family plan that should be easy to fix, most likely the lines were setup for two primary lines instead of a single primary and secondaries. Care should be able to fix it quickly if that is hte case, if it isn't then it may need a separate ticket made for it to get fixed.
I have unlimited Picture, Text, & Video. I have been charged a casual data usage anytime time I receive a picture or video. My local news station did an investigative report on it and they contacted Sprint. The Sprint Rep told KETV news that we should not be charged for viewing pictures and video on our phone based on our plan. We are still getting charged each month... The last CSR we spoke to did not take the charge off. This is going to cause a Class-Action agaist Sprint if they don't fix this problem. Is there anyway short of a lawyer that will get the charges stopped for good?
There is one way to get the charges stopped for good - call Sprint and have them turn off data access. Unfortunately you won't have picture/video messaging. You still have txt messaging. At least you won't get the surprising EVDO charges each month.
It's preposterous that the Everything Messaging plan has unlimited picture messaging, but the phone has to access the data network in order to send/receive them, and that data is extra $. (Is that not preposterous to anyone at Sprint???) For three straight months I called in and each CSR took off the charges without any resistance. That was about a year ago. If Sprint is now refusing to remove extra charges in this situation they are asking for a class action. I got tired of dealing with it so now we live without pic messages. I keep checking back to see if Sprint has fixed this, but it sounds like they haven't. The other option is to move up to the everything data plan.
I experienced the same thing with my son's phone the first month we had this plan. I do wish Sprint would change the "Free Unlimited Picture Mail" that they claim I have on my plan, because as far as I can tell you cannot send pictures unless you access the web, and that is when you get charged data fees. I had the data blocked on his phone, so he can't send pics. So, he does NOT have "Free Unlimited Picture Mail" does he?
I am not an idiot but I find this very confusing. I am not going to add data to my plan, just so he can send the pics they say he can send for free unlimited???? Does that sound crazy?
Concern customer,
I'am as like many of you disappointed on this casual data usage. If there was a way where one could just go into there cell phone and just lock out the internet connection and only use it when one really needed it and new what the consequences were going to be, it would safe us alot of disappointment plus money, especially in times like these. My question is since i'm new to SPRINT and this casual data usage , does one get charge, when someone sends us a picture or when we take pictures and keep them to ourselfs stored on our picture album. One more question, might sound silly, but none of this has nothing to do with Text Messages right!. Thank you all and a good day or night. Concern Customer!
On an everything messaging plan picture mail can be used UNL as follows:
You can send as many pictures as you like to any carrier
You can receive as many pictures as you like from a Sprint customer
If you receive picture mail from any other carriers and DO NOT have a data plan you are mostly likely viewing the picture hosted on said carriers server, if you don’t have a data plan to cover this you will be charged casual data usage.

Not true, It includes UNLIMITED Text and Picture messages TO AND FROM ANY CARRIER.
That's not true. Let me clarify... If you receive picture mail message with a link other than pictures.sprintpcs.com, which a lot of phones do, this means its coming from another carrier then you WILL be charged casual data.
I believe I have the same issue that the lot of you are discussing. I have the wretched and terribly simplistic (even to this simplistic user!!) Sanyo SPHM500. I think. It looks like a Blackberry but is nowhere close.
Evidently, it tries to access the internet, as well, when sending or receiving pictures. Like the rest of you, I wanted the FREE UNLIMITED PICTURE MAIL, but if I am being charged for data usage, that certainly negates the "free" portion of that promise.
What I would like to find out are a list of phones that do NOT access the internet when sending?? I don't need touch screen or music or any of that. Just a QWERTY keyboard and a decent-sized screen.
Thanks, all. By the way - are we moving forward with this Class Action? I'm in. Because here's the kicker...the gal that was so helpful to me a couple of months ago with the initial issue that caused me to change plans (in the Employees Helping Customers department) just told me that I would have to now go back through regular customer service because she had "closed our case." HUH??? How's that for a love 'em and leave 'em??

I recalled discussing the internet access with Holly (the representative from Employees Helping Customers that just bumped me to the curb) and remembered that there is a screen under our online account where you can literally check off the handsets (phone numbers) which you would like to be restricted from wireless web access. Guess who already had all 3 phones checked off - since at least 8/6 which was the last date that I spoke to Holly. Yep! I'm NOT supposed to be able to access the web, even if I try. Give me a class action...I'm ready to raise the roof!!!!
And to build on Jimbo's post:
Weird. "Messaging: Unlimited nationwide, text, picture and video messaging to anyone on any network." I never saw anything that says if you get picture mail from someone on another network that you'd get charged. Where was that info on the plan that I agreed too when I changed plans online. I still don't see that anywhere on the website...
