Straight out of the gate at CTIA, Sprint today announced the Samsung Nexus S 4G, our first device running Android OS version 2.3 'Gingerbread' and our first device to feature the stock Android 'Google Experience'. The device is set to launch some time in the Spring and the Product Ambassador team is excited about this excellent new result of our ongoing partnership with Google.

As always, we want to provide you with all of the juicy details, so here goes:

Nexus S 4G Q&A

Q: When will Nexus S 4G be available, and how much will it cost?
A: We will share pricing and availability closer to launch.

Q: Will Nexus S 4G be exclusive to Sprint?
A: Sprint (and its WiMAX partners) will have exclusivity on offering a 4G-capable Nexus S device for a specific time period. However, we cannot discuss the details or length of this agreement.

Q: What rate plans are required for Nexus S 4G?

A: Customers purchasing Nexus S 4G will choose from the same plans that PDA/Smart Device buyers do today (i.e. Everything Data/Simply Everything/Business Advantage Messaging & Data). The $10 Premium Data add-on will apply for each smartphone on the account. This add-on offers a "3G/4G Premium Data Experience." The $10 add-on is not NVP discountable.

Q: How much is the Mobile Hotspot capability?

A: Mobile Hotspot capability for Nexus S 4G is a $29.99 optional add-on. It allows the customer to use Nexus S as a Mobile Hotspot device capable of sending out a Wi-Fi signal to up to six Wi-Fi capable devices. This follows the new discounting rules launching in July and is not NVP discountable (e.g. SOCs $29.99 and below are not discountable; SOCs $30 and up are discountable).

Q: Can Nexus S 4G be provisioned for 4G service only?

A: No. It is a dual-mode device; therefore it supports both 3G and 4G. The device will run on 3G when used outside of a 4G launched market.

Q: What accessories are for sale for Nexus S 4G?

A: Sprint will launch traditional handset accessories including hands-free, power, fashion and carry solutions. In addition, Sprint plans to deliver unique accessories that deliver on the robust multimedia and 4G experiences.

Features

Q: HTC EVO 4G has a 4.3-inch screen; why does Nexus S 4G only have a 4-inch screen?

A: Sprint tries to offer a variety of form factors, operating systems, price points, features and appearance for our customers to choose from.

Q: Does the screen offer HD resolution for viewing?
A: No, while the 4-inch Super AMOLED screen delivers a brilliant Super AMOLED 16-million color for a high-resolution widescreen viewing experience, the resolution of the display is 480x800 (WVGA), which is not technically high-definition.

Q: Can Nexus S 4G view and edit documents?

A: Yes, in fact, there are a variety of applications available that allow Nexus S 4G to open and make changes to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint or PDF documents.

Q: Can the front-facing camera be used for a Skype video call?
A: As of today, there is not a Skype application using video available for Android, and we are unable to speculate whether this may change in the future. However, as an open platform, Android does support video chat applications available through Android Market - e.g. Fring and Qik.

NOTE: Voice-only downloadable Skype applications (Skype Lite) are available today for Android phones.

Q: Which Bluetooth profiles and functions does the phone support?

A: The phone supports the following Bluetooth Profiles: Bluetooth Headset, Hands free, A2DP, and FTP, as well as other standard profiles.

Applications

Q: There are no Sprint Services offered on this device; why is that?

A: This is a Google experience device and in order to keep the pure Google experience, Sprint is not adding any preloaded applications or supporting software.

Q: What types of email does my device support?

A: Microsoft Exchange, Gmail, IMAP4 and POP3.

Q: How many email accounts can my device support?

A: 10 accounts. 1 Exchange account and the rest as Gmail, IMAP or POP accounts.

Q: Does the included browser natively support PDF?
A: PDF's will open in a separate app.

Q: What 4G apps are available on Nexus S 4G?

A: Android Market offers thousands apps. The performance of today's Android apps that run on 3G, particularly those with video, will be enhanced by 4G speed. In addition to that, application developers will be introducing new apps that take advantage of 4G power in new ways - games and communications tools and other apps that bring together video, presence and location simultaneously, and capabilities that haven't yet been imagined. For example, an application developer might create an app that allows a customer to watch a streaming sporting event while pulling down stats and conducting a video chat with a friend all at once.

Q: Where can I find more information about Android Market and Google applications for Android?

A: For more information about Android and Google applications please visit http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/topic.py?hl=en&topic=13588

Q: Can I install non Android Market applications?

A: To allow the installation of non Android Market applications, from the Home screen press Menu > Settings > Applications and enable Unknown sources.

Q: Where can I purchase games or apps for my phone?

A: Android Market has a large selection of games available for download. Android Market provides direct access to useful applications and fun games, which you can download and install on your phone. Applications can be either purchased or downloaded for free.

Q: You say that Nexus S 4G is made for video content - how will people acquire this content?
A: The 4-inch Super AMOLED screen and high-fidelity surround sound, 3.5 mm headset jack, make Nexus S wonderful platform for wireless entertainment - at 3G as well as 4G speeds. Customers can choose from a variety of video available on the Web or sideload video for viewing later on.

Q: How can application developers start developing 4G apps now for Nexus S 4G?

A: A Sprint 4G developer guide is available today from the Sprint ADP Web site, http://developer.sprint.com/. The Sprint 4G developer guide explains how to develop on a 2.1 handset and take advantage of 4G and unique hardware/software capabilities, including how to use a forward-facing camera in an app; HDMI output; and 4G network detection vs. 3G/Wi-Fi network, plus sample apps and source code that highlight these features. The Sprint 4G developer guide will supplement the Android 2.3 SDK.

Software Updates

Q: What is the upgrade path for Nexus S 4G?

A: Nexus S 4G is comes loaded with stock Android 2.3. Because it is built on stock Android, Sprint Nexus S 4G customers will be among the first to receive Android software upgrades and new Google mobile apps. In many cases, the device will get the updates and new apps as soon as they are available.

Q: Where can I find the latest downloads and software updates for my phone?

A: You can find the latest manuals, software, announcements, updates and other content for your phone in the Support section of our website.

Q: Does Nexus S 4G have the same Android improvements (like speech-to-text, animated wallpapers, Google navigation) as the Nexus One?
