From the Sprint Newsroom:

New cloud service gives Sprint customers complete flexibility to store, access and share content from any Web-enabled device

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. & SAN FRANCISCO (BUSINESS WIRE), January 27, 2014 - Sprint (NYSE: S), one of the only U.S. wireless carriers to offer unlimited talk, text and data, today announced that it is working with Pogoplug to add unlimited cloud storage to its suite of unlimited services. Sprint customers can now access 5GB of cloud storage for no additional charge through Pogoplug, with the option to upgrade to unlimited storage for only $4.99 per month.

Beginning Jan. 27, Sprint iPhone and Android™ smartphone users can download Pogoplug to their device, giving them one secure place to store and organize personal photos, videos, music and more. With Pogoplug, Sprint customers can automatically back up important content, access their files from any Web-enabled device, and seamlessly migrate or switch devices, without losing any content.

All Sprint smartphone customers will receive 5GB of cloud storage for no additional charge, or they may upgrade to unlimited storage for $4.99 per month, which will be added to their monthly bill from Sprint. Pogoplug can easily be downloaded from Sprint Zone, the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Customers should be aware of the one ring scam targeting all carriers, where a computer sends thousands of calls to random cell phone numbers, rings once, and then disconnects. Returning the call could result in unwanted charges to your bill, including international fees.

Why is Picture Mail going away?

Picture Mail was a service that was offered when smartphones and their capabilities were not available. It provided a way to send pictures when other options were not available.  There are now many more options available, and very few customers are using Picture Mail.  The Picture Mail platform has become obsolete, and Sprint has decided that it is time to end the service.

When will the change take effect?

Picture Mail will not be available after April 30, 2014.

Do I need to take any actions?

There is nothing you need to do; you will just be unable to send and receive Picture Mails.  If you want to continue to be able to send and receive pictures or other materials such as movie clips and audio files, you will either need to use an alternate method on the phone or change to a Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) capable phone.

Will the change affect my bill?

If you are billed for Picture Mail as an add-on service, Sprint will remove the add-on, and you will no longer be billed for it.

Can I still use my phone to send or upload pictures?

It depends on the phone. For some phones, pictures can be attached to an email.  Also, there may be 3rd party applications that can be downloaded to the phone.  For both of these options, data is required and may not be included in the price plan which would result in data charges being incurred.

There will be phones that cannot send emails and cannot download a replacement application.  If you have one of those devices and want to continue sending and receiving multimedia messages, the only option is to replace the phone with an MMS capable phone.

What if I do not want to change phones?

The phone can still be used, but Picture Mail messaging will no longer work.

Will I still be able to send and receive text messages?

Yes, text messages without attached content will still be able to be sent and received.

If I change phones to allow me to send MMS messages, can I keep my old price plan?

It depends on whether the price plan is available on the new phone.  If it is, the plan can still be used.  If not, there are replacement plans that can be used although the prices and features may be different.

I may cancel my plan because this change. Will I have to pay an Early Termination Fee?

If you cancel your service because of the Picture Mail change you will not be charged an ETF. However, we want to keep you as a Sprint customer and we hope that you’ll consider upgrading to one of our many smartphone selections, which will allow you send and receive pictures, browse the Internet and much more.

I believe I have saved Picture Mail messages. How can I retrieve them?

Until Picture Mail goes away, you can use Picture Mail to send your pictures to an email address or another phone, or you can upload your pictures to supported social media sites. You also may be able to use email or other applications to move pictures from your phone to a computer (see response below).  Sprint discontinued its online storage service in 2012, so any pictures you stored using the Picture Mail online storage capability can no longer be retrieved.

When Picture Mail goes away, how can I get the pictures off of the phone?

You may be able to use alternate methods to send or upload pictures from the phone, like email or other 3rd party applications.  If the phone cannot use email or a 3rd party application, it may be possible to directly connect your phone to a computer, and the pictures can be downloaded from the phone to the computer.  If neither of these options work, you can take the phone to a Repair Center, and technicians can move your pictures to a phone or flash drive that you have provided.

As you may have heard, Sprint has decided to end Premium Short Code Messaging campaigns (PSMS) with the exception of Political Contributions and Mobile Donations.  The decision is part of our constant evaluation of the services we offer. Premium short codes refers to a special service where you can receive mobile content from third-party mobile service providers and use your cell phone bill as a payment method. The third-party mobile service providers use text messaging to deliver the content to your device (Ex: daily horoscopes or joke of the day alerts).

We have stopped any customers from being able to purchase new PSMS content. For customers that have already subscribed to services, the last renewal date is December 31st, which would mean January is the last month you would get this type content. For options to replace the content previously received from third-party mobile service providers, please use the following as a guide:

  • Android customers can use Google Play
  • iPhone customers can use the iPhone App store
  • Feature phone customers can use Sprint.com Digital Lounge, and the mobile web

What happens if I lose or break my phone – Can my content be restored?

Currently there is no way to restore content once the phone is lost or broken. However, you can archive your music library on your computer since this is DRM-Free content.

Smartphones are sure to top many teens’ and tweens’ holiday wish lists. Parents may be concerned about the responsibility that comes along with owning a smartphone: How do I ensure my son or daughter makes wise decisions when using their smartphone? How do I keep it from disrupting school, sleep and family time? What happens if they lose it?

Teen smartphone adoption statistic:

According to Nielsen, American teenagers between 13 and 17 years old demonstrate the most dramatic increase in U.S. smartphone adoption, growing from 36 percent of teens who own mobile phones saying they owned a smartphone in July 2011 to 58 percent in July 2012 – a 61 percent increase.

Parenting Expert, Amy McCready

Sprint partnered with parenting expert Amy McCready to help parents manage the various challenges they face when it comes to their children using smartphones.  McCready tested Sprint Guardian apps - Sprint Family Locator, Sprint Mobile Controls and Sprint Drive First. She has shared her perspective in blog posts and in media interviews.

“I encourage parents to have an open conversation with their children about how to use their mobile phone safely and responsibly but also to take advantage of technology available to them, such as these Sprint Guardian applications. We can’t always control our kids, but we can try to control the environment and take away that temptation to use their phone at inappropriate times. Instead of physically taking the phone away, I have found the Sprint Guardian applications really helpful, convenient and affordable.”

About Sprint Guardian

The Family Safety Essentials from Safely enables families to protect their phone-carrying children through location checks and limits on texting while driving or at school. The Sprint Hackathon was a great success at Open Solutions Conference in San Jose. More than 175 developers worked for less than 24 hours to create innovative applications for cash prizes. Sprint, Samsung and Wireless Industry Partnership (WIP) awarded $25,000 in prizes to app developers in several different categories, and to the three finalists for the “Best of Show” award. The “Best of Show” winner received $7,000; with $2,000 and $1,000 going to second and third place respectively.

Users simply logon to their Facebook account and access their photos. Then, they take the Samsung S Pen and trace over the photo. The photo becomes an original drawing to post back to the users Facebook account.

“Congratulations to Peter and all the winners in the Sprint Hackathon,” said Kevin McGinnis, vice president-Product. “It was exciting to see the participating developers create useful and inventive apps through the capabilities that Sprint and our hackathon sponsors offer. Thieves beware: There’s a new device-protection app in town, and it’s going to make your life a lot more difficult!

All Sprint customers (including employees and Sprint Wireless Advantage Club customers) who purchased TEP can download this Protection App for free and instantly have the power to locate a device quickly to avoid an insurance claim and to keep valuable personal data secure.

Lots of benefits

  •     More than 50 Sprint devices can support this app. (Go to www.sprint.com/protection and click on Supported Devices to find out if yours is on the list.)
  •     To begin using the service, you simply go to www. sprint.com/protection from any browser to:
    •         Find a lost phone quickly via Web interface or Location History, even if the phone is turned off.
    •         Activate audible alarm to locate misplaced phone when on vibrate or silent.
    •         Remotely lock a lost phone and/or erase contacts to keep data secure.
    •         Sync address book contacts and manage them online to easily transfer to a new device at upgrade.

Still not convinced?  Here’s what one Sprint customer had to say about the service:

“Loooooove it! Trust me it works. I have lost my cell so many times and have had to replace it. I love this app. Since I got the app I still lose my cell but now I find it!

I even left it on the hospitial bed & it ended up at their laundry company. I used the app and found it the same day. The alarm even worked, scared the poor truck

driver half to death. I would tell anyone with Sprint to get it!”                                                        Melissa May 23, 2012

Now that you’re sold on this service and assuming you have TEP, there are three ways you can add the Protection App to your device:

Sprint will discontinue its Roadside Rescue service on Oct. 31, 2012.  To make sure you’re prepared, you can call AAA at 888-216-7821 to review membership options or check with your auto insurance provider for a similar program.

Customers who subscribe to the service are being notified about the change through information in their September and October Sprint bills.
