Sprint ID simplifies app-discoverability, provides complete mobile experience for consumers, businesses and students in a bundled package

LG Optimus MTV Sprint ID.JPG

Kevin McGinnis, vice president-Product, Sprint

•          “Sprint ID helps customers – especially those new to smartphones – easily gain access to apps they’ll enjoy without the daunting task of wading through Android Market’s 250,000+ apps. Even more so now than when we launched Sprint ID last year, since so much of the population is buying smartphones1, we realize that we need to give customers an easier path to access content. We’re also excited about not just the opportunities Sprint ID has presented to consumers but also to our business customers with ID packs such as Real Estate Pro.”

We know that a lot of tech-savvy wireless phone users love to find new apps and tell their friends about their favorites. We know, though, that many others just have a hard time sorting through an overflowing Android Market or other app site to find the ones that they will enjoy and use the most.

A year ago Sprint offered help for this challenge in the form of Sprint ID. An industry first, Sprint ID is a service that simplifies the process of customizing select Android™ powered devices. Sprint ‘ID packs’ deliver a complete mobile experience – centered around consumers’ or businesses’ interests or favorite brands – including applications, widgets, ringtones and wallpapers, in a couple simple clicks.

Consumers who have less experience with smartphones are finding the service useful. And, considering that customers have downloaded six million ID packs in the past year, we’re guessing that even some of the most tech savvy among us also have given Sprint ID a try.

Sprint ID stats:

•          Customers have downloaded six million ID packs

•          Average 500,000 downloads per month

•          The most popular branded Sprint ID packs include Disney Channel, ESPN, E!, Glu Games, MTV, NASCAR, Yahoo!

•          Popular lifestyle ID categories include Entertainment, Green, Socially Connected, Health & Fitness, Fashion & Beauty, Business Professional, Auto Enthusiast and several Spanish-language ID packs from LatCel.

So whether you are a sports fan, music lover, celebrity watcher, fitness fanatic, gamer, student or business professional, Sprint ID makes it easy for you to personalize your smartphone or tablet by downloading an ID pack with mobile content to fit your lifestyle.

Individual consumers aren’t the only ones who have found Sprint ID packs to be valuable. Here are some other uses we have seen:

•          Universities as a way to offer useful information to students and faculty. University of Missouri launched a student ID pack and several other universities are currently developing ID packs.

•          Six wholesale partners have launched Sprint ID devices to their customer bases.

•          Boost Mobile’s Mobile ID launched, featuring eight ID packs for prepaid users.

•          Sprint developed an Employee ID pack for internal Sprint employee use.

•          Other enterprises have deployed ID packs targeting specific groups of users within their companies.

•          Sprint’s Green ID pack offers apps and widgets with tips for living a more environmentally sustainable lifestyle.

•          Sprint’s Relay ID pack provides the hard of hearing with voice mail transcripts, visual and vibrating alerts, readable captions and more.

What Partners are Saying:

“MTV Music ID provides today’s on-the-go music fan easy access to their favorite MTV and third party music content through multiple music-centric apps and widgets,” said Dermot McCormack, Executive Vice President, Digital Media, MTV Networks Music & Logo Group “We’re pleased to have partnered with Sprint on this unique, popular and innovative product.”

“We recently launched the E! ID pack, giving fans a complete E! mobile experience on their Android device, including our popular E! Online, Keeping Up With the Kardashians and Live From the Red Carpet apps, and the response from our audience has been terrific,” said John Najarian, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Digital and Business Development, E! Entertainment.  “Creating an ID pack with Sprint was an easy way for us to offer our audience all our best mobile content in a bundled package.”

“Creating the three Lo2Yo ID packs for the Latino community has made it so much easier for bi-lingual [English/Spanish] users to access culturally relevant and high-quality content, as well as enabling them to quickly switch between the two languages,” said Jorge Rincon, CEO of LatCel.”Lo2Yo IDs have become a fantastic way to engage with the highly coveted Hispanic market audience.”

What Media is Saying:

Sprint users needn’t be overwhelmed by the number of app choices on their Android phones. The carrier’s Sprint ID service offers prepackaged apps that cater to different tastes and hobbies. –The New York Times

Sprint’s Green ID Pack is installed on specific phones and tablets, but any Android user can download the environmentally friendly apps in the pack. TreeHugger, Green Now and Shop Green are among the apps listed. With iRecycle, you identify what you want to recycle and the app tells you where to take it. –The New York Times

For the first time since switching to AT&T to become an iPhone devotee, I’m a little jealous of Sprint users. Sprint’s new Green ID Pack lets customers download eco-friendly content directly to their smartphones... It’s a great example of a brand using content to encourage loyalty and connect with users. – Get a Word In

Android is one of the most customizable platforms around, and Sprint ID is a great option to quickly give your phone a totally new look and feel.  The nice thing about the MTV Music ID pack is that it includes several apps that many users install anyway, like SoundHound and Pandora.  If you love music and have a Samsung Transform, LG Optimus S, or Sanyo Zio, be sure to check out the MTC Music ID pack. –PhoneDog

Sprint launched the effort back at the CTIA show in October, but is now getting up to speed by both adding more devices compatible with Sprint ID and by lining up some brand-name content. –All Things Digital

For content providers like MTV, the Sprint ID pack format represents an opportunity to deliver content directly to the mobile audience--in many ways, its approach recalls the MVNO model, but without the service plans and handsets. In addition, the ID packs offer publishers the opportunity to curate consumers' mobile app download experience, guaranteeing that users obtain an aggregate of integrated, complementary solutions in one fell swoop. –FierceMobileContent

Benefits to developers/partners:

•          Allows strong content partners to become mobile service providers without the cost and hassle of running a nationwide cellular network, billing integration, or device manufacturing commitments.

•          Provides an additional distribution channel for applications and services.

•          Improves the search and discoverability of Android apps and services versus the current experience in Android Market™.

•          Provides consumer brands, enterprises, B-2-B, hybrid MVNOs with ability to define the experience they want for their customers/employees via mobile bundles.

To learn more about developing Sprint ID packs, visit: Sprint Developer Program information about Sprint ID

“Sprint ID allows our customers to have the maximum amount of flexibility and control over the content on their device and allows our trusted partners like ESPN, Disney and MTV the opportunity to create a mobile experience for their audience and to get closer to their most loyal customers who have a strong brand affinity,” said Kevin McGinnis, vice president-Product, Sprint.

There are currently 12 Sprint ID-capable devices (Android-powered smartphones and a tablet) and 45 ID packs focused on specific consumer interests, popular brands, business, enterprise, MVNO and education. Details are outlined in the following table:

According to a Nielsen study last year, games are the most popular genre of apps. Sixty percent of those who said they had downloaded an app in the last 30 days said they had also played a gaming app during that period.

I’m sure this statistic is not a big surprise to smartphone users. Who doesn’t like to take a break from the day and play Angry Birds? Here is one interesting statistic from the study: gaming and social networking apps are more popular with women than men.

When you download your next game, here are a few you may want to try:

Cut the Rope – very popular and fun game! The little monster Om Nom is hungry and the only thing standing between him and a full belly is you – that is your help cutting the ropes that hold the candy he wants. Swipe your finger across the ropes to release the delicious bundles into his mouth. But don’t forget to collect the stars and break the bubbles along the way – easier said than done when enemies and obstacles wait!

Roboto -- Roboto is an action packed game with more than 30 exciting levels, epic end boss battles and addictive minigames.

As students head back to school, smartphones and tablets are two important items for today’s college student. There are so many possibilities on how wireless technology and applications can be used academically and socially on the college campus. What apps have you found to be useful on the college campus? Are college professors embracing this new technology in the classroom?

Hello, I’m a Sprint Corporate Communications Manager who was recently on a popular radio show in Los Angeles hosted by Jeff Levy, called “Livin’ the e-life,” on KFWB 980 AM to talk about Sprint ID, a unique, simplified way to find apps and customize your Android device.

Click the audio player to listen. Here’s what I talked about.

Sprint launched something last year called Sprint ID, which simplifies the process of finding apps for your phone.

Since Android Market now has more than 250,000 apps, Sprint ID helps our customers cut through the clutter to find apps they’ll enjoy.

Sprint created something called ID packs, which are a variety of apps, widgets, shortcuts and other content that’s downloaded onto the device in a couple simple clicks.

There’s something for everyone.

If you love sports, there’s an ESPN ID pack with apps to help you keep up with your favorite teams or watch ESPN shows live or on demand.

I love using the Disney Channel ID pack for my 2 year old daughter. She can watch Disney Channel shows while we’re in the car or away from home, right on my phone.

The Green ID pack offers tips for living a greener lifestyle. There are also apps to find local farmer’s markets, to find more energy efficient light bulbs and widgets to buy sustainable products.

Since I live in L.A., the hub of the entertainment industry, I especially like the new E! ID pack, which keeps you up to date with your favorite celebrities through photo, news and video apps.

Other ID packs include NASCAR, MTV Music ID, HSN (for shopping on the go), Health and Fitness, and much more. You can see all 30 ID packs by visiting www.sprint.com/sprintid and clicking on the, “See All ID Packs” tab on the bottom of the page.

To get started, simply click on the ID icon on the bottom of your Sprint ID capable device. You can see a catalog of ID packs on your device and choose up to five ID packs to download and can easily switch between them or swap them out for new ones.

Sprint ID packs are free to download with an Everything Data plan.

There are currently 8 Sprint ID-capable devices available now, but the list keeps growing. Devices include: the NEW Motorola PHOTON 4G, which is Sprint’s first international 4G smartphone and the NEW Samsung Conquer 4G, which offers 4G for under $100.

There’s also the eco-friendly Samsung Replenish; and it’s not just Android-powered smartphones, there’s also a tablet that’s Sprint ID-capable, the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Other Sprint ID capable devices include Samsung Epic 4G, LG Optimus S, Sanyo Zio and Samsung Transform.

So listen to the radio piece and tell us how you like Sprint ID.

Looking for healthier food alternatives while grocery shopping or wondering if that granola bar you’re about to eat is really as healthy as it appears?

Fooducate Nutrition Scanner

Simply scan the product’s barcode and this app gives a grade from A to F to let you know how smart your food choice really is. It lists key nutritional information, such as displaying how many calories per serving, sugar per serving, lets you know if the food contains trans-fat or is made with refined flours, etc. This is an easier alternative than trying to decode nutrition fact labels and ingredient lists on food packages.

You can even click on a tab within the app and you can see healthier food alternatives!
