Drawing on 12 years of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) experience, Sprint is running wild developing even more ways to carve out their leadership in the M2M space. Sprint’s primary focus is Connected Transportation; Connected Meters, Sensors & Alarms; Connected Machines, Screens & Things; and Connected Personal Devices, and plans to expand their footprint within each of these segments.

So what is M2M technology and how does is affect you? Here are some examples of what Sprint is doing with the M2M technology:

In Sensors & Alarms, cameras are installed and when cameras are used, property crime is reduced by two-thirds. Cernium and Sprint have used M2M to take video surveillance by transforming ordinary security cameras into a proactive solution. CheckVideo|Sprint 3G “watches” every camera 24/7 for events and protects outdoor and remote areas that are too cost-prohibitive to monitor with conventional video surveillance systems.

Today, MediaTile announced its HumanKiosk digital signage solution powered by the Sprint 4G Network. The HumanKiosk engages consumers in dynamic new ways. At the touch of an on-screen button, consumers can instantly enter into a two-way, high-definition, face-to-face conversation with a remote product expert, accessed over the Sprint 4G network. These experts are available on demand, and through cloud technology are matched based on the consumer’s specific area of interest, which might include product, features and even language.

In the Connected Transportation segment include cost savings, increased productivity, and greater driver safety for businesses; infotainment, convenience and safety for consumers; and green benefits for everyone. The Aberdeen Group estimates that next-generation connectivity in vehicles can produce fuel cost savings of more than 13 percent and operating cost improvement of more than 10 percent.

“By connecting an array of electronic devices, M2M is opening new opportunities to improve business and personal life, often in dramatic and transforming ways,” said Wayne Ward, vice-president-Emerging Solutions Group. “This includes anticipated positive impacts on environmental sustainability, safety on the road and in the workplace, more effective and less costly health care, increased security for communities and companies, and more efficient energy use. Sprint has identified M2M segments with high potential to expand these social and economic benefits, and these are where we expect to see the fastest M2M growth.”

“Not only is M2M growth exploding, it’s exploding in many directions simultaneously,” said Ward. “Whether you’re a solutions developer or a business exploring high-potential M2M ideas, you need a clear idea of where the hottest M2M growth is happening and how to engage ecosystem resources focused on those areas. Sprint has drawn on 12 years of experience with our open approach to device connectivity and categorized M2M growth into a focused, strategic framework for our customers and partners.”

Dan Hesse, Sprint CEO

•          "Our admission into World Wildlife Fund’s Climate Savers program illustrates Sprint’s commitment to making a difference by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Joining the Climate Savers program is an important part of our ongoing climate protection efforts. My hope is that our commitment encourages other companies to follow."

Sprint is committed to being a corporate leader in environmental responsibility.  We want to share a new announcement with you about another way we are working to achieve aggressive goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Dan Hesse, Sprint chief executive officer, said during his keynote address at CTIA today that our company is joining the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Climate Savers program. Sprint is the first Climate Savers partner in the United States that will address all scopes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (direct, supplier, consumer use, and partner emissions ie. M2M) through an agreement with WWF.

WWF is the world’s largest conservation organization and has effectively mobilized more than two dozen companies to take aggressive measures to scale up climate protection efforts as part of its Climate Savers program.

World Wildlife Fund “Engaging Business”

As one of only 28 companies in the program, Sprint joins IBM, The Coca-Cola Company and Johnson & Johnson. Sprint’s collaboration with WWF bolsters its already aggressive goals to reduce the company’s climate impact.

Jason Clay, senior vice president of Markets at World Wildlife Fund

“We are excited to have Sprint join Climate Savers and we look forward to a fruitful partnership. Sprint’s commitment to reducing emissions beyond their own operations will not only help protect our fragile climate, but also help conserve nature’s resources we all depend on for life. This is why we partner with influential, forward-looking companies like Sprint. It’s a powerful way to protect the places and species at the core of our mission.”

Sprint’s commitments include:

•          Reducing Sprint’s own greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent.

•          Partnering with device manufacturers and suppliers to measure, report and reduce their emissions.

•          Identifying opportunities to reduce emissions associated with customers charging their mobile devices.

•          Identifying opportunities for Sprint to help other companies reduce their emissions, particularly through our machine-to-machine partnerships.

Wind, solar, hydrogen fuel cells and geothermal power

Sprint also has a considerable renewable energy strategy, which includes wind, solar, hydrogen fuel cells and geothermal power. Wind power provided more than 93 percent of the electrical energy needed for Sprint’s Overland Park, Kan., headquarters campus in 2010. This wind power purchase provided a reduction of 78,173 metric tons of C02 equivalents in 2010, and according to the EPA GHG equivalencies calculator, is the equivalent of:

•          Taking 15,328 passenger cars off the road for one year.

•          Consuming 181,798 fewer barrels of oil a year.

•          The electricity used in 9,747 households each year.

•          Preserving 774 acres of forest from deforestation.

  • “Our progress on deploying Network Vision enables Sprint to extend our 4G leadership and improve the experience for 3G customers.  Our next-generation network and cutting-edge device line-up combined with the industry’s best pricing plans give Sprint customers the best experience in wireless.”

About a year ago, Sprint told you about Network Vision, our plan to consolidate multiple network technologies into one seamless network with the goal of increasing efficiency and enhancing network coverage, call quality and data speeds for customers across the United States.

Today we are telling you about our progress. It’s going well. As a result of the success and the progress made so far,  Sprint now is targeting completion of Network Vision deployment by the end of 2013—two years sooner than originally scheduled.

Sprint also announced a rapid national roll-out of LTE. Sprint plans to launch 4G LTE on its 1900 MHz spectrum by midyear 2012 and complete the network build-out by the end of 2013.   By the end of 2013, Sprint’s 4G coverage footprint is expected to cover more than 250 million people.

Dan Hesse, chief executive officer of Sprint, and other Sprint executives presented this information on Oct. 7 during a 4G Strategy/Network Vision Update event in New York.

What does this mean for Sprint customers? Many things. But here are a couple key points:

•          3G Network Improvement:  Sprint expects an improvement in customers’ 3G network experience, including expanded coverage, improved network reliability, better voice quality, and faster 3G data speeds. Based on forecasts of data demand, Sprint is confident its 3G network will meet customers’ growing data demands.

•          LTE deployment expected to reach 250 million people by 2013: Sprint expects to launch CDMA-LTE devices by mid-2012, with approximately 15 devices coming throughout the year—including handsets, tablets and data cards.  Additionally, CDMA-WiMAX devices, such as the award-winning HTC EVO 4G, Samsung Epic 4G and Nexus S 4G, will continue to be sold throughout 2012.

Introduction to Sprint Network Vision

Joe Euteneuer, Chief Financial Officer of Sprint

  • “Network Vision creates a platform for growth and competitive advantage and delivers significant upside potential.  Over the long-term, continued execution on Network Vision as well as other improvements to our core operations are expected to result in overall margin expansion, improved return on invested capital and ultimately, increased value for our shareholders.”

The 4G Strategy/Network Vision update also addressed several other topics, including Sprint’s introduction of a spectrum hosting business and significant economic benefits that Network Vision brings to Sprint.
