Coming Soon to More Devices

Sprint plans to launch additional Mobile Broadband devices that can take advantage of these new 3G/4G Day, Week and Month passes later this year.

Beginning this week, Sprint Nexus S™ 4G1 from Google™ users can get first access to the latest version of Swype, as well as a custom build of the popular touch screen keyboard for free.

Swype provides a faster and easier way to enter text on any screen when used with the device’s virtual keyboard. One continuous finger or stylus motion across the screen keyboard is all it takes to enter words using Swype. The patented technology enables users to enter words faster and easier than other data input methods, at up to 40 words per minute.

Swype is faster than other text entry methods, because it has built-in intelligence that doesn’t require users to hit each letter accurately. Also, tracing a smooth, continuous path is much faster than the hunt-and-peck method. It is simple to learn and Swype allows for a high degree of error tolerance providing a more intuitive way to input text on touch screens.

To get Swype, Nexus S 4G customers should follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to http://sprint.swype.com in your browser.
  2. Click Download.
  3. Click Register and fill out the registration information making sure to use the email address for your phone and create a password for your Swype account.
  4. When you receive the email from Swype on your phone, follow the link, remembering the account code in the email.
  5. Follow the download instructions. You will need to change your settings to allow applications to be downloaded from Unknown sources. When this setting is changed, long press the Home key and select Package installer, Install and Open.
  6. Log into Swype using your registration email and password, enter the account code from the email you received from Swype and Download Swype.
  7. Once the application is installed, enable Swype and go to any text field. Then long press the text field, select Input method and choose Swype.

There is also a YouTube video that shows you how to download Swype using these steps. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRXQwtmcPm0.

Voice mail and concerns about voice mail “hacking” have been receiving a lot of attention in the news recently and you might have some questions.

Please know that Sprint places a high priority on protecting the personal information of our customers.

A passcode offers the best protection when it comes to protecting your voice mail account from unauthorized access. Check out the information below for simple step-by-step instructions for making sure you manage your voice mail with a passcode or other safeguards.

At Sprint, when you set up your voice mail account, you are required to establish a passcode. We strongly encourage you to continue using that passcode.

If you choose to skip the passcode, your voice mail account will be vulnerable to unauthorized access.

This decision, however, is up to the customer to make. Sprint proactively offers guidance and information, but the customer must balance the desire for convenience with other concerns.

Simple to set up, use passcode

If you previously chose to skip your passcode when retrieving voice mail, you can re-enable your passcode with just a few taps on your phone’s touchscreen.

Follow these simple, step-by-step instructions.

A tip for Android phones with Visual Voicemail

Some phones with the Android operating system present messages via a Visual Voicemail system.   Visual Voicemail customers also are required to set up a network password if they wish to retrieve messages remotely, which can protect the voice mail account from unauthorized access by someone who does not have access to your phone. We also recommend that customers use the screen lock on an Android™ phone, which would protect the voice mail account from unauthorized access by someone who gained possession of the phone. Just use the following step-by-step instructions:

CTIA – The Wireless Association offers information about pretexting and spoofing, two methods that reportedly can be used for voice mail hacking.

“Even though pretexting and spoofing are illegal in the U.S.,” CTIA states, consumers should take some simple precautionary measures, including:

  • Keep your wireless device with you at all times. Use the lock feature, so that if someone takes your phone, s/he cannot use it to access your voice mail.
  • Don’t give your device to a person you don’t know. If you lose your device, contact your carrier immediately so they can turn off service and prevent others from accessing your voice mails (or other personal information).
  • Create a voice mail password and change it periodically, using passwords that are hard to guess.

Nexus S™ 4G is getting a software update designed to improve 4G data speeds for users and provide several other updates. The release will begin rolling out to Nexus S 4G handsets on Monday, July 25. All users should receive the update in the next three weeks.

In Sprint's preproduction testing, Nexus S 4G showed excellent performance. After receiving feedback from a small number of our customers, we conducted a secondary analysis of its performance with our partners at Google and Samsung and were able to identify some ways we could boost performance on Nexus S 4G.

These enhancements should increase 4G data speeds and signal strength for users. The software update also improves Wi-Fi connectivity, speakerphone audio quality and adds TTY support for the deaf and hard of hearing.

"Nexus S 4G continues to be a highly sought after smartphone and performs very well for our customers. We are excited to make additional enhancements that will provide an even better user experience" said Fared Adib, vice president – Product Development, Sprint. "We're committed to listening to our customers' feedback and working with our partners to provide the best possible customer experience."

Manufactured by Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), a leading global mobile phone provider and the No. 1 mobile phone provider in the United States, Nexus S 4G is the only Nexus S phone with 4G and provides a pure Google experience with Android™ 2.3, Gingerbread, the fastest version of Android available for smartphones.

Additional key features include:

  • 1GHz Samsung application processor that produces rich 3D-like graphics, faster upload and download times and supports HD-like multimedia content
  • Dedicated Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to make playing mobile games, browsing the Web and watching videos a fast, fluid and smooth experience
  • AMOLED™ touchscreen technology on a 4-inch Contour Display
  • 5 megapixel rear-facing camera and camcorder and front-facing VGA camera.
  • Gyroscope sensor to provide a smooth gaming experience when the user tilts the device up or down or pans the phone to the left or right
  • 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot capability, supporting up to six Wi-Fi enabled devices simultaneously
  • Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which allows the device to read information from everyday objects, like stickers and posters embedded with NFC chips

“The time to act is now. Incorporating sustainability into every part of your business isn’t just a “nice thing to do. It’s a business imperative. That’s all the more apparent when you consider that technology companies like Sprint are in a unique position to drive innovation that can help solve many of the world's most difficult sustainability challenges.”

E-waste is the largest growing waste stream in the country. Americans generate 2.5 million tons of e-waste a year…more than enough to fill a line of dump trucks from our nation’s capital to Disney World. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates 140 million cell phones -- 65,000 tons -- are discarded in the U.S. each year. Some are shoved into drawers and closets, others end up in landfills. Today, only about 10% of those are collected for reuse or recycling.

On Wednesday, July 20 at the site of Round2, a certified recycler, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse joined EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, CEQ Chair Nancy Sutley, GSA Administrator Martha Johnson and Dell CEO Michael Dell to sign a National Strategy for Electronics Stewardship. Those supporting the strategy commit to strict recycling practices and will encourage consumers and businesses to handle their own e-waste more responsibly.

Sprint’s commitment with the EPA is just an extension of what Sprint has already been doing as part of its own Electronics Stewardship Policy.  Sprint has set aggressive e-waste goals, among them to collect nine phones for reuse or recycling for every 10 sold by 2017.  To date, Sprint has collected more than 25 million mobile phones - keeping them out of landfills, helping to conserve resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and preventing air and water pollution.

Through the release of the EPA report, the federal government says it will:

•          enhance the development of more efficient and sustainable electronic products;

•          direct federal agencies to buy, use, reuse and recycle their electronics responsibly;

•          support recycling options and systems for American consumers; and,

•          strengthen the US’ role in the international electronics stewardship arena.

Sprint has been a wireless leader in environmental sustainability for years. This year Newsweek magazine ranked Sprint No. 6 on their list of America's 500 Greenest Companies, up from No. 15 in 2010.
