I found this interesting : http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/09/05/htc-touch-pro2-diamond2-and-snap-will-be-eligible-for-windows-mobile-65-upgrade/. Judging from past upgrades for the TP2 in the euro market HTC has provided upgrades for free if only for a limited time.. Im sure they could extend the same curtesy in the N. American market.
This is just a guess as I don't work for Sprint in a top exec position but I would guess the Touch Pro2 is the only phone already on Sprint that will get the 6.5 upgrade. You can get the 6.5 unnofficial upgrades on ppcgeeks and xdadeveloper for most other WM SPrint phones. These aren't from Sprint or HTC so they don't have the Sprint junk on them and they've been tweaked day after day so they usually work better than the Sprint firmware updates anyways.
I've been running WM 6.5 on my HTC Touch (the model before the Diamond) for months now and it works well.
Yeah, HTC will write updates all day long for their phones. But, when it's a network phone, Sprint, Verizon, etc.. they require the request to come from the Network. Otherwise they won't touch it.
I posted a message about a year ago on this exact subject including the email from HTC. Can't recall if there was a single reply.
I don't know about GET the 6.5, but it should be able to support it. If you look at the specs, the TP2 doesn't have any major hardware improvements over that of the TP. Sure, larger screen, and different cosmetics, but same chipset, same memory, etc.. Now I don't know that the Sprint TP2 will GET 6.5 but it can support it and if it can, so can the TP.
Yeah, I've tried some of the unofficial versions as well on my TP. Couple bugs here and there but overall, it works fine. I eventually went back to the Sprint ROM mainly because it was more polished. Slower mind you, but polished.
smotrs, if you haven't already tried firmware 6.5 build 23016 you might want to give an unnofficial build another try. you can slap it into the latest buildos kitchen and get a much newer voice command and other items for your phone. All the 6.5 releases are beta to some degree but 6.5 23016 really doesn't have any issues and you might find it much more polished than the current sprint rom. The latest version I've seen is 23409 but that is not very polished as it is beta for some new gui features. I support a lot of phones and everyone I've upgraded because of performance issues and hangs has loved build 23016 and these are people who complain about their phones (a lot). The battery life on the diamond and the touch pro still sucks but everything else seems improved with the new firmware.

Boe, thanks for the update. I'll give it another shot as soon as I can. I really like the progress they have been making and it's pretty plain that we won't see anything official for our phones from Sprint. Hopefully the TP2 users don't get the same treatment with updates as we, err TP users did, as I know they had a 6.1 ROM update for the Touch a while back.
I do not know although I do know it has been covered several times in both ppcgeeks and xdadevelopers. If your goal is just make a backup of your phone (not the firmware but the software settings, text messages, etc), there are a couple of programs specifically designed for that as well covered in those two web sites. Sorry I can't be of more help.
