i just read another post where it states it will only work on the 4g network for the first month for free. it will not be available in the 3g market yet. i called sprint and they haven't heard about this. it will be a crying shame for me to get this phone and can't use this feature.
You should of post the link to the article the forum was referring to; http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/28/evo-4g-on-sale-at-8am-on-june-4th-with-one-month-free-4g-mobile/
It states; """according to the official EVO 4G Launch Guide we're staring at, the mobile hotspot functionality that turns your EVO into a WiMax hotspot for up to 8 devices will initially work without paying the $29.99 monthly fee if you're happy with using it on 4G only (no 3G). Sprint expects to correct this sometime in July after which the Sprint Mobile Hotspot add-on will require activation."""
They way I understand it is, The "Hotspot" will work without the SOC code applied "IN 4G AREAS ONLY" but with the SOC code applied it will work in BOTH 3G AND 4G AREAS.

just hung up with them and yes you are right it will work on both it's just the people in 3g will and to pay the 29.99. the 4g people can pay it to make sure it works in 3g areas. or they can not pay and just use it in 4g for free (unsecured 3rd party). but they say it will be fixed by release. as for the other question if you are in a 4g area you can answer calls and stay connected. if you r in 3g calls will go to voicemail and texts will come through when you disconnect. hope that help. it's funny how i called sprint earlier and they couldn't answer that question but you call back and talk to someone else and you can get an answer. can't wait to get mine
