Samsung Epic 4G Touch Software Update - EK02
- 4G Sprint Hotspot disconnects when in a phone call
- Radio loses signal and may require power cycle
- Software version is: S:D710.0.5S.EK02
- Released in stages with 100% of devices having received the update within approximately 10 days
- Refer to the Samsung Epic 4G Touch Software Updates for install instructions
12/15 update - for those devices where the update has started but did not complete successfully, there will be a fix
available soon. The target is next week, but nothing 'official yet'. I don't have information on whether
it will be a new OTA push or available only via the Service Centers, but will post an update as soon
as I learn more.

It isn't an update from the "firmware" section. It's an update from the "Update Android" section....which you can't ping the servers at Sprint like you can with HTC phones.
actually you can check for updates. menu settings about phone system updates firmware updates
HTC phones is the same concept, it won't download it unless your carrier/HTC/google has made it available to your handset.
On my G1 and Nexus one it was the same thing, Google sent an OTA and I had to wait until I either got it or was able to download it.
Maybe you were lucky with your HTC device and got updates fairly quickly?
Updates are not pushed out by Sprint servers. Android updates (with the exception of HTC devices since they have their own server system for it) are rolled out by Google's GOTA servers.
Checking for updates does not speed the process along at all. All it does is check the phone's internal memory whether it has received the update notification from the GOTA servers yet. This is why it responds instantly, it does not have to connect to anything since it is not checking in anywhere. There is no official way to speed this process along. Phones are picked at random by Google to receive the update push. Full rollout is completed 10 days after the release (today).
