So is it official that none of the older HTC's, Palm Pro Treo or Intrepid are able to be added to a plan without data now?

My contract is up and I am think I am taking a walk from Sprint, if this is true.  Like everyone else, I don't have a need to have heavy data usage on a tiny screened phone, when I can just do that at home on my laptop.  I just want to access Wifi ONLY.  I have a talk/text plan only with Sprint.

If this new development is true, would someone let me know?  I had thought I would buy an older phone on Ebay and do a swap at sprint.com.  Is this possible anymore?

    Hi ClaudiPo,

I have an HTC Touch Pro 2 now, and its really slow. Its time for my yearly upgrade and I was wondering which phones I can use without having to change my plan. I heard any windows phone is possible when I first switched to HTC Touch Pro 2. I have a really really old family plan - Free and Clear (yes I'm one of the original customers). Thanks for all your help!

I'm in medical school so its really important for me to get a phone that is fast and gets email and internet quickly. The HTC Touch Pro 2 keeps freezing even with text messaging. Its somewhat ridiculous. If I'm ever in an emergency I think I'd get shot before I'm able to dial 911.

To ALL.... Sprint is done.. I been a costumer for over 5 years and Im cancelling my lines one by one and going to metro pcs. $50 unlimited everything.... All non smart phones by sprint are ****. And now to add up to the problem they just dont demand data plan for smartphones they also charge a $10 fee extra per phone per month.. I currently have 5 phones on my line and its been like that for years.. Im not willing to pay more than double my current monthly bill just to have phone that works... I have a palm 800, samsun reclaim, sanyo innduento, LG lotus.. and they all worthless, I just cancelled one of my lines and got and HTC from metro for $100 and plan is month to month for $50 even.. NO TWO YEAR CONTRACT..... I used to be a AT&T costumer and moved to sprint just because you could add data to one phone for $15 a month. Now you cant so Im gonne...

Sprint "Customer Service" and I use the term loosely... is still playing hardball and wants me to buy the data plan that I do not want or need.  I went to Verizon this weekend shopping... they said they DO NOT require a data plan and I can purchase a smart phone as I desire (to use Wi Fi).

To recap:  I am a "customer" of 16+ years.  I pay for five lines.  I do not want or need 'data'.  I just want to use my phone for calls and internet Wi Fi when I am away from office and eating lunch at Mc Donalds.  Wi Fi is free there, by the way.

Where Sprint is being short sighted, is that I may someday... drop my Comcast Internet service and switch entirely to their broadband access.  In the mean time, you would think they would want to keep me as a customer.

Do you hear me Sprint?  I want to remain as your customer.  Why won't you work with me?

PS  Please tell your non english speaking, or non litterate chat employees to stop and read what I say, then think, before hitting their canned reply buttons.  All you are doing is ticking me off.

Wow, a 16+ years customer with 5 lines... gets ticked off by chat employees....

Corporate Sprint has gone GREEDY!. Sprint is not innovative in the right direction. Sprint sure want to show a stout balance sheet before Verizon would offer a price.

I am thinking Sprint is not the carrier for an average cellphone customer anymore. It needs more and more data tethering customers to realize that average loyal customers are being left behind/kicked out because of some stupid corporate financial specialist who sets the plans with out common sense!.

Hope some right employee from Sprint hears your/our concern before its too late.

may be this would open Sprint's eyes:

    "

(Reuters) - Sprint Nextel (S.N) posted a bigger second-quarter loss as the No. 3 U.S. mobile provider had more subscriber defections than expected.

    NEW YORK |          Thu Jul 28, 2011 7:28am EDT

Sprint lost about 101,000  subscribers in the quarter, compared with the average expectation for  15,000 contract customer losses from seven analysts contacted by  Reuters.

The company said its loss  widened to $847 million, or 28 cents per share, from $760 million, or 25  cents a share, a year earlier.

Net operating revenue rose to $8.31 billion from $8.03 billion.

Revenue grew even with customer loss ???

It is not weird to see a company with growing revenue while decling contracts.

They have many other ways of handling their so called "revenues". For example, change the depreication methods of their facilities, charge more to their current customers, pay less to the employees...

    Wake up!!! Srpint~~

dude.. bottom line is that sprint does not care about their costumers.. For example look at the costumers service they have now.. its horrible.. I dont know what country Im calling anymore.. at least with att I was sure i was calling India.. I called after work to diconnect my service and the rep asked me to hold while she transfered me to the disconnection dept. and I was on hold for over 15 mins, and for some reason she kept asking me "how you doing today, sir?" she asked me the same question over 10 time in a 30min period... finally after waiting for 45mins she tells me that the disconnection department was closed and that I should call the tomorrow morning.. I realized later that night that the whole time I was on hold she was trying to reach them and for some reason she though the system was rebooting. Thats what she said.. and It wasnt... At the time I called the disconnection dept was already closed.. She made me wait for over an hour.. How incompetent can this rep be.. It was the worst.. I would not call agian.. Im getting my wife to handle sprint from now on..... NOT HAPPY...

You can't activate a smartphone on Verizon without a data plan peroid. Forced data plan was implemented  at the begining of 2009.

I agree, it is BS to require a  data plan if I have a Smart Phone.  Sprint does not understand that some  customers just want to use the WI FI feature in the phone when they are  sitting at Mc Donalds or at Home where it is free.

A data phone  that is not being used on your system does not cost you (Sprint)  anything.  So do not use that excuse that data is expensive.  Which, by  the way, data is cheaper to service that analog messages.

I  checked, and T Mobile will allow you to have a smart phone and no data  plan.  The downside is they require you to purchase a phone, or bring  your own, to their service.  T Mobile also has a $ 49 (x2 lines)  promotion going on right now that I am considering.  Who cares if they  cap it at 2 gig a month, I dont use that much.

This is where  Sprint is being short sighted and not customer enlightened.  I have 5  phone lines that will march with me as soon as my last two lines  contract expires.

    Sprint... are you listening?

Yes, this is true. That's the beauty of a GSM carrier. My wife is currently using an unlocked T-mobile android smartphone on ATT with no data plan. They don't care when you switch your phone. I am absolutely baffled that Sprint requires a data plan with a non-contact smartphone. I had no beef with Sprint until this. Absolutely obsurd, I'm upset.

Sprint Definitely does not care about the customers as long as you pay your bill. I Joined sprint because of the unlimited data plan and they 1 year upgrade option. When it came time to get an upgrade after 1 year, sprint conveniently removed that option and so I was stuck with the phone for another year. On top of that, If I were to buy a new phone flat out, Sprint would add an additional $10/month for the same phone plan that I already had. The only good thing I have to say about Sprint is that their early termination penalty decreases by $10 after every month. I only had to pay $80 to cancel and that was the best $80 I've spent in a while. I couldn't be happier to no longer be a sprint customer.

WOW- sounds like the conversation I just had with SPRINT CHAT.  There service has gone downhill and the phones and options are way over priced. Time for me an almost 15 yr customer to shop as well. SPRINT needs to get on the ball or they will be loosing customers left and right.

With at&t you do need a data plan and here is the link to see what I say is true http://forums.att.com/t5/Wireless-General-Care-and/Smart-phone-data/m-p/3032573#M185691
