Locked out of my HTC Evo Shift

I have an HTC Evo Shift and I use a "pattern" to lock my phone when not in use. Last night, my son somehow changed the pattern on my phone and now I'm locked out.  It's telling me that I can unlock the phone by logging into my Google account, but when I put in my log-in information, it says "invalid password".  I know it's the right password because I can log in to my Google account on my computer, but it's not taking the password on my phone.

I've been locked out since last night and I don't know what to do! I don't want to have to use the "hard reset" because that would totally wipe my phone clean and I'll lose all my information.

Does anyone have any suggestions???  I'm desperate.....please help!

At this point the only choice would be the hard reset  Any information on the data card stays  Information backed up t google like contacts and calendar come back.  Text messages and customization are lost  Applications have to be reinstalled.

Reset steps for the device are

    • Evo Shift
      • Remove/Replace the battery.
      • Hold the Power, and Volume Down buttons at the same time.
      • Use the Volume Keysto go down to and highlight Factory Reset. Press the Powerbutton to select it.
