I'll be hiking in Europe for two months, so nobody will be able to reach me. They could leave messages but I'll hardly ever be checking by long distance on borrowed phones off in the forests.
Is there a way I can suspend service while I'm away, and yet still have callers hear a message explaining when they can reach me again?

You can switch the plan over to the Seasonal Standby plan, it is $9/month. The standby plan can only be used for 6 months at a time. Also, while on the standby plan your contract is put on hold.
When changing your plan back you will not be able to get your old plan back if it is an expired plan no longer being offered. You will have to choose from Sprint's currently offered plans and add-ons.
I don't think the standby plan allows for any kind of vacation messaging though. It may keep your old voicemail message which has vacation options, but I'm not sure.
