Incorrect Network-Based-Location when connected to the Airave - RESOLVED

Problem:

Location is incorrect when connected to the Airave

Description:

Phone:  Sprint Nexus S 4G, HTC Hero, Samsung Replenish

When at home with network location turned on, my location is reported as Galena Illinois.  I am actually located in Cedar Rapids, IA.  If I turn the Airave off, my location is then reported correctly as Cedar Rapids, IA.  When I turn the Airave back on, after a few minutes my location returns erroneusly to Galena Illinois.

Contributing factors:

None of the Sprint customer support reprentatives that I have talked to have any idea how Airave works, why it has GPS, nor how the Network Location is assigned.  This is even true at the self-proclaimed Sprint Airave Specialist line.  866-556-7310

Experience:

When I called in, the first tech said that the Airave talks to a GPS satellite and is reporting the location to my phone.  He claimed that the Airave was providing the location of the SATELLITE to my phone, so there was nothing he could do.  The satellite, according to him, was located in Galena Illinois.  THIS IS COMPLETELY FALSE.  I believe he actually thought this was true, so I don't blame him for thinking that.

The second rep I talked to, a Floor Manager, didn't know why the Airave had a GPS receiver.  I explained that it is used in part to provide E911 location when calling 911 in emergencies.  She said it was not used for that; I pointed her to the Sprint website which claimed the contrary.

"37. Why does the AIRAVE require Global Positioning System (GPS) technology?  Sprint AIRAVE uses GPS for network synchronization and device location information required for 911"

msstevens from forums.xda-developers.com had the following experience. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5978045&postcount=11

The IP for my phone is supplied by Sprint's DHCP servers when it connects via the Airave. It's not supplied by Comcast's DHCP servers at all.

At the moment, both my notebook and my phone are online. Both the wireless router to which my notebook is connected and the Airave go through the same Comcast cable modem. There is no cellular service available near my house except via my Airave.

At the moment, my notebook's public IP is 24.147.35.xxx and my phone's is 174.146.248.xxx. As you can see, they're quite different. If I switch off my cellular radio and connect the phone to my WiFi, it uses the same IP of 24.147.35.xxx as my notebook. The 24.147.35.xxx address gives a geolocation of Monson, MA even though I'm in NH. The 174.146.248.xxx gives a geolocation of Cedar Grove, NJ.

Thus, your answer is wrong on several fronts. The ISP that supplies internet connectivity to the Airave has nothing at all to do with geolocation on a phone connected through that Airave. Further, the location shown on the phone still does not match the actual geolocation that corresponds with the phone's IP address. In the real-life example before me right now, the location on the phone is 21 miles from the geolocation of the phone's IP address.

Finally, the location service on the phone does not depend entirely upon geolocation based on IP address. If I turn off my cellular radio and connect via WiFi, my phone decides that it's in Hancock, NH which is correct even though the phone's IP geolocates to a different state.

That last bit suggests that the location service on the phone is perfectly capable of using GPS if it can't use IP geolocation.

Doing a simple google search returns MANY people which are having this same issue.  Please assign someone to the problem who has a basic knowledge, or the ability to comprehend how the entire system works so that a solution can be found.

This would be completely understandable; if someone (or the system) hadn't transitioned my previous forum question post as 'Assumed Answered'.  I'm sure it is a policy to transition questions automatically if there is no activity for a few days, but it makes it very frustrating when this happens.  Last I heard, one one was 'working on it' and was going to get back to me.

It is also frustrating when we receive misleading and blatantly incorrect information from Airave support.  Perhaps the rep actually thought satellites exist in a particular city instead of orbiting in space and those satellites would be giving me their position instead of my acutal position, but how are they suppose to be Airave specialists if they really believe that?

Got another private message today saying that the rep now has a tool which will allow them to fix the issue.  Will post back when I hear more.

If you have the original Samsung Airave and not the Airvana we will most likely ship you out one of the new units.

Re: Incorrect Network-Based-Location when connected to the Airave - UNRESOLVED

UPDATED *** If you have the new Airave- "Airvana" and an EVO and your GPS is registering wrong you can call in and we can try to factory reset from our end - If this doesnt resolve the issue we need to do a ticket. To get to the Mobile Broadband Department without getting transferred multiple times be sure to enter the number associated with your Airave into the IVR when you call in. If anyone tells you there is a fix coming out next year but that is the wrong - Make sure your get connected with mobile broadband and get a CTMS ticket created.

We need the following to complete the ticket

     Customer's telephone number for the airave;

Who is the customer’s internet service provider?

Complete a  speed test http://voiptest.packet8.net/

Jitter (0-5ms) :

Upload Speed (min 350kbps) :

Download (min 1Mbps) :

Packet lost (0-1%) :

QOS (min 80%) :

What is the customer’s setup? (Modem/Airave/Router, or Modem/Router/Airave):

How many phones have the issue?

Does the problem only occur while on the Airave?

What type of dwelling does the customer have and what is the square footage?

Incorrect Network-Based-Location when connected to the Airave - UNRESOLVED

UPDATED ** We have determined the Aiave GPS location issue to be more widespread than originally thought. For that reason we are initiating a firmware maintenance upgrade to fix the issue. We have been diagnosing where the error is occurring and the engineers should have an update coming out soon. Sooner than later would be great. There are numerous issues that we do have to do CTMS tickets for so I am leaving the above template info posted but we will not be needing it for the GPS issue. A maintenance release doesn't require anything for the user of the Airave as it is handled automatically.

Internally there was a lot of misinformation and I do apologize because I know the customer was caught in between. This update is accurate and I will update it when we have a date for software release.

Thanks for the update, Larry.

I discovered the same issue with the last round of updates with my HTC Evo 4G. Are there any updates or known fixes?

Re: Incorrect Network-Based-Location when connected to the Airave - UNRESOLVED

Sprint has been blow-harding about firmware updates for the Airave for over a year for this issue, the multiple SMS issue and the restircted access issue.

It comes down to the same thing everytime with Sprint:

1) Deny the problem exists for as long as possible

2) Blame the customer for as long as possible

3) Claim fix is on the way for as long as possible

4) Sit back and hope the poeple who complain will just go away
