Why doesn't my Tour go into 3G mode? It's always in EV-mode. Is that normal? I've owned the phone since Sept. and it has never ever gone into 3G mode.
That may be actually be their nomenclature of "3G" since Sprint and CDMA calls their full performance bandwidth EV-D0 (Rev.0) (faster Rev.A)
usual disclaimers of bandwidth can be affected by multiple factors but there are lots of web sites who attempt to rate your throughput and their fairly accurate when audited,, speedtest.net in the USA offers a fairly robust but quick throuhput test from several Network Operations Centers and their site presents a geo map of NOC's and you click / "Start" and about 90 seconds later you'll have your upload and downstream speeds quantified.
Don't be alarmed if there seems to be w wide gap between up / down speed and the upload speed seems slow.
Cellular broadband is weighted for downloads to end users and the bulk of the network is devoted accordingly, if the two were balanced then it would look more like a network of ISP's hosting mobile websites and that's a waste.
3G represents the third generation of mobile technologies. On GSM networks like AT&T and T-mobile that is HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA+. For CDMA Carriers like Sprint and Verizon it is EvDO Rev. 0/Rev. A.
