Ok, so I got the 8XT. I've been a fan on Windows mobile for a long time, starting with the Jornada. And I've been with Sprint for a long time. It took a while for Sprint to come out with the WP8 but I got it first thing Friday morning. Personally, I feel it is a good quality product but still with a few items that could see some improvement. The biggest problem I'm having is that neither voicemail nor visual voicemail push to the live tile. Which makes it impossible to know if you have voice mail. Turn the phone off, someone calls and leaves a VM, turn the phone on, no notification. I made a workaround. I'm using Visual voicemail with an auto forward to my email and then setting my email to push to the live tile. Problem solved but it should work right. Called Sprint, they couldn't fix it. They told me to go to the Sprint store. Went to the Sprint store, duplicated the problem on the display model of the 8XT. Sprint store I should contact Sprint tech support to let them know. Talked to Sprint tech support and they said I should bring it to the store for diagnosis.
On another forum I posted the question and found one other user with the same problem. It seems to be a bug on the phone. If a Sprint tech is reading this I hope someone will look into it.
Solved! Go to Solution.
I'm getting the same issue also. I've tried everything too, having Sprint reset my voicemail from scratch, and going as far as factory defaulting it. I get the quick little new voicemail blue bar flash with the caller id, then it quickly goes away. It appears that the Visual Voicemail will only update the Live Tile after you go into the app and see the downloading message at the top of the screen. We are going to purchase 2 more phones just waiting on the Samsung Ativ S Neo to come out for comparison. This has to be fixed so we can make a more educated decision on which phones to purchase, or to cut our losses with Sprint. Since the Visual Voicemail seems to be a Sprint App, (know this because as part of my troubleshooting, I uninstalled the Visual Voicemail app and when I reinstalled it, it was listed under the Sprint Apps in Marketplace), it worries me that the Samsung may have the same issue. I prefer the Windows phone and don't want to have to downgrade to an Android.
No, don't get an Android! Windows is so much better and besides this one issue this is an excellent product. Charles from Sprint is monitoring this thread and he says they are working on it. I'm sure they are. But if you're willing to use Visual Voicemail you can set it forward the voicemail to your email, put your email as a live tile on the home screen and then that tile will notify you that your email came in and you'll see that it's a voicemail. So even until they fix it you can still be notified on the live tile that you have voicemail by doing this work around. You get visual voicemail for a month free anyway. I bet once the bug gets logged in the system if it takes them a little longer to fix it they'll probably comp our visual voicemail for us until they fix it. It's only a couple of dollars a month anyway. I have to say, for myself, even with this glitch, I'd much rather have a Windows phone than any other operating system.
The problem as stated by sam is exactly my experience except, after the updagte of Visual Voicmal, the toast message no longer will appear and VV will no longer download any messages.
I have a contact at HTC and he has indicated that Sprint did not report this issue to them as of 7/26/13. They feel Sprint is not sending the flag to turn on or off the vociemail icon built into the OS. This would eliminate the need for the third party ish Visual Voicemail and make the phone work or that VV has made a change to the OS to force users to use its notification system(which does not work).
I am quite disgusted with the release of a product with this serious an error prior to it being tested and made ready for the market.
I just want to let everyone know that I have the exact same issue. SPRINT technical support could not fix this issue after spending countless and wasted hours on the phone with them. I am very frustrated and about to give up SPRINT and go with another carrier.
But I do hope they will fix this issue soon because I really do like the HTC 8XT Windows phone. I think it's better than the Android and I really don't want to give it up.
I have reset the phone to factoy settings. The OS toast will notify of a voicemail. However, if you touch the Sprint supplied Visual Voicemail, it "bricks" the OS voicemail notification and you will never get it back again. The only way i found to restore some kind of voicemail notificaton was a factory rest. And then, the windows phone OS cassette tape like icon notification has never appeared in the PHONE tile. Acording to HTC support, they are sill uninformed of the issue by Sprint but, have had calls from customers.
No worries there, just used the "downgrade to an Android" as a sign that I believe the Windows Phone is far superior and I don't follow any part of the iCult. I have a Surface Pro, and a Surface RT, and have pre-ordered and Xbox One to integrate all my devices.
We've been with Sprint since 2001. We had a few flip phones at first, then my first smart phone was the HTC Windows Phone 6.1. Being in a technical field, I was hooked. Used it until the Arrive came out and bought it the day it was released and then just upgraded to the 8XT the day it was released. I bought this one for my mom and was making sure it didn't have any bugs in it before I gave it to her and taught her how to use it. My wife and I are more interested in the Samsung Ativ S Neo, BUT, the HTC 8XT is an awesome phone! The Stereo Speakers, awesome screen and it's fast. I may not move to the Samsung, if it can't present itself better than the HTC, but as for the case for my mom, the lock screen must show we have voicemails. So rumor has it that the Samsung will be out in about 3 weeks. So hopefully we'll know something by then.
Thanks for being a devote Windows Phone user! There are very few of us out there that stuck with Sprint after 2 1/2 years with our Arrive's waiting for an upgrade. Let's just hope they back them better this time around (the sales person that helped me had no clue about the Windows Phone and actually asked me while she was activating it "Why would you buy a Windows Phone")....sigh... 😛
Charles! Do we need to call Sprint and get a support ticket open so that we can help get this process pushed through Sprint, or are you working on that?
Thanks so much everyone!

Thank you very much for your concern and your promptness to help resolving this issue.
I have been Sprint's customer since its inception in the 1990's and I hate having have to switch to another carrier unless I will absolutely have to. The Voicemail notification is an important and basic feature and it's unacceptable to me that Sprint or HTC have not tested this basic feature out and make sure that it's fully functional before releasing this product. Now I have to check my voice mail every hour to make sure I did not miss any important voice messages on this new HTC 8XT phone since I never get the voice mail notification on my phone and the Visual Voice mail never get updated. I had the HTC EVO android phone before I upgraded to this new HTC 8XT windows phone and the voice mail worked great on the HTC EVO.
I do hope that SPRINT will fix this issue with the voice mail soon as my 14-day return period is about to run out.
Once again thank you very much for your help.
Not a problem, I'm right there with you waiting for a resolution. We due value your tenured service with us and look for it to continue. I have the utmost confidence that we will hopefully hear something back soon; just hang in there with we will figure this out. Thank you.

I certainly hope Charles is able to come up with some sort of resolution. I too am at the end of my 14 day return period. Sprint tells me I got the phone on July 18 (not possilbe because the phone was not availble for sale until July 19). So my return period will end one day earlier. The HTC 8xt works very nicely but, no voicemail notification and, after a factory reset and voicemail reset, still no change. Now an update to visual voicemail has appeared. I did update it but, have never opened the app yet. As explained, that "bricks" the OS toast notification of voicemail, brief as it is. Since then, speech seems to be sluggish and sometime fails. I spent a good amout of time on the phone with a sprint service technician and was advised "take it back and get a differnt type of phone". They (there were 2 on the line) could not find any solution.
Charles, my return period is coming up and has been shortend by 1 day...........
