Ok just got my evo 3d and in the heart of Sprint coverage had great 3g and call signal in my location with the Evo 4g, now i don't have 3g coverage and i have seen better signal strength on Cricket Wireless. I don't know if the power was reduced to the antenna or what the problem is but fix it this is seriously messed up.
P.S. 4g coverage is 2 bars on both 4g and 3D
So sheldon, is the replacement the same hardware version? I'm curious, do you know what your signal strength was with your 4G?
I had my phone in to the service center yesterday, just to settle my own curiosity. I learned some interesting things while I was there, but mostly opinions. Anyway, the rep told me that the phone failed, quickly. The "SNR" test, I believe. However, on the printout, it showed everything as passed except "Google Market Registration". ??????
I'm confused. I noticed on the 40min. drive over there, that I had periods of excellent signal strength and dropouts too. On the way home, i dropped a call to my wife as I entered the east side of my home city, I watched/heard the signal degrade to nothing and right after it dropped, I had five bars again. It seems this phone has an issue locking on to a signal and passing from tower to tower. Maybe it's just sprint.
All I know at this point is that this phone has been more frustration than it's worth. I'm still in the dark as to whether or not it's just the service in my area (we're apparently an affiliate market, not sprint corporate) I'm not going to keep changing out phones just to get one that works right either. I guess what's most frustrating is that carriers are trying to outdo eachother so much that they're pushing out new models as fast as they can, before an adequate test period can be done on the hardware/network which leads to all sorts of headaches for the consumers. That's not value in my opinion. I will say this, however, for the two years I had verizon, I had to call tech support ZERO times. Looks like I'll be switching back.
Yes I'm about the same as you with confusion and frustration.
The phone has the exact same hardware, baseband and versions (PRL and everything), hardware is 0002.
One change is this phone had in EVDO (in the settings menu you can get to with ##DATA#) was AUTOMATIC where the last phone had CDMA.
Either way, so far (knock wood) I have not had a dropped call but I'm still pushing indoors about 95-101dBm. (Ive only had a couple of calls so far in doors though)
My evo4g according to the same software that I am using now said indoors (basement) that I was getting about 85-90dBm during my ownership of that.
The thing I noticed with the 3D vs the 4G, the 3D has a tendancy to jump around in signal strength, I will be in the same place on a call (or not) and have 98dBm, for no reason it will jump to 102dBm, it will do this all over the place sporadically.
This is when I get hammered with dropped calls, like the thing has split personality disorder. (also the roaming and Error 78 about not being able to connect to data), so far none of this has occured on the new phone.
According to people who have done side by side tests on the 3D, it is of the same strenth signal wise to the 4G. (or so their tests dictate...)
If this is true, then all I can say is that the software I have used (opensignal and signal status) is either not valid or magically the day I got my 3D and sold my 4G, sprint's service went down. (or for some reason this phone is not capable of getting signal through walls as easily as the 4G, in that case I would have to say the antenna would not be as sensitive)
On the above, I doubt the sprint signal theory, this has happened across 4 different cities in Utah with the 3D, and I am just up the road from the sprint tower in question in my city, I am rated as "best signal" in my area but I only get 86dBm outside with nothing blocking me where my Evo 4G had 67-74dBm?
I have a funny feeling that the issue may be on the software side, either on the device or on the profile itself, while this phone "appears" to be better so far, it still is not in the 4G's league. (my theory here is 2 phones acting the same, and the major thing in common is me and the data profile that gets downloaded to the phone from sprint for myself)
My 3G data cannot compare either, After removing the sprint proxies (so that no-one can blame that) I am getting a max of between 500-600k down and around 200-300k up, I was getting around 900-1200k on the Evo 4G down, with around 600-768k up.
I have resorted to only using wifi in my house now as 3g is pretty useless and more aggrivation than actual use in doors.
I have to wonder seeing this now on 2 phones (althouth I have not have a dropped call "yet") if any evo 3D out there would pass sprints RF tests period, makes me kinda wish that Sprint had the Samsung Galaxy S2 as of right now, but I guess I'll give this a go for a few weeks and then go harass Sprint again.
I've been calling support for the last 3 days on issues with data connectivity issues and errors messages on my 3D. I've gone through all the normal battery pulls, profile updates, PRL updates, and reboots. I can't even download anything as the 3d will produce a data error and lose internet connectivity. The hot spot, data connectivity is horrible compared to when I had my EVO 4G. My speed test result and sprint mobile speed test results are so slow it's ridiculous. Taking my phone into sprint service center Monday. Very frustrating.
Thanks for the info. I was hoping that's what the issue was but when I talked with Sprint support earlier today they said they checked for area issues and they told me there were no outages in my area.
So I went to the Sprint service center and they did tell me that there was tower issues in my area. So why couldn't Sprint phone support tell me there were issues? The Sprint tech said that only supervisors can only see these type of reported outages. The Sprint tech told me the issues should be fixed in the next day or 2 and just keep testing. I will post update everyday for the next 2 days.
Well I dont know about that tower story, 3 dropped calls in the last hour.
1 of them outside in a grocery store parking lot, signal on call dropped to 120dBm and hung up.
Looked at phone, 3-4 seconds later jumped to 85dBm
There is either something software, hardware or profile related here, back to Sprint I go.
Signal strength and data speeds have been pretty consistent for me. On 3G, I've been getting download speeds of 1.2 mbps and on 4G, the download speed has been averaging about 4.5 mbps. I usually have 5 bars, occasionally 6.
they keep telling me there arent any issues with the towers in my area but out where only the cows roam i hit 1.3 mb down...yet in town i cant even hit roaming speeds...it fluctuates like crazy. i went out of town thrusday and came back sunday...i was on roaming the whole time and my browser speeds were great compared to my normal speeds at home.
i usually get 1-2 bars of normal reception at home. so im kinda iffy on getting the 3D if it actually gets less bars than the 4G gets.
