For Sprint/HTC: List of known software defects

For Sprint/HTC: List of known software defects

Dear Sprint admins, PLEASE continue to visit this thread as new issues that are being discovered will be added! Thank you!

Dear Sprint/HTC:

Us Sprint HTC Hero users within the first week of the device's release have discovered some critical software issues/bugs that need to be addressed fast. These software issues take a lot away from the enjoyement of what can be a truly awesome phone. We see potential and have great hopes for the Sprint HTC Hero and it's Sense UI software, but I for one am starting to lose bits of that hope and am in dire need of a software update!

The following are some of the significant issues that have been brought up recently and need to be fixed (in no particular order):

  • Text/dialier related battery issue: Sending an SMS text message via the stock Message app triggers something in the Dialer app that keeps the phone from going to sleep mode from that point forward, dramatically draining the battery.

  • Data connection is lost and can't be regained without rebooting phone: The phone loses data connection, and the Ev. icon on the status bar disappears. You cannot connect to the internet via data network. Data network never regains on its own without having to reboot the phone. Then data network is later lost again, requiring user to reboot and repeat.

  • Headphone/headset issue: The Hero seems to have trouble differentiating between whether it is a headphone or a headset that is plugged into the 3.5 mm jack. This is a reason why many people are experience mono audio output rather than stereo through their headphones.

  • 3.5 mm jack does not work if phone is booted up with headphones plugged in: If you turn the phone on with headphones already plugged into the 3.5 mm jack, the phone does not recognized that they are plugged in and continue to not recognize even after the headphones are taken out and plugged back in.

  • 3.5 mm jack does not work after unplugging headphones in order to answer a phonecall: If you are listening to media with your headphones and someone calls you, if you unlug your headphones in order to answer the call, the phone will not recognize anything plugged into the 3.5 mm jack from that point forward.

  • Notification bar drag-down option not working: Sometimes, just randomly, the notification bar drag-down stops working. You try and try to pull down the notification bar on the top of the screen but it just doesnt pull down, no matter how much or how firmly you try to drag down. It never starts working again until after a reboot.

  • HTC weather app/widget not updating: Several people are reporting that the HTC weather widget/app is not updating even when it is set to auto-update. Thus, people are seeing on their phone the weather of several hours previous to when they are actually looking at the phone.

  • SMS/MMS not working: some are reporting that they are not recieving SMS texts or MMS messages properly.

  • Reported HTC clock widget/app bug: some are reporting that the HTC clock widget/app is telling the wrong time (like an hour behind or something). This seems to be a big issue that use their Hero's as alarm clocks as the alarm fails to go off at the right time.

  • Brightness issues: some are reporting that auto-brightness does a horrible job doing what its supposed to. I personally disabled auto-brightness, but once in a while my phone dims randomly and does not brighten back up unless slept and reawakened (no, this is not due to idleness because it remained dim as I navigated in the phone).

  • Network display bug: phone displays EvDO Rev. 0 instead of Rev. A

  • Various complaints about MMS failure: Many people are claiming that they are receiving (or someone is not recieving their) MMS messages. I personally don't really use MMS so I wouldn't know...

  • Alarm volume randomly changes on its own: This I have actually experienced myself: the Alarm volume (i.e. volume used to control alarm clock volume) changess randomly by itself. I would put it up to max on one point, then later changes to silent, then later to half way - all on its own. This is even while being careful not to kill the Clock app with a task manager or anything that might be related to Clock/sound.

  • Camera takes very blurry pictures unless super-careful: Yes, if you let the camera focus and click the trackball and wait several seconds, the resulting picture will be clear. But most real life situations, that is difficult to do - such as taking pictures of a moving pet or running child - and the slightest movement cause enormous amounts of blurriness in the pictures. Phone must be faster at capturing the picture. (Possible fix in Donut 1.6?)

  • Calendar problem: People are claiming that the Hero Calendar is having trouble keeping track of days/times of events and appointments. The phone alerts the user of an event at the wrong time, and sometimes wrong day, despite showing the correct day in the actual Calendar app itself. Also, when synced with Outlook, the calendar records the wrong time/date for events.
    • From user "los1223" (condensed): I sync my Hero with Outlook 2007 SP2.  When I go into the People app, it shows the birthday or anniversary as a day early.  For example, if someone's birthday is Nov 20, it will show as Nov 19.  When I bring up the full calendar app or large widget it shows on the correct date, but the small calendar widget on my home screen shows it as a day early.  Also, in time zone settings it shows Pacific Time as GMT: -7 when it's actually -8.  This leads me to believe that the problem lies here somewhere.  I also have the most recent version of HTC Sync that was released 10/16/09.

  • Search button does not work in "all apps" page: If you click the search button (physical button with hourglass image) while on the "all apps" page (the page you see when you click the up arrow on bottom-left corner of main home view) hoping to search for a specific app from the list of all apps, you are instead given the voice search option which searches the internet for whatever you type in. It does not let you search for a specific app as you would like.

  • Android Market does NOT notify when updates for apps are available: When apps you have installed have new updates available, the Market does not give you any kind of notification - even though you have selected the option to notify you (Market>My Downloads>Menu>Notifications).

Will from Sprint has given us a response concerning the software issues we have mentioned above:

Will here.

We've logged the listed defects, and we're glad to see you're finding workarounds for some of them (the mono/stereo, for instance).

Some we're not able to duplicate (brightness, loss of data requiring a reboot) but we've sent it into the testing lab for further research.

Some we've identified the error and have fixes in development (Rev0 display when in RevA coverage).

Will you get a new system update today?  No.

Will HTC and Sprint release an update soon?  Yes.  But I can't define 'soon'.  When we have more information, we'll post it.  We are listening and we are working to make this phone the best possible.

I do ask you to relax a bit; flooding the forums with "OMG it's been five whole dayz!!11!!!111!!!one!" makes it harder for everyone to find information, navigate the forum and have the best experience with the phone and our forums.

Thank you for helping out!

Will -- just a service rep.  With a keyboard.

PLEASE continue to post any more problems that you guys discover here on this thread!

And a note to Sprint: we will be listing all the problems here on this thread for you to evaluate and decide of a fix is necessary and possible.

Anyone and everyone I'm at cd28rc@gmail.com

i think i'm going to cancel my order and continue using my iphone until this gets resolved..

Also had to the list of issues the fact that some of us loss our data connections after using the phone to make/recieve calls, then the only way to re-gain the connection is to turn the phone on off, wait a few min and then turn it back on.

all this is very frustrating. I had and a small, featureless brick phone forever becuase i never saw a phone that i truely believed was the best of the best, was worth the money and wouldnt be out-dated a week after i got it.  I thought the G1 was the one but at the time i couldnt break my sprint contract. when i heard Sprint was getting the hero i was trilled. I read ever reeview possible and was really excited to get it.

but now im just dissapointed

I was hoping for similar battery life to my BlackBerry.  I get about 50-60 emails (combined gmail and work) as well as surfing the web, 10-15 text messages, on top of about 20-25 phone calls all day long and I still have charge left over at the end of the day and it runs from 6:00am-9:30pm every day during the week.  I don't even disable Bluetooth or GPS.

With the Hero even without the dialer getting stuck and draining the battery if I check my gmail (about 15-20 messages a day using the Gmail client) surf the web 45 minutes (broken up at various times of the day) and make a few phone calls this thing is almost dead by the time I leave work around 4:00.  No GPS, WiFi or Bluetooth at all.  What good is having a phone if you have to worry about not using it too much?  Don't get me wrong I absolutely love this phone, but I do not even think the dialer fix will add enough battery life so you can actually use the phone without wondering if your battery will make it all day or not.  As much as I want to keep this phone I think I might just go back to just having my work BlackBerry instead of two phones.  I liked the Hero enough to actually buy another line of service, but this is getting old fast.

I registered on this forum just to make this post.

Let me first say that I am a new Sprint customer solely for this phone. I believe the Sprint HTC Hero has the ability to be an amazing phone. It's not often that I lock myself in to a new two-year contract just to get a new phone. But I had to have this phone the moment I read about it. This phone and Sprint's reasonably priced data plans are what drew me to drop my last carrier and switch to Sprint.

That being said, I have grown more and more dissappointed by this phone. I have been affected by the battery issue where the phone never actually goes to sleep, the mono headphones issue, the REV 0 / REV A issue, and the brightness issue. And I hope to God I am receiving all of my txt messages. Not receiving txt messages that others have sent to me phone would be an instant, and I mean instant, deal-breaker for me. 99% of what I do on my phone is sms. Luckily, I _think_ this isn't affecting me. I was glad to see the quick response from Sprint about the REV 0 / REV A issue and quickly tested to my phone to confirm I was indeed receiving REV A speeds even though the status says REV 0. However, one of the main reasons I purchased this phone was also for its multimedia functionality. I _had_ plans to use this as my mp3 player. I purchased a 16gb microsdhc card and loaded up all my songs only to find they all play in mono out of my headphones. This is simply unacceptable! I cannot understand how this got past QA as it seems to be such a widely-spread problem. And then the battery issue, I have to keep a charger with me wherever I go just to make it through the day.

I honestly believe this phone has potential but these issues need to be addressed by an update NOW. Not next year... don't tell me it's planned. I am on a 30-day return policy timeline here. I WILL NOT be locked in to a two-year contract with this phone as-is. Please HTC and Sprint, fix these problems and keep me as a customer. I just cannot justify keeping this phone much longer knowing that it dies within 4 - 5 hours and something so simple as listening to music through headphones wasn't even tested properly.

I suggest anyone with the Sprint Hero experiencing any of these problems to voice your opinion on this forum. Let Sprint know these things need to be fixed by an update now. We need updates Sprint!

I have another headphone issue maybe you want to work into the "main" post.

If you get a phone call will headphones plugged in (in my case, thinking it's a headset, but I dont know if it's limited to that) and unplug them, just like the reboot issue, it never sees the headphones again.

i totally agree that sprint and htc need to do something to make this phone what it was cracked up to be because my battery drains way too fast for my liking but my main problem is sending/revieving texts and my phone wont even delete a couple of my message threads. everytime i try it freezes and says application not responding

If you guys would take time to search the forum you would know that these issues have been identified by others and Sprint has taken ownership on them.

I pointed out 4 our of your 5 issues, Oct 10th and we had a reply from sprint I believe by Sunday night.

Be patient. MR will be out soon.

I am seeing the same battery issues on the 2 phones that I have and it does happen once a txt is received.

I am hoping Sprint comes out with an update soon...they should/will.

Is that so? Wow, thats terrible. It hasnt happened to me quite yet but I know it will as I am a big music listener with the Hero. I hate the idea of having to restart my phone after every phone call I get while listening to music. Added to main topic.

I will add to the list of \ waiting for a fix from HTC.  I came from a Palm Pre and the battery life on the Hero is a lot better for me.  I was having problems with the battery draining after a text but after I installed Handcent from the app store my battery is much better.  Although the Handcent app is leaps and bounds beyond the HTC widget I still feel we should not have to add a additional messaging service just for that reason.  Everyone should have a fully working phone out of the box.

I do understand that problems will be found on any new device. And I do believe that updates will come.  So I'm not going to be giving up my Hero anytime soon.  I have not had the headphone problem that some people have as it has been working fine for me.

I will say that compared to the Palm Pre this phone is much better so maybe that's why Im not complaining as much.

Hopefully we will get the new 1.6 update soon. But I wouldn't count on it for atleast a month or so.  I saw a video for the Samsung Moment to be released on Sprint on Nov. 1 and the Samsung Rep said it would be shipping with 1.5 as well.  So I'm willing to bet the update will be at best Decemeber,  Just my 2 cents though.

This isnt a real biggie but it bother s me .. I think that i should be able to move the text prediction up or down like i can with all other things I cant see what im typing and since i have nails im almost always typing the worng things.

Ive posted this on other threads but ill do it again in case "the right eyes" browse this one.

I downloading Handscent to help correct my above issue and to try and help the battery life issue.  Ive also read to download taskiller to help with the battery life.  I am 100% against the fact that I have to download a 3rd party app to correct issues with my device.  Sprint says we are responsible for what we download.  So why REQUIRE us to download something that is potentially harmful to make my phone work right?  I dont think most people think that their phone can be hacked just tlike thier pc can.  I was REQUIRED to input my google username p/w, my email username/pw, my amazon username/pw.  So there is a potential that one of these 3rd party apps that I have to download if i want a strong battery can steal/share/hack my info.
