Hero Firmware upgrade to 2 or 2.1 - When

I need to know when Sprint will release the firmware upgrade to 2 or 2.1.  I want the new Google Maps with voice navigation, and it will run only on Android firmware versions above 1.5.  I'm planning a vacation in May and the new Google application would be crucial to gps guided touring.  Sprint has no reception in the Yosemite National Parks areas (or just about anywhere in NW Cal outside major cities, or along the pacific coast.  So I may have to buy more harware if the firmware release doesn't come soon.

I love my Android phone, but would like to enjoy all the latest Google apps, especially the new voice navigation Maps and all its neat features that would aid in touring new places.

Re: Hero Firmware upgrade to 2 or 2.1 - When

It will be out in the first half of this year.  End of June at the latest.

We've heard chatter internally that testing is going well.

Other non-Sprint sources are saying February, but I put no creedence to that.

Keep your ears open (and go get a standalone GPS -- I'm a big fan of the Garmin GPS 60cs series for both handheld and motorcycle use)

Having the firmware update will not add coverage areas to Sprint.  If you don't have coverage before, you won't have coverage after.  Google Maps needs a data connection to operate.

True enough, but Google Maps for Android 1.6 and above "claims" to store route data so that the gps can keep working even if the signal is temporarily lost.  So the firmware update is crucial to running sofware that brings significant improvements to the way gps is handled - at least by Google Maps/Earth for Android 1.6 +.

They never said December. They never said February. They never said March.

They said the first half of the year. Now they're saying early second-quarter, which should mean April.

Rant if you want, but don't lie.

Re: Hero Firmware upgrade to 2 or 2.1 - When

ok, dude, chill... as of right now there are only 2 phones on the market with 2.anything, the Moto Droid (still at 2.0 I believe) and the Nexus One at 2.1... NONE of the other android phones have it, and most are still 1.5, with a few 1.6s scattered in there.  As always, the people willing to constantly stay with the newest and shiniest phones (and often paying the most) get it first, then it will trickle down.  This is nothing new, nor is it a Sprint thing (Verizon Tmobile and ATT aren't getting it out any faster than sprint).  I know, waiting is hard, but everyone is in the same boat...  deep breaths, my friend...

There are several other posts all over the place and you can even look on twitter on their pages. So, really I'm lying, huh?

This is an Irish carrier saying that the European GSM Hero will get the update in March...nothing about the US CDMA Hero,  It even stated "Now let’s just hope that Sprint and Verizon and give us an update on when they plan on rolling out their OTA android 2.1 releases for their CDMA  DROID Eris and Hero handsets.             This one is an unattributed rumor (that means it does not say who told them the info), and it is not a statement by HTC or Sprint

Maybe not lying, but at least not reading some of the posts critically and, with others, not being quite honest with your quotes and the actual contents of the corresponding articles.

None of those statements - none of them - were made by Sprint. They're all rumors.

I guess I interpreted your "they" to mean Sprint, not "sources" at CNet or an HTC fan blog.

Sprint said we're getting 2.1 but did not give a date. The first date they gave us was "1H10." They've since updated that to say "2Q10."

Stop listening to rumors and "sources." Stop listening to "that guy at the Sprint store." If you believe every rumor and "insider" you hear, you're obviously going to be disappointed.

Re: Hero Firmware upgrade to 2 or 2.1 - When

The LAST Tweets that I received from both HTC and Sprint did confirm there was an update at that time; but were two different updates.  I found out the real story when I contacted both companies.. The first Tweet was from HTC about the release.  I contacted Sprint that very day and they confirmed a release but the release was for the HTC Sync software not for the actual 2.1 update.  Then I contacted HTC directly and explained that their system kept telling me that my Serial number was invalid.  The Engineer I spoke with explained to me that the "Orange" update was for the European models and not for the US Market.

I since seen this Tweet from Sprint about the Android update and the estimated release of it.  Granted it is rather vague but at least (I HOPE!) will be actually true this time.  If I am reading this correctly it should be here some time in April.

Android update! Upgrades to 2.1 for Hero/Moment now expected early 2Q10. Currently working through options for upgrades w/ HTC and Samsung.

Again we will see what happens.  I too have been waiting patiently since I found out the software on my Hero was Cupcake 1.5.  So that was the week prior to them actually selling them to the general public.  Luckily being a Best Buy reward zone member had it's privilege this time.  I was able to get it early.  So I again am going to wait until it's released.  I'm hoping this will give the phone more options to make it a little faster.  My fingers are crossed.
