Military Standard 810-F The military standard referred to as MIL-STD-810, "The Department of Defense Test Method Standard for Environmental Engineering Considerations and Laboratory Tests" is comprised of about 600 pages, outlining 23 tests with multiple sub-tests that can be used to predict the ability of a device to work in certain environments. MIL-STD-810-F/G is a very flexible standard and is usually for a simple description of Dust, Shock, Blowing Rain, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIL-STD-810 IP Rating (Ingress Protection) Rating for Equipment and Enclosures A more detailed three-digit number established by the International Electrotechnical Commission, is used to provide an IP Rating to a piece of electronic equipment or to an enclosure for electronic equipment. The IP code indicates the level, or amount of the protection. The three digits represent three different forms of environmental influence: The IP rating is made up of the letters “IP” followed by three numbers. The first number relates to the ingress of particles, fingers, wire, dust etc... The second relates to the protection against water, drops, spray, submersible etc... The third number , if used, relates to the protection from mechanical impact, 1 Joule, 2 Joules etc... The larger the value of each digit, the greater the protection from that influence. As an example, a product rated as IP573 would be better protected against environmental factors than another similar product that was only rated as IP432."> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code Still more: Handheld devices that will be used in environments in which ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, combustible dusts or ignitable fibers are likely to exist some or all of the time under normal operating conditions must be rated Intrinsically Safe . This is highest level of protection possible, making it the safest device choice. A Non-Incendive device is designed for use in environments where the specified hazard may be present, but is not likely to exist under normal operating conditions. Device spec example:
