Sprint Product Ambassadors: Is the LG V20 LG's Saving Grace of 2016?

As many of you may have seen in industry news, LG recently posted their Q416 earnings highlighted by a massive $224 million dollar loss stemming from lackluster sales in their mobile and automotive divisions.  Their 2016 Sprint flagship, the LG G5, had "weak sales" and did not resonate with consumers, who found LG's attempt at modular smartphone implementation wonky, compounded by build quality issues in the device chassis as well as frustration around LG's claim of an all-metal unibody design which turned out to be painted plastic.  LG later clarified the primer vs paint debate but by that time, it seemed to be too late and people just moved onto to other Android OEM rival handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S7.

LG:

"Profitability was hampered by weak sales of the G5 smartphone and higher marketing investments. Introductions of the next G Series phone and mass-tier devices in the second quarter following Mobile World Congress are expected to help greatly improve the LG Mobile Communications Company’s market position in 2017."

Despite the bad news, LG may have had a saving grace in their fall phablet the V20 which proved to be popular with customers and has sold briskly for the Korean company including here at Sprint.  The V20 helped drive LG's Q4 mobile division sales up nearly 16% although overall the division was down 23% from the prior year.  The V20 with it's straightforward emphasis on just being a great phone offered users excellent, clean and quality industrial design along with innovative features like the secondary ticker display (which we here on the PA team absolutely love) and the luscious "next level" (seriously) quad-DAC.  With the adoption of the V20 in the market, consumers seem to be saying to LG to keep it simple, give them quality and just make a great smartphone.  It doesn't need to come apart like a Transformer and have other things bolted onto it in a Frankenstein-like manner to make it something it's not.  People just want a great phone, period.

Hopefully with the next G series flagship for 2017 LG will take cues from the success of the V20 as well as lessons learned from the G5 and just make a fantastic device.  We here at the PA team can't wait to see what's next from LG, we are huge fans!

Until next time,
