Why has my mobile broadband service suddenly deteriorated?

After updating the Smartview data profile about 6 days ago, my Sprint Wireless Broadband service has deteriorated significantly. At first I thought this was a one time glitch, but it has been so consistent over the past few days that it seems permanent. The contrast in the level of service accessible through Sprint is shocking:

October 2, 2010

Download Speed: 1257 kbps (157.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2470 kbps (308.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 104 ms

October 10, 2010

Download Speed: 429 kbps (53.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 201 kbps (25.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 120 ms

Download speed is one third what it was a week ago.

Upload speed is 1/12 what it was a week ago.

The only changes made have been the use of the "Smartview" Tolls interface to "check for updates now.." and to "update the data profile".

What is going on here?
