Phone fitness features.jpeg

As we work through 2018, many of us may be looking for things to inspire us and help us to become healthier and fitter – for ourselves and our families. Fortunately, the devices we turn to most, our phones, can give us all the inspiration and information we need to accomplish our goals – long after our enthusiasm for our resolutions has faded.

Let's take a quick look at three common phone fitness features, top workout apps and accessories that can help us get started and stay on track.

  • Pedometer: Some phones, like Apple devices, have built-in pedometers that measure walking/running distance and steps. In Apple devices, this fitness feature can be found in the Health app that comes pre-installed in your phone.
  • Music: Most phones come with access to streaming music, so load your most powerful, inspiring songs into your cloud and on days when a workout is a must but you just don't feel up to it, pop on your favorite playlist and get moving. Within about five minutes you will have forgotten all of the reasons you didn't want to work out in the first place.
  • Other Health Trackers: Some phones come with fitness features that allow you to not only track your steps and walking/running mileage, but they let you record data about how many minutes you exercised in a day, how far you cycled, how many flights of stairs you climbed, how long you spent meditating, how long you slept, and even track your nutrition and body measurements – all without having to download additional apps.

Workout Apps

  • Runtastic Results: Easily one of the top fitness apps, Runtastic Results features strength-training workouts tailored specifically to you. You start by listing your goals, then the app will generate a personalized 12-week workout program. To help ensure that you do every move safely, when you start a workout, there are videos that demonstrate how to perform each exercise.
  • Daily Burn: With more than 800 workouts to choose from, including dance cardio, yoga, and strength training options, it's easy to find just what you need any day of the week. There's also a live workout (the Daily Burn 365) that you can join every day – all year long.
  • 7 Minute Workout: Perfect for anyone who thinks they're too busy to work out, this handy fitness app gives you access to daily workouts that combine strength and cardio training, and even lets you track your progress and find new ways to make your workout more challenging.

  • Headphones: If you're someone who likes to workout with music or wants the voice of the trainer from your favorite fitness app in your ear (literally), or you just want to listen to a podcast on your walk or hike, get a pair of comfortable headphones. This way, you can listen to whatever you want without disturbing those around you.
  • Cases: In order to protect your phone while you do anything, a case is an absolute necessity. However, depending on your go-to style of workouts, you might want to consider a case with a kickstand so you can comfortably use your workout apps, an armband-based case so you can carry your phone with you while you run or bike, or a waterproof case so you can take it to the pool or lake while you swim, use your stand-up paddle board or row.
  • Wearables: If you're not someone who likes to run, bike, or do a workout with your phone on your body or nearby, you can get a lighter weight wearable device that interacts with most phones' fitness features and many of the top fitness apps. From watches to bracelet-style trackers, they can help you get more from your workouts and stay accountable.

Regardless of what type of workouts you love – the point really is to just move and have fun. We hope we've given you some food for thought. Cheers – and here's to a heathy 2018!
