Horrible 3G speeds in Baton Rouge, LA - any fix coming soon?

Ever since Baton Rouge was upgraded to Sprint owned 3G in July their speeds have been horrible!  I wish we were back on the Alltel 3G like we were for a couple of years.

The difference in speeds varies so much, like basically some towers are broke or lacking backhaul and others are not.  Time of day does not make a difference so I it's not a loading issue.  I can be 0.25 miles from one tower and hit 1200/600 on my Epic.  Go down the road by the airport with 6 out 6 bars, -65 dbm signal, if I can get the speedtest to run I will hit arond 20-30/100...even at 3am in the morning! Some tests were hitting 6/60!  6 kilobits...that speed reminds me of the days of dialup...hell we used to get 22-32kilobits on dialup!

Downtown is also another joke for 3G.  C'mon?   50/100?   You can't even get Pandora or Slacker radio to work.   Give up on trying Youtube.  The sad thing is if you force your phone to roam on Verizon's 1X (2G), you'll have faster speeds and less data stalling.

I'm really thinking hard about returning the recently upgraded phones and cancelling the whole thing.  This is ridiculous.

Can any Sprint reps here check into if any tickets are open for the area?  If not I'd like to open some on quite a few areas here.

I've spoken with tech support and they opened a ticket, but it turns out they only opened it for the main downtown tower right off Laurel St.  They said their findings were that there are too many users bogging down the tower and that another T-1 would have to be ordered.  (Early December is what they said).  I let the rep know it is not just isolated to the downtown tower as I experience bad data speeds all throughout the city.  He said he would relay this to the technicians as well.  I would call and report the same findings, as the more calls they get, the more likely they will do something.

I emailed customer support today about this.  The speeds have been back-and-forth for a couple of months now, but the past two days out in the Coursey Blvd. area, I can't even reach 30 kbps download.  Upload speeds are generally decent, but it took my phone over 3 hours to download an update to Fring off the market this morning at a blazing average of about 3.2 kbps.  I do see where they plan a new tower in the next couple of months for BR, and I think alot of their problem is they didn't have the proper connectivity in place when all the local Sprint users were dumped off of Alltel's 3G towers for data onto the native Sprint towers.  I also think they have serious network switch and backhaul problems with their Hammond and NOLA area switches that they tied BR and Lafayette to.  The speeds during the daytime all over BR are too slow to even read webpages with.  In the late evenings and early mornings, they seem to get a little better, but without WiFi, forget about using your smartphone for anything other than calls and texts.  I hope that other BR area customers will keep complaining so Sprint will write those tickets for Ericsson to fix the network (yeah, Sprint outsources the maintenance of their 3G network to Ericsson-- that explains a lot!).

Re: Network Busy problems...

"Network Busy" problems in 70816-- Baton Rouge, LA

O'neal as well as South Sherwood Forest. Re cycled phone with same problems. Wifes AT&T working without issues. Also, was in Hammond, LA and signal was two bars.

Any Status?

That is horrible...  Failed to properly plan?  You would think they could have run some reports to determine the number of phones and types attached to the towers...or at least got some data from Alltel since they were paying for it.  They would have known they needed more backhaul at that one tower...c'mon...it's downtown...don't just throw one T-1 on it and call it done.  Even though this area is probably 80% AT&T or more, I could have planned that tower better.

I will still stick behind my theory of them just throwing in the 3G and not configuring things properly...do it as quickly as possibly and move on and get paid no matter if it is right or not.

I'll just continue to update this thread with speedtests and locations maybe we will get someone to notice and come fix their issue they created back in July. Enjoying Slacker Radio right now listening to it start and stop....it can't even keep up with a lower quality audio stream...  sheeshh..

Yea, the data has been bad, no doubt.  But AT&T is no better here.  It's funny looking at all my co-worker's phones and seeing a big E at the top.  Their data is piss poor as well.  Verizon is the best in this area imo.  I really haven't had many issues with Sprint until this data problem.

I haven't seen any issues with my co-workers AT&T phone...it always says 3G when we are in the building downtown, the speeds are pretty quick too.

Could you please stop browsing on your phone over there?  you are making my Pandora stop and start on my phone.

How do you go about getting a ticket open?  I don't have another phone to talk on in the vicinity of the tower I'd like to call in.   I do know the location of the tower though.  The dead area is very annoying.  I like to listen to streaming music in the car... when I'm a passenger in that area, its annoying that you can't use the browser, or any other data services.  There's no way I would be able the girlfriend to stop and sit for an hour in the car while I open a ticket.

I guess I could try emailing customer support and see if they will open something.

This is the one in question.

Kind of ironic that it is the one that covers the Airport with pretty much dead EVDO service.

Regular customer support won't yield much.

try sending something to either sprintcares@sprint.com or [...]

Are there any Sprint Mods who can help out here as well?

Re: Horrible 3G speeds in Baton Rouge, LA - any fix coming soon?

I have had similar experiences across Baton Rouge after the "so-called" 3G Upgrade- I now drop calls along Sherwood Forest Blvd between Florida Blvd and I-12 and the service @ Southern University has gone to HELL- I used to be able to consistently surf and make calls on my BB from campus and now it is a daily occurence- "Searching for Service/ CDMA" - Roaming in the middle of the city???// 1XEV is constatnly in and out @ Southern University- and on Game Day whereas I used to be able to track sports scores etc... I am now looking for svc barely able to get an sms out... These events are also happening in the Coursey Blvd area as well...

I am a premier customer and have been w/ Sprint for close to 10 years but I am SERIOUSLY considering breaking my contract or reducing both lines to bare minimums and riding them out and getting service w/ VZW or maybe even AT&T (IPHONE- UGHH)!!!

Customer Care Mods if you are listening to your BR. La. Customers please respond either here or via Facebook or something......!!!!!

Re: Horrible 3G speeds in Baton Rouge, LA - any fix coming soon?

I really don't think Sprint cares much about data reliability of their 3G network.   Speeds here in Colorado Springs range from 2 mbps on the north side of  town to .10 mbps on the South side of town.  Ironic that all the  money's is on the North side of town where service works perfectly and  all the getto slums can eat S*&t and die.  Thank god I can force roam 3G off Verizon when I actually need to use data, I guess that's the best perk of this service provider, being able roaming off someone else's network.  Oh, and the speed tests I do are obviously optical illusions seeing as Sprint keeps stating that everything is working fine and data is continually being monitored, well are you going to monitor my .10 mbps down.  Seeing how dang long it takes for this website to load, maybe their preception of 3G fast is dirt azz slow.

Porn loads pretty slow at 1X speeds too btw.
