based on my chat with sprint customer service, the OTA is not happening yet, but rather will start in the next two weeks. Transcript below:

Sprint: You're in our Chat queue in position 6. Please hold for the next available specialist.
Lynne B: Hi Paul,
Lynne B: How are you?
Lynne B: Let's move this chat and make it a window of its own. It will enable you to view other Web pages while we chat.

Simply click the white Yes button below now.
Lynne B: Thanks for moving the chat window.
Lynne B: While I access your account information, can you please provide more details about why you’re chatting with us today?
You: I would like clarification as to whether the OTA update of the Nexus S 4g to android 4.04 is currently ongoing or if it has yet to start
You: I am well btw and thank you for asking. I hope you are well too
Lynne B: I am happy to inform you that Beginning 4/5/12, a software update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is available for the Samsung Nexus S™ 4G (D720).
Lynne B: Download will be pushed from Google in waves starting 4/5 over the next 2 weeks; customers cannot initiate the download on their own.
You: after such a long wait i suppose making it even longer is not such a big deal
You: device selection is at random, is that correct?
Lynne B: I do understand this,
Lynne B: Just a 2 weeks more, and then you can upgrade that
You: wait the ota will occur in 2 weeks or will take 2 weeks to complete?
You: "Download will be pushed from Google in waves starting 4/5 over the next 2 weeks"
Lynne B: It will start from the next 2 weeks,
You: so it will start in the next two weeks, or it started on 4/5 and will progress over the next two weeks?
Lynne B: It started on 4/5 and will progress over the next two weeks
You: roughly how many nexus s 4g devices exist on the sprint network?
Lynne B: I am sorry Paul, It can not be possible to determine this,
Lynne B: Since customers are using phones and keeps on changing day by day, so it is really hard for us to even assume the number of 4G availability.
You: or better stated, is the two week rollout period a generous estimate or is it thought that the two week period will be required in order to update all nexus s 4g devices
Lynne B: You will need to wait till the Update is pushed to the device for you to download the update.
You: yes i understand that I have to wait for the update to be pushed to the device. My question is if it is anticipated that the two week push period will be required to update all nexus s 4g devices
Lynne B: It will take that much time to do some basic settings with the server and some technical reasons as well,
Lynne B: Once it is done, It will be sent to all the customers to update the phones.
You: so are their currently nexus s 4g devices that have received the OTA update as of this moment?
You: "It will take that much time to do some basic settings with the server and some technical reasons as well" <- so in other words, the OTA has not yet begun?
Lynne B: As of now, we have not begun the OTA
Lynne B: It is just at the beginning stage only.
You: that is going to upset a lot of already upset nexus s 4g owners
Lynne B: however, please do not worry, all the updates will be available very soon. I would request you to please wait for just 2 more weeks With in that period we will start Updating the Nexus 4G
You: so basically sprint says the update is available, even tweets the information but the reality is that the OTA is not occurring and nexus s 4g users will have to wait another 2 weeks at minimum to see the update
Lynne B: You may get that in between as well, Since this is the maximum time of starting OTA to update the phone,
You: waiting is what I and every nexus s 4g owner will have to do but you might relay the suggestion to upper management that they hire some public relations consultants...
Lynne B: I do understand the inconvenience,
Lynne B: Please wait for just 2 more weeks, And then you will be able to use the updated phone
You: so much for the pure google experience that the nexus s 4g was sold to me as.
You: thanks for your information, it has been very enlightening and not surprising at all considering Sprints fumbling of the enitre Nexus s 4g ics update process
You: have an excellent day
Lynne B: I appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
Lynne B: It was a pleasure assisting you. Have a great day.

At least she was nice and not entirely dimwitted. But yes.. as we all know- the nexus s 4g "google experience" hasn't been what was advertised....

Definitely look forwards to the day that:

1. the telecom industries fall apart due to their overcharging for bad product and their lack of innovation

2. the day my sprint contract is up so i can cancel

3. the day google figures out how to deal with their stupid fragmentation issues

I agree. At least she was nice. I'm sure it's been a long day for them responding to all of the S 4g users. And, I'm looking forward to your point #2 as well. I still have a 5 month sentence left in my imprisonment...

No, the rep stated it started yesterday and will continue for two weeks (I thought it was 6 weeks). Updates are staggered to even the load on the network.

I agree. The updates are pushed by Google not Sprint. Google said the roll out has started on 4/5 and will continue for 10-20 days.

preadly7,

The OTA has already begun and it will be ongoing for the next 10-21 days. I already read of people receiving it on other forums like XDA. I'm assuming based off the first attempt Google made with ICS for the Nexus S and deciding to pull it based off the feedback they received that they are taking extra caution with this deployment to ensure it's a success.

I got an update notification and updated my phone yesterday.  It was late afternoon, not long after the tweet went out.
