I am getting horrible 4G speeds in downtown Salt Lake City (84111 zip). This has been going on for a while now.
I get full 4G bars, so it's not a signal issue.
Here are some speed tests to show you just how bad they are (on my Evo). These were all done from downtown Salt Lake. I tried a different server on a couple to see if the results were any better. They weren't.
I do get decent speeds in other areas, and even intermittently get good speeds in downtown Salt Lake. But this dial up speed over 4G (most of the time) needs to be fixed.
Can someone at Sprint look at this please?
I don't know the date this all started, but here is the earliest speed test that I saved. You can see the date on it is 10/11/2010, so over a month ago. And it, like all of my speed tests (in this thread), was done with full 4G bars on my Evo, from downtown Salt Lake (84111 zip code).
I have many more speed tests than this. In the interest of keeping this thread simple, I will only post the most recent result (at the time of this posting), along with the oldest result that I have saved. I will also include a result where I tried a different server (Austin, TX- the one the speed test app defaulted to) even though the actual test was done from downtown Salt Lake.
So I just did another one. Again, full 4G bars, from downtown Salt Lake (84111 zip), on my Evo.
By the way, the email responses I have been getting regarding this post (from Sprint) have ranged from frustrating to comical.
For example, multiple reps have told me that I don't yet have 4G service in my area, but since the coverage map shows it is "in building" I should eventually get 4G.
Not sure if I should laugh at these morons for not doing their homework before emailing me (in building means it has the highest level of 4G coverage- it should work indoors, or inside a building) or cancel my account out of frustration with the poor 4G service, and even worse customer service.
Anyway, here's the latest speed test. Hopefully someone at Sprint who knows what they're doing sees this...
So I just ran another speed test. This was also done in downtown Salt Lake (84111 zip code) with full 4G bars on my Evo. As you can see from my posted speed tests, this problem has been going on for over a month.
I am also in Salt Lake and have been experiencing the same issue. I have talked to various Sprint reps and even some Clear reps. Most of the Sprint reps were not very much help, some did not even know they were using Clearwire's towers. However, a Clearwire rep seemed a little more useful. The first thing we talked about is that Clear does not (and cannot) trottle individual phones. They send out a radio, analog signal that cannot be sent to one individual modem (phone). The reason why we talked about this was because there is talk that Clear or Sprint is trottling individual users speeds because they use large amounts of data. This is false. The real reason seems to the unexpectidly high level fo success that these phones have had. There is strain on the system and Clear is having a hard time keeping up. When an area has too much use, Clear does scale the speeds way back so as to at least allow everybody to still be able to connect (although probably not stream movies, etc). I was told that Salt Lake will be getting some new towers soon, so the best thing to do is be patient and wait it out. As a side note I got 6 MB downloadn tonight where I have been getting 20 kb download consistently for the past week or so... so that's a good sign - even though it is back to being slow again.
Well I hope you are right and we get more towers in Salt Lake soon.
Here is my daily speed test. As always this is with full 4G bars on my Evo, from downtown Salt Lake (84111 zip code).
So I just did my daily speed test. As always, this is with full 4G bars on my Evo, from downtown Salt Lake (84111 zip code). Also, I edited the first post in this thread last night, removing some of the speed tests. I figured it would be better to keep it simple.
Also, just in case someone from Sprint reads this...
Someone else posted about this same issue, on multiple phones and accounts, all over the Salt Lake area. You can see that thread here:
I am having the same issues with my data in the DFW area too. Only difference is I have the issue on 3g and on 4g service.
Random speed increases/decreases so often to the point that my data is useless.
Multiple calls to tech support and customer service and no one knows or will admit to anything. Even took my phone into service center and they had the nerve to tell me it was my fault because of the apps I downloaded. I reset right there in front of them back to factory defaults and showed them. They just shrugged their shoulders and said it was the Speedtest.net app that was wrong.
Good customer service, eh?? Now there are hundreds of threads on the boards from all over the country and the sprint admins are not responding at all.
Sprint is showing what a POS company they are. This has been happening to me since end of October. The second Verizon puts a good 4g phone on sale Im dropping Sprint like a bad habit. Hopefully it will be soon enough that I can recoupe my ETF through the sale of my EVO on ebay.
