Account owner passed away, am I responsible for the outstanding bill?

My S.O. passed away and left an outstanding bill. My daughter and I switched to a different carrier but we own our phones from Sprint and would like to use them with the new carrier. I know there's a policy about unlocking phones with a delinquent account, but the contract is voided upon death, correct? I never signed it so will I be held responsible or penalized? I had just upgraded and am planning to return the new phone, I just want our older phones that we paid off to be usable. I cant afford to stay with Sprint.
